"It's Good To Know Zach Braff Is Thinking Of (The New Pornographers)"

The New Pornographers' Challengers is a post-Evaluation champ, so we're always overjoyed when news related to the members of the Canadian power-pop supergroup slides across our desks. In the September issue of Stuff (we usually read it for the pictures, swear), Carl Newman's interviewed: turns out he has more of a connection to the Garden State than the fact it abuts his Brooklyn digs.

Via Stuff:

It’s funny. We got a call that said Zach Braff really wanted to use a song “Miracle Drug” in The Last Kiss. It ended up not working, but part of me was thinking, will this be Garden State: Part Two? Then he ended up using the song in The Ex, but it was too little, too late. There’s only one chance for the lightning strike of Garden State. But it’s good to know Zach Braff is thinking of us.
After reading that we realized we forgot who actually was on the soundtrack outside of Iron & Wine, Nick Drake, Coldplay, and the life-changing Shins. As a refresher, the film's tracklist in all its Grammy-winning, indie yuppie glory:
01 Coldplay - "Don't Panic"
02 The Shins - "Caring Is Creepy"
03 Zero 7 - "In The Waiting Line"
04 The Shins - "New Slang"
05 Colin Hay - "I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You"
06 Cary Brothers - "Blue Eyes"
07 Remy Zero - "Fair"
08 Nick Drake - "One Of These Things First"
09 Thievery Corporation - "Lebanese Blonde"
10 Simon & Garfunkel - "The Only Living Boy In New York"
11 Iron And Wine - "Such Great Heights"
12 Frou Frou - "Let Go"
13 Bonnie Somerville - "Winding Road"
Wonder if Braff would score the indie romance any differently three years later. Remy Zero?

why would he not include the Remy Zero song now?

it was already six years old when Garden State came out.

"Fair" fit that scene of the movie perfectly. No need to change it at all.

Caught GS on IFC the other night and started to feel strangely old.

I'd not really seen it since theatres and I remember then being so happy that it was so zeitgeisty and beautifully photographed.

(Not to mention preceded by what's still probably the best trailer ever cut: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=la53nY41c9M&mode=related&search=)

Seeing it this time, I felt a little stupid for being so excited by some retrospectively dumb scenes, IE: "If nothing else you'll be remembered by this one thing!"

But still found myself surprised to actually find some mature depth and humor I never really caught on to.

All in all, let's hope this guy gets prolific in a hurry.

the first time i saw garden state, there was a split second where i thought the scene with the turbulence from the beginning was actually a foreshadow to his return flight to LA going down, and in that moment it was a pretty stunning film in my mind.

Then, Zach Braff got off the plane instead and made a run for Natalie Portman, and the whole thing was ruined... its still fun though whenever I encounter someone who adored the movie to simply respond with "Zach Braff shoulda died in a plane crash" and watch their reactions

It is impossible for a human being to look like more of a douche in a photograph than Braff does in that one.

hey, not too much hating on GS. i remember watching the trailer for months before the movie and at the time, it lived up to every expectation. looking back it might be a bit well, emo, but for goodness sake did i love that film at that point in my life.

to address the issue about old songs on the soundtrack, a seattle magazine just interviewed james mercer of the shins and asked what it was like to re-promote their first album, after "cheutes to narrow" had already been released (because garden state featured 2 songs from "inverted..."). mercer said that braff had contacted them about using the songs when the movie was still in pre-production, years before it was released. so i would guess that much of the film was designed around specific songs and braff stuck to it.

Just wait until Zach Braff plays Elliott Smith in an upcoming biopic...

I had friends who watched the trailer over and over and who liked the movie despite it being a huge piece of shit. Totally agree he should have died. And taken Natalie Portman with him. She was sooo annoying.

I liked Garden State better when it was called the Graduate, and didn't blow.

whoever cast Natalie Portman in GS would've also cast her as both of the girls in Ghost World. The world needs to realize she's not an actress; she's a model.
