Jon Stewart Cracks Up Students at Alma Mater

The Daily Show's Jon Stewart, a 1984 William & Mary graduate, got lots of laughs and an honorary doctorate yesterday from the school where he confessed he was a mediocre student. Here's a highlight:

"I wanted to bring this up to you earlier about the real world, and this is I guess as good a time as any. I don’t really know to put this, so I’ll be blunt. We broke it.

Please don’t be mad. I know we were supposed to bequeath to the next generation a world better than the one we were handed. So, sorry.

But here’s the good news. You fix this thing, you’re the next greatest generation, people. And even if you don’t, you’re not gonna have much trouble surpassing my generation. If you end up getting your picture taken next to a naked guy pile of enemy prisoners and don’t give the thumbs up you’ve outdid us."

Full text of Jon Stewart's commencement address.

I can't find the text of Jon Stewart's speech yet. Will Ferrell's is here http://www.commencement.harvard.edu/ferrell.html for those who haven't read it.

Why couldn't Jon have been at my William and Mary graduation? We had a homophobic, horribly conservative congressman speak instead.

In any case, I always find humor in the fact he attended such an uptight school. I can only imagine the feathers he must have ruffled.

I love his humor and insight. Sigh.

silvie.. i was class of '99. W+M had Senator Warner I believe.. or some conservative turbodouche.. the ballot you had to fill out to "vote" had him, Justice Scalia, and I think Maggie Thatcher.

holla- i was class of 99 too. daily show had begun a year before and my other liberal / non-greek-system friends watched religiously.

in any case, i hardly remember having to vote. i probably would have gone with maggs.

i'm glad the kids got him this year, for sure. a school like that needs a good, wholesome, leftie kick in the ass.

I was at the graduation as a proud parent. It was great. There was no official media coverage or taping done, unfortunately. (His dry delivery made the stuff twice as funny as reading it.) The people next to me were absolutely furious, as were probably 50% of the attendees. But the other 50% of us appreciative parents, and especially the students, made enough noise to fill W&M Hall.
