June 2004 Playlist
Last night we went with Peggy and Will to see Beulah. They were awesome. I grabbed the setlist when the lights came on -- I'm such a loser. Eliza got a "Beulah Loves Me" t-shirt. I got one that says "Beulah Saves." Peggy doesn't wear concert tees because she is a fashionista.
My new bandwidth plan is much more conducive to MP3s, so here's what's rocking my iPod these days...

Blanche - "Who's To Say"
Blanche's brand of old-timey folk has found fans in fellow Detroiter Jack White (he plays the guitar solo on this track) as well as Brendan Benson, who produced and contributes vocals. You can buy Blanche's debut from indie Cass which claims, "This is the record that's going to bankrupt Cass. Hot-ass digipak, a booklet with full-color printing, a CD that plays on any record player and...oh, the music? Shit, this stuff will melt your heart, kiss your cheek and then leave you for dead. For fans of Hank Williams, hospitals, the Gun Club and melancholia. We're putting all our eggs in this basket, so start making some omelettes." You can also download White Stripes' cover of "Who's To Say" here.
Rjd2 - "Through The Walls"
Rjd2's new disc is real proof of DJing as art. Buy Since We Last Spoke and throw your DJ Shadow records out the window. This time around he's pushing the alt-rap genre forward by embracing classic rock sounds and song structures. "Through The Walls" starts off sounding like the Cars, but then there's the spooky piano trills, and ... a guitar solo! (Fits nicely with Viv's "Summer of Prog" theory.) It's really catchy. When I met Nick last weekend he confirmed its awesomeness -- and he knows much more about the Def Jux crew than me -- so take his word for it. This song isn't representative of the whole album, which features a lot of mellow synths that give off an ambient soul vibe. But that's good too. It's got something for the whole family. In fact, the track I'm listening to now sounds JUST LIKE Spoon! Oh, wait ... iTunes switched from Rjd2 to Robbers On Hight Street.
Also: in between songs at the show last night, Miles Beulah started talking shit about Bush and someone in the audience began arguing with him. It was amusing. Rock the vote!

Good work on the mp3s. These two are great.
I'm not completely sold on the new RJD2. It's good, and slightly reminiscent of the Avalanches in the sample-based-pop style.
Who does the vocals on this track, do you know?

anyone get to bowery early enough to see dios? they sounded amazing but looked so bored/bitter/disgruntled, i almost felt uncomfortable enjoying it. sibling issues? loose cannon lead singer issues? or were they just that high? curious if anyone else noticed or has theories...

nice video for that new streets single at their website.

i don't know the scope of information you're willing to cover, but i just thought people should know what's really going on out there.

i just saw rjd2 in two weeks ago in la. to say the least, it was an amazing set. i had never seen a dj'ing performance and it was surreal just sitting there watching the visuals and listening to his set transform. however, i hadn't heard of mike relm before the show and he opened up. if you ever have the chance to see this guy, he shreds the wax left and right. #1 scratcher in the states and #2 in the world. his visuals were awesome and his was equally amazing as rjd2's, just a different style with more recognizable beats. i should throw his album online since it explicitly states "unauthorized copies and sharing of this album are encouraged."

scott herren still makes better records than both rjd2 and shadow.

Beulah is ruthlessly cool- but did they give any word on the impending break-up? I'm pretty sure Yoko hasn't gone gold yet, and I think that was the necessary condition of them staying together. Also, Robbers on High Street's "(Hot Sluts) Say I Love You" = best use of parentheses in a song in the past two years? yes.

I love that RJD2 track, I never really liked anything by him but wow, it was on repeat this morning while I was getting ready for work.

He does the vocals himself;
http://citypaper.net/articles/2004-03-18/cover5.shtml
"Apparently that includes recording his own voice. RJ spent months talking to three different singers about vocals to add to the finished "Through the Walls" instrumental track. When it started to look like scheduling would keep the song off the album entirely, he decided to do the vocals himself.
(Interestingly, the record's press release mentions a very special guest. "At first I was going to lie about me singing on the record," he says. "I thought it'd be corny, like, "Hey, this guy thinks he's fucking Fred Astaire."')"

viva beulah!
just out of curiosity, what *was* the setlist for the bowery show?
i caught them at north six and it was a pretty amazing show. they rock in that way only san franciscans can...
i bought their "demo." i'm not sure if it was the most intelligent purchase but one can never have too much beulah, i suppose.. (it was that or a shirt. decisions, decisions!)
and referring to that other comment, dios did not disappoint, either. they seemed pretty happy to be there.

Beulah are not breaking up, fwiw.
sad i'm going to probably miss them here in Minneapolis on Sunday, as i'll be seeing Mclusky at that time. but i've seen Beulah quite a few times, and Mclusky zero, so they win.
