Interpol Check In From The Studio
Not everyone admired Our Love, but the album did grow Interpol's fanbase while finally getting them on the Armani payroll. These are two things that men with their wardrobes probably care about more than you realize. In the time since, the dapper and moody NYC post-punkers got busy with various tangential pursuits: Sam on Magnetic Morning, Carlos with filmmaking and his Italian Greyhound. But they are ready for album number four, and want you to know they have no idea what it's about:
It's been a long time. We shouldn't have left you...After the touring for OLTA came to an end, we all dispersed to tend to our individual personal lives.
...And to get our ducks in a row.Now the band has reconvened, and we are rehearsing new songs.
We find ourselves marveling at the tremendous focus
that has defined our early rehearsals for this, our 4th effort.All kidding aside, we feel like a new band.
Once again, we have no concept to this batch of song-writing.
(We are often asked about our intentions when we set out to write music.)
There is rarely any intention to this process.
We just make the music.And without going into too much detail, the songs sound vital.
It's as though we've hit upon a balance between our urgency and
our calm. And true to our better work, this is music that unravels over time.We anticipate that, once it's done, you high-minded folks will welcome the music...
into your bedrooms...to swagger and breathe...It's still early, yet, though. We will keep you posted.
In the meantime, a couple of us have kept ourselves busy with extra-curricular activities. Carlos has made a film called My Friends Told Me About You and Sam has released a record with his band Magnetic Morning.
And we hope that you're all weathering well the turmoil of the age.

Man these guys have just downward spiraled. Their last album tanked, they attempted to sell out madison square garden and failed miserably. Hopefully they can bring it all back. Their first one is still golden in my book

I actually liked the last album a lot. ... but then the show I caught on the preceding tour was kinda underwhelming.

Interpol shows blow me away every time. I've seen them at Irving Plaza and MSG, two extremes, and thoroughly enjoyed both.

Saw them on the Antics tour in L.A. and they were awesome. Saw them at Coachella '07 and it seemed like they were phoning it in a bit. Still tight and precise, but a bit boring.

Turn on the Bright Lights was great, and you know, Antics was good too. The reason i say Antics is good is because at least a third of that album comes from the TotBL sessions. Our Love to Admire was halfway ok, the other half was meandering and boring.
I saw them at the Grand Olympic Auditorium and at Coachella ('03 or '04?) and at the former venue they rocked, at the latter venue they were horrible. An inconsistent band with a lead singer who actually has quite an underwhelming voice during live shows; on the albums it sounds great. Makes me realize that even "indie" bands use studio magic.

On record they put reverb on Paul's vocals and on the guitars though they used less of it for OLTA. Live, they go cold turkey. Its different of course, but live, it doesn't sound right. Its as if they're naked so-to-speak. However, when they played MSG, there was a nutural reverb and I thought they sounded great! Their best show to me.

Can't say I'm especially excited about album #4 but it'd be nice to see them re-disover the atmospherics and more unusual song structures of the first album and maybe try some more variations on their established sound.

I agree with this completely. Pace is the Trick is one of the most amazing songs I've ever heard . Most of the first half of the album is fantastic but then ehhhhhhh.

Carols D did keyboard stuff on OLTA. Most of his keyboard work was, like his composition work, beautiful. However, this shift made Interpol more melodic and "boring." It did take away from the rhythm section but added alot to their sound. I dare you to go back and listen to the cd with good headphones in the dark. You will be blown away. I am sure after the backlash they will be going more raw like their first cd though. I am cool with that, also.

Saw them in New Orleans w/ Blonde Redhead on the Antics tour. Both bands blew me away. And again with Our Love to Admire w/ Liars opening. While I enjoyed Interpol, something just seemed to have been missing. I remember leaving that night and everyone talking was all "Liars! Liars! Liars!" Apparently I wasn't the only one who felt there was some obvious discord there.

I honestly liked "Pace is the Trick," "The Heinrich Maneuver," and "All Fired Up" on OLTA, but everything else was pretty drawn out and blah. I'm sure everyone is hoping the new one is more like TOTBL. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

I'm still baffled that people didn't unanimously love OLTA. That album is wonderful, through and through. Yes, I totally agree that it doesn't sound like TOTBL, but has that really become our measuring stick? How many people gave the Strokes shit when Room On Fire came out, for sounding too much like their debut? People are fickle. MPP sounds nothing like Feels. Not saying OLTA is anything like MPP, but have an open mind, folks.

It seems that they are going in the trend of Trail of Dead with the downward spiral thing. Not everyone can be like the Pixies & Sonic Youth. It's hard to follow up greatness after your first 2 albums for a lot of bands. That's why I was so disappointed with Rilo Kiley after their great Execution of all things. Everything after that sucked..so same thing with Interpol.

They didn't try to sell out Madison Square Garden, their booking agent did and if they didn't manage, it's just because they're not mainstream. They're still one of the most hypnotic bands out there and I look forward to hearing their fourth album. They rule!

i for the most part agree with most of you, our love to admire just didn't feel right. i would compare it more to the yyy's and how syb was delightful in many ways, yet didn't have the same effect as ftt. and the band agreed...if any of that made anyyy sense.
