Johnny Marr & David Cross Cover Bank Of America's "One"
We obviously picked the wrong Modest Marr gig to go to this week. Last night, folks at the Bowery Ballroom were treated to a rendition of corporate America's hottest viral video. Herewith, Johnny Marr as Jim Dubois and David Cross as Ethan Chandler:
Thanks Angry Citizen, who taped most of it before security made him stop. (FYI: Cross also performed the tune at Comix a few days ago.)
Do you think Marr had seen the BOA video, or Cross was just like, "Okay man, you just play 'One,' and I'm gonna sing about a bank ... trust me, it'll kill."
Card-carrying U2 fans ... what's in your wallet?

You are a fool. David Cross is a genius.

I concur. Then again, one can't be on arrested development and mr show w/o being funny, and I realize I sound like a poseur, but I do think that. I also think that I've gained more respect for johnny marr, if that's possible.

can we switch to marrdest mouse, please

How many times did he have to watch that to memorize the words?

Yeah, I do like Marrdest Mouse better! Good call. We should take a vote.

oh, my goodness, what an enormous surprise that the guy that can't spell "boring" is not amused by David Cross.

ohmygoodness.

Yeah! Yeah! Marrdest Mouse! Let's see more of the same and nothing of variety ever! I hate funny things! I hate all other things too!
sarcasm.
David Cross = Funny

he had a music stand in front of him and is clearly glancing at it, i doubt he memorized anything

I like how most of the audience seems to knows the song already...why can't every town be as cool as NYC?

Damn, I was hoping for a Modest Mouse watercooler post...

Why am I not shocked that David Cross is doing some lame "ironic" schtick?

I was into this months ago, before all of you. I heard the original guy perform it at a club downtown in like August, it was insane.
OK, it was more of an offsite, at the Courtyard Marriott, but still, you weren't there.

word on the switch to Marrdest Mouse.

no, you totally didn't pick the mm gig to go to. because this one totally sucked. they looked miserable and sounded even worse. marr seemed to have no idea what was happening, and apparently isaac's idea of "performing" these days is to flit between bouts of ambivalance, berating the sound guy and forgetting the words to songs.
and yes, i've seen mm enough to know that their shows are usually a crap shoot. i've just never seen a crap shoot this crappy before.

Modest Mouse at WOW Hall, Eugene, Oregon, 1997. It's been downhill since then. David Cross was there but he wasn't famous yet and I totally slept with him.

"I like how most of the audience seems to knows the song already...why can't every town be as cool as NYC?"
are you saying that because new york is filled with people who spend there days looking at blogs and watching video's of singing bankers that makes it cool. don't get me wrong i think nyc is cool, but for other reasons.

David Cross's double-disc comedy CD (I forget what it is called) is really funny too.

The modest mouse shows were at Webster Hall last week. Right?

Nevermind. I just noticed that they played both venues. Ignore me. It's monday.

I agree - if "cool" is spending your time watching soul-destroying viral video (yet appreciating it ironically), then "cool" is no longer as desirable as it once was.
But more importantly - does Raul Gonzales want to kick David Cross' ass?

so much funnier when they do it
?

I think that this cover is a lot funnier in theory than in practice.
And I can't say David Cross hasn't made me chuckle in the past, but he's so smug and makes such lazy jokes anymore, I can't stand him. Ugh.

Sounds like there's a bunch of Dane Cook fans in here.
David Cross is funny, but this song goes on a little long.
Score = 0
Dane Cook and David Cross are about equally unfunny, but at least Cook is earnest, while Cross hides behind some smug "if you didn't laugh it's cause you didn't get it" demeanor.
I want to punch both of them in the face, but I want to punch Cross in the face a bit more.

Himpty, come home! We done leff a bowl of Himpty kibble by the tires on the porch out to the back, right next to where Donald-Sue got born and is buried! Come on home! Big Stephanie and Otter misses you!

Today's Wall Street Journal's Cubicle Culture section opines..."The workplace isn't the best venue for a gig. Corporate anthems don't inspire the waving of Bic lighters as much as a run for cover; rock 'n' roll and corporate culture are unbridgeable contexts. And it's hard to watch colleagues be so moved by their own performance, eyes closed, swaying, outstretching a hand to grasp -- something."

Oh Jesus - I saw Modest Mouse 3 summers ago, and it was one of the worst experiences. I had been looking forward to it for the longest time, and Isaac was stopping songs halfway through and yelling at the sound guy. We were hot; he poured water all over the people in the front. He took a bottle of Jack Daniels, broke it on stage, then started cutting himself. He quit toward the end of the show in the middle of a song, then came back after 20 minutes of people yelling and bitching for an encore. He started where he had left off, and didn't even finish. I thought he was going to come out and fight the sound guy. It was such waste of time and money.

For those of you who don't find Cross funny i strongley suggest that you listen to his stand up comedy albums! I'm sorry but the man is irrefutably (I don't claim to be a good speller!) funny. The thing about him is that he exposes truths about our soceity and our sheer rediculous natures and easily shattered egos. He talks about things that are important! So listen to this man he has alot to share. Whilst still maintaining a upbeat humor about it all!
