Joy Division Graffiti Invades Silver Lake

Hipsters are tagging Ian Curtis' legendary motto in Silver Lake, and Blogging.la is pissed:

Seriously, what kind of faux-gangster tags a wall in SILVER LAKE with "Love Will Tear Us Apart XOXO"?!?! Is that what the kids think is cool? Is there cred in that? Silver Lake isn't THAT horribly hipster-gentrified that dropped Joy Division lyrics gets you street cred (though god help you all if 'indie cred' translated to street cred) If you know that black Ford Focus in the picture above, go punch the stupid driver and their stupid friends in their stupid necks!

Clap My Bricks Up.

i like to imagine some distant, future band naming themselves "love will tear us apart" on the way back from practice, and not knowing where it's from.

I live diagonally on the next block from the CYHSY wall, it's been cleaned up now so I don't get the rush of seeing it anymore. Blaah.

CAP needs to come to LA and go over that with some throw-ups.

haha, lulz 4eVAR

I wish someone would spray paint Joy Division song titles on my street blocks...but I live in Small Unknown Suburb, USA, where all the kids are about as far from indie as the sun from Pluto, so I won't hold my breath.

And thanks for the idea, jim. lol

I recall ten years back or so being at Union Station in Chicago someone had sharpied/markered "It's so easy to laugh it's so easy to hate - it takes guts to be gentle and kind" on the mens room mirror.

Where is the bridge that says "I don't want the world, I just want your half."???

Even Urban Outfitters have t-shirts that say Love Will Tear Us Apart! Is this now going to be a trend?!

LL, nice reference!

the only bridge that says anything I can remember is Trenton's "Trenton Makes, the World Takes"

At least it was a line from a good band.

The graffiti could have been from Pres. of the United States

"She's lump, she's lump, she's in my head."

at a restaurant i visited a couple years ago in LA's sexy neighbor, the OC, the waiter had "love will tear" and "us apart" tattooed ON THE INSIDES OF HIS WRISTS, LIKE WHERE HE WOULD OTHERWISE HAVE SLASHED THEM. i believe the expression is "*facepalm*"?

Honestly? They were probably listening to Fall Out Boy when they "tagged" that wall.

Re: TMBG, yep it's Ana Ng. Good to see some fellow TMBG geeks on here. Nice to know they'll never be "hip" so I'll never have to defend their trendiness.

No doubt this tag is part of the advance promo for the forthcoming JD biopic. Watch for tags in other large markets along the lines of "confusion in her eyes that said it all - she's lost control" and such.

That tag is around the corner from my house, it just makes me laugh...what used to be just a wall is now an iconic wall, written about on blogs.

yay

I don't usually type like that, anyway. But I wasn't aware of a JD biopic...I'll need to find out more about that.

Last year, I took the train to New York and visited a friend of mine in Brooklyn, where we went to some lame bar full of hipsters. I had changed into my non-suit clothes quickly after work before catching the train and had tossed on an old TMBG tshirt.

Anyway, the hipsters in the bar whispered and giggled about it relentlessly.

When did graffiti taggers start writing in such a neat, legible hand? Really, I bet both are some sneaky attempt at promotion.

THIS JUST IN: "Love will tear us apart" wall has already been painted over. It is just a wall again.

LA really does have a super-gothy streak running through it, though - all those stories about Morrissey's legendary cache with East LA 2nd-generation Mexican kids to thread.

I hasten to add that tagging JD lyrics is only acceptable up until the 9th grade. And hell, ny way of comparison, my friends spent their 9th grades tagging gigantic leaking penises on church walls, so these kids should probably step their game up.

i sincerely think that love will tear us apart would have been nice if it didnt have the xoxo.. what the hell?
but clap your hands say yeah. what the hell? that is the most pathetic way to publicize. at least love will tear us apart was reference to a feeling, and a former band.. i dont know..

Has anyone tried the question answering service that was talked about on Said the Gramophone? It's pretty funny. Just e-mail any question you want to q@askforcents.com, and within a few minutes you get two answers e-mailed back to you. I asked what the best album of 2006 was so far, and I was recommended the best of Tom Petty.

I'm a suburban geezer who listens to JD on my iPod at the gym. I have a neighbor, another pathetic suburban geezer, who has every single Factory record in the original packaging....

Our kids roll their eyes and think we're sad whenever we start talking about Ian Curtis.

fucking kids.

i've tagged a wall in silverlake recently.
but at least i had the pretentious sense to quote marie antoinette. i believe historical references earn approximately 3.5 times more obnoxious cred points than band lyrics in today's market.

Deborah Curtis had Love Will Tear Us Apart inscribed on Ian's memorial stone

and xo seems so elliott smith-ish

if smith-ish is a word

I'd rather have seen HATE will bring us together, again

Is this really worse than the Elliot Smith album cover wall on Sunset, where people still scribble messages and leave flowers and candles and crap even though the guy died and eon ago?
