iPhone?

Don't ask us about patents, but Stevie Jobs got up onstage and proudly crowed that Apple's new iPod + Phone combo is called "iPhone" (Linksys/Cisco be damned, apparently). The tagline, humbly, was "Apple Reinvents The Phone." Classy. It already has a Wiki page! Check the pics, via Engadget.

Cingular only for now, kids. Engadget also quotes Jobs on the specs, including 8GB of memory, camera, thinner than Blackjack/Motorola Q, no stylus and no buttons (touch screen? ewww), portrait/landscape view, video playback, and all the usual smartphone trappings (email, IM, calendar, yadda) -- all running on OS X (a bit much for a handheld, no?), all synched via iTunes. Oh yeah, and it plays music. (During the demo, Steve picked a tune by The Beatles. Sly dog.) Check the demo at Apple. Email looks like it'll be an absolute bitch on that thing! (Wipe the drool off your face.)

Doesn't look that great to me. Of course, I'm not fond of touch screens, mostly because of the icky little fingerprints that get left behind. Yeah, I'm a little OCD...lol.

Interesting that he played a Beatles song... since I'm pretty sure you still can't buy the Beatles' music on iTunes. Anyway, no surprise. Of course, people will have to pay out the ass to get one of these little gems. I'm sure they'll rock, though. And I'm sure they'll be glitchy, at first.

I still prefer Bill, though.

According to macosrumors:
- iPhone is $499 for 4GB of Flash storage, $599 for 8GB. Will ship in June, due to FCC red tape.

- For now, iPhone is only available through Cingular, with a 2 year contract. Sources we talked to at the keynote suggested that iPhone will evolve rapidly in the next year, and should be available on all major carriers by mid-2008....prices will also drop fast.

- Support will be provided by Apple, not Cingular. This will make many people happy.

Damn, and I just got a Katana and a 2-year contract from Sprint. Hopefully the iPhone will kick ass in 2 years and only be $300 or less.

I LOVE the design, but HATE the specs.

320x240 video resolution and Cingular only.

Can a playa get some wifi up in this phone, too?

Oh... and that price ($500 and $600 = Ouch to my wallet)

But, again, that design is so hawt!

I won't be getting a boner til this thing has Wi-Fi (maybe it does) and unlimited downloads for a monthly fee (it doesn't).

I think, as consumers, we should be pushing for "whatever song I want whenever I wanna hear it," instead of paying per track.

The price isn't too bad, actually, considering that you're effectively paying for an iPod, but with a phone and various other things added on. And it's said that the price will be going down, over time.

You know, I'm starting to warm up to Apple.

matthew: who isnt warming up to apple?? :-p

matty ice: the screen is supposed to have this sort of super clear plastic/mat-finish to it that avoids any smudging or fingerprints.

i guess we'll have to wait and see it in person.

I don't know if anyone watched the entire keynote or not...

but it was AMAZING the way he slammed Microsoft's "Zune"....

Steve Jobs is an absolute pimp.

Patents are for inventions.

Copyrights are for works fixed in a tangible medium (music, books, magazines).

Trademarks are for product names, brand names, and symbols, used in trade.

iPhone has been trademarked by Cisco, and Apple is buying the right to use it from Cisco.

The screen is 320x480. The amount of GB is exactly what I'd expect for a device with flash RAM, a hard drive would kill the battery life. That shit is the easiest to change so of course it'll be improved when technology does.

As much as I think the thing is hott, I wouldn't buy it as-is. The price and contract are a killer, but prices will come down. The original ipod was $500 for 5GB or some shit, once this gets down to $300 or so then everyone can have giant boners over it. In the meantime we can mock the people who shelled out all that money while secretly being envious.

Yes, 4GB/8GB flash memory is perfect. I'm sure one day that'll come out with models with 50GB, but the tech isn't there quite yet. Plus, the first versions of most new products from Apple usually have a kink or two that gets fixed/refined in the subsequent generations, which are usually lower priced.

My jaw dropped from just watching the presentation on the Apple website. This phone is pretty much going to change everything. They're hoping to sell 10 million units by the end of 2008. I bet they go over that mark easily, as long as they can make them fast enough for the demand.

Samsung makes a 32GB flash drive and is developing a 100GB drive currently. So, i'd say that 4-8GB drives are FAR from "perfect".

the problem is that flash costs about $30/GB. how many cameras, minis, nanos, pdas, psps, etc. have to be sold before this shit gets more affordable?

1. Dear Brian, This phone is obviously not for you. Smart phones are for smart people. reminder: this is a PHONE.

2. Smart phones are not for the broke college students like myself. If you have a smart phone already, you know how pricy they are. A couple hundred more should be nothing for rich folk.

3. “whatever song I want whenever I wanna hear it”- radical concept, but crazy enough to worrrr….nah, that would never fly, keep dreaming.

4. “i'm not thrilled. i really don't need all that shit.” Matty, read 1 and 2 above and then shuthefackup.

5. Boner

eddie, you fucking douchebag - the point of a combination phone/mp3 player is that you only need ONE device to do both. i wouldn't call this integration, yet, smartypants.
