Jay-Z + Radiohead = Jaydiohead Considering the publicity wonders The Grey Album worked for Danger Mouse, we're surprised it's taken so long for someone to cook this one up. (Girl Talk did it for like 30 seconds, so that doesn't count.) Enter the enterprising DJ Minty Fresh Beats, who's mashed instrumental tracks from OK Computer, Kid A, and In Rainbows with various Jigga raps on a set titled Jaydiohead. Download it at jaydiohead.com. The sound you hear in the interim is a million DJs slapping their foreheads at once.

HAHAHA, I was thinking about the same thing, but seriously. . . music has been seriously violated! So have my ears! If someone put Common over those beats, I would accept it, Onry Ozzborn or Saul Williams and we're getting closer. . . even Eminem! Oh, well. . . that might've created some kinda audio black hole or implosion in the space-time continuum. I'm actually a little surprised that no catastrophic event has happened. My room mate is amazed the speakers didn't catch fire.

okay people, get real - this mashup album isnt that bad, especially if you are a fan of both artists. I dont think the whole thing is a success, and none of the track titles are, but I think he did a decent job overall. standouts: the karma police one, the i might be wrong one, and the 15 step one.

Ummmm... the 15 step track is really poorly timed with Jay's raps... I don't care about wether mash-ups are in vogue right now, so long as the producer is creative or creating something new and unique out of the original pieces. From the few tracks I sampled at this website this guy doesn't do anything except take popular radiohead songs and jay-z verses exactly where you predict he'll take them. His "Minty Fresh" drops are really obnoxious too. Not worth a second listen.

I'm not against this as a concept, but the beats just generally don't fit the flow (save for a couple of tracks). Simply matching tempo isn't enough. That's what made The Grey Album stand out from 99% of other mashup projects.

The Grey Album was a little more than just a mash-up album if you ask me. Danger Mouse really reworked The Beatles' songs to make them much more choppy and beat-like.

Danger Mouse could have just shopped each individual beat out to a different artist, and I still think the tracks would have ended up pretty great. As it is (was), it's more like a mixtape that happens to sample only two albums.

OP: "The sound you hear in the interim is a million DJs slapping their foreheads at once."

You missed a few words. Should read :

"A million NO VISION ASSCLOWN TRYING TO GET SHINE OFF DOING THE MOST OBVIOUS AND PLAYED OUT SHIT DJs are smacking their foreheads."

Those of us with actual vision would never ever dream of doing such an incredibly predictable "mash up," especially with the tired ass Jay-Z acapellas, 4 years after the Grey Album.

ruhroh, is this like Girl Talk 'saving mashups'?

The sound you hear is not DJ slapping their foreheads, they're either loading their guns or slamming the door. As the poster before beat me to it - using Jay-Z is so played out it's not true amongst the mashup community.

At least it's sort of in time, but compared to say Amplive's or Earworm's Kanye vs Radiohead (I would say that ; -) it really doesn't gel for me.

1. This has got to stop. There's infinitely less challenge when using acapellas anyway.

2. Jay-Z is one of the worst MCs to mashup because his style is to jump on and off beat constantly. If the DJ cutting and pasting the tracks isn't crafting a fucking masterpiece, it's an almost guaranteed fail.

Hey it's not really that bad!
No Karma, Fall in Step, and Ignorant Swan work out pretty well. The rest are a bit too uneven for a match.
I particularly like how most the tracks use the poignant Jay Z tracks with more substance (i.e. the past demons, hustling guilt, and justifying morality) than the frivolous and indulgent lifestyle pieces (like tracks about clubs, booze, and respect amongst the rapper community).

As for future mashing:
Jay Z and Fleet Foxes or
Jay Z and She & Him
might be impossible though. Possible to mix, but deplorable for doing so.

Im not quite sure if you are attacking the grey album or merely citing it as a jay-z mix. However, if it is the former you need to take a step back and rethink your whole perspective on music. The grey album set the standard for all that is good in this world. Ok maybe i dont fee quite that strongly about it but it was amazing, and it was the original. So i'm with ya on the neverending jay-z mash-ups but dont hate on the Grey Album

I think that using the term "mash-up" pretty much says that you are not ever qualified to talk about hip-hop, ever. The term is "blend", and us colored folk have been doing this wacky, far-out innovative technique for over 20 fucking years, with people like Ron G and Dirty Harry making some of the illest tapes ever. Shit, Even Peanut Butter Wolf has been putting raps over Tears for Fears "Head Over Heels" for 10 fucking years.

That being said, I think this "Jaydiohead" is far more entertaining than ANY of the other Jay-Z blends put out. Danger Mouse's shit was garrr-bahhge.

Firstly, why is everyone asking if mash-ups are getting old as though there are a 5-year old fad? People have been making mash-ups for at least 20 years before the word "mash-up" was used. Philosophers since time immemorial have questioned how creative one can be if you can only combine existing ideas. For example, if you have a concept of gold, and a concept of a mountain, is a golden mountain a creative idea? Is a C-major triad more than a "mash-up" of C, E and G? Get used to a mash-up culture; it's evident everywhere, not just in media, that there will be more in the future. Whether you like it or not is a personal feeling which you are welcome to. I myself can't listen to any one song without thinking of at least 4 that could play with it harmoniously.

As far as this album goes, I think the production is well done, although Minty Fresh relies on a lot of the same tricks in each track. Chorus throws, Vari-Fi, etc are cool FX, but using the same ones in each song make it sound like he's using the same template for each song. Also, I have to agree, these Jay-Z A Cappellas are old for the decade; lots of people made Jay-Z mashups after the wildfire success of the Grey Album. This album feels a little bit late. I mean, there's nothing to stop me from creating the Jay-Zeppelin album, not even bitterness. I simply don't find that exciting, certainly not more exciting than listening to an original Led Zeppelin album. I don't feel that I'm pushing myself to the limits of exploration by doing that., regardless of what anyone else has to say about my lack of notoriety.

So, sorry that I got so far off track, it seemed there was a lot to respond to. In summation, the album sounds good, but it is a freshman effort. I could take it or leave it.
