In a VMA preview piece the other day, the New York Times put MTV and VMA-opening pop tart Britney Spears in the same (sinking) boat: "Both will be trying to recapture better days on Sunday as the music network shows its annual presentation of the Video Music Awards." What better excuse could there be for a Stereogum liveblog?
Yep it's going down. Like the show's ratings. (zing) But along with MTV's identity crisis and the VMA's $10K gift bags, we're curious about some stuff that hits a little closer to home. J.U.S.T.I.C.E. up against Beyonce, Amy, Justin, and Rihanna? Foo Fighters performance (from the suite!) featuring Josh Homme and Mastodon? Peter Bjorn & John and Kanye under the same roof? OK bad example, there. But you get it. Remember, MTV's not repeating the broadcast (not this version, anyway). So in honor of this "one-time telecast!" we'll bring you our "one-time-liveblog!" See ya at 9 PM EST. Unless Vanessa Hudgens shows up naked at the Pre-Show.

The only reason I even care about the VMA's, is cause I work right by the Palms, and I know on Sunday night it's going to take me 2 fucking hours to get home from all the traffic. Ugh. Couldn't they do it on the strip where locals don't go??

Hudgens' move is both smart and stupid at the same time: smart because, unlike Antonella Barba and hundreds of disgraced beauty queens and America Idols before her, she fessed up first. Denying it only causes the gossip tabs and paparazzi to dig in harder until she admits anyhow. Points for cutting to the chase.
It's stupid though because it doesn't matter what she does. She has allowed herself to be lumped into that same category of 'young star deemed slut'. It's easy to guess that the photo was taken and given to a boyfriend of some sort. Somehow it escaped his possession, either by chance or by choice, and all hell's breaking loose.
If she wasn't a part of two of Disney's most lucrative properties in the last ten years, she might have been able to spin it. As it stands now, I can imagine Disney brass trying to figure out how to gracefully write her character out of the frighteningly inevitable "HSM3 - Graduation, Yeah!"

And to anyone who says I'm rambling, guilty as charged. Brevity is the better part of wit and I'm often witless. However, I post these things because it's a chance to actually dialogue on the subject, to have a conversation about what's going on in pop culture, not just to flag it with "that rocks!" or "fuckin' sucks".
If this situation has bothered me at all, it has been because instead of really getting into a topic, folks would rather shoot me down. And that's fine. Free speech and such is good. If I complain about your complaints, I shouldn't be allowed to make my own (and I'm going to leave it there).
