Kanye West Scores Impossible Mission

So Mission: Impossible 3 is out Friday, and today Tom Cruise takes over Manhattan to celebrate. Gawker reports on the new dad's GMA appearance. He'll hit TRL shortly, then a Lamborghini (by way of boat) will take him to BET's 106 & Park. What, no visit to crazy Blaine? He's gotta be a Scientologist, no?

As much as Stereogum enjoyed the first big screen Mission, the second upped the silly factor a little too much. Can J.J. Abrams and Philip Seymour Hoffman save this sinking ship? What about Kanye's inflated ego? That's gotta help, right?

No dice. "Impossible," our beloved rapper's reworking of Perry Como's "It's Impossible," leaves us underwhelmed ... though it took 50 hours to produce according to MTV News.

KANYE WEST: "My beats is a whole new art form now. It's not just a 15-minute joint. It's not that fast-food shit. You can tell 'Impossible' took hours."
The song, originally intended for Twista's album, was demoted to M:I:3's closing credits when Tom Cruise called. Dude's pretty powerful -- he can magically cut sex scenes out of Sundance premieres and impregnate Dawson's Creek stars with L. Ron Hubbard's frozen sperm.

Let us know if you make it through the whole thing:

Kanye West (Feat. Twista & Keyshia Cole) - "Impossible" (MP3 Link Expired)

UPDATE: Firetruck. Tom took a firetruck from Times Square, leaving Kanye behind to perform the song: "See ya in Harlem brother."

Why's he gotta fuck with Perry Como?

I still haven't heard his take on Lalo Schifrin, but it's no doubt a step up from Limp Bizkit.

Even Limp Bizkit's was better, this is an action film and at least that song had... drums.

The song is pretty hot. That guitar part in the 2nd verse? The syncopated percussion? The subtle horns? You white people jumped ship like quick.

It's not the worst thing I've ever heard but it doesn't at all seem fitting for an action movie like MI:III (I doubt that the movie is gonna actually be worthy of a good soundtrack though)

I was expecting it to sound like the Mission Impossible theme in some way. While it may be an okay song, it seems to have nothing to do with the movie.

I agree with Ricardo, bring back the U2 rhythm section.

note- they said it was going to be devoted to the closing credits- not the theme track of the movie. a lot of action movies have played shitty b-sides by rather ok artists before.

and the unintellignet thing still gets me. i know your point man, but all credibility goes out of the window when shit like that happens.

Am I insane? It's not bad, although his "I'll rap against the melody to sound serious" act is wearing a little thin.

Actually Kanye has done a version of the Mission Impossible theme for the opening credits, and it's worse than "Impossible."

You know how you get embarassed for someone when you see them make a huge mistake? I'm embarassed for Kanye. This song is terrible.

Just as I was thinking Kanye West and the Mission Impossible series couldn't get any worse... That was seriously bad, ended up giving up on it about two thirds through and started listening to Nils Økland's cover of 'While my guitar gently weeps', which a week ago I thought was one of my least favourite tracks ever.
Really can't blame Twista for dropping that one from his album. If it even gets any radio play at all I'd be in shock.
Dare I say it... Bring back the Limp Bizkit track!

"Impossible" = pretty damn mediocre.

Kanye's version of the "Mission Impossible" theme = pretty damn well done.

Impossible was meh. Wasn't terrible though. The Theme remix was fine, nothing wrong with it.

Underwhelming is right - this one was a dud. I guess it's a little subversive that it certainly doesn't sound like it belongs in an action movie. Oh well, beats Limp Bizkit and Metallica. We'll have to see how West's remix of the classic theme turns out.

Thanks for the theme, Dave. For a few seconds I thought I was actally going to like it, but then, nope.

And while the fact that 'Impossible' was meant for the end credits, it still sucks pretty badly.

Dude, Kanye needs to take a breather... I mean I thought his first album was amazing, liked the second a lot, LOVE a lot of the beats he's done.. but I mean he's a little over exposed.. just a little... lol... is he going to have his own video game soon? Kanye got me back into hiphop in a hardcore way... but now the music he pointed me towards is trumping his stuff... slow down there 'ye. I'd rather listen to The Streets.

sure the song's not great, but it's not trash. it's better than the down-south shit on the radio by the longshot.

hipsters, go back to listening to the t.i. record that pitchfork told you to listen to. that's better, right?

the songs cool- yeah i prefered slow jamz, but still. for a mission impossible theme tune this is heavy. if i go an c the movie, this song'll be the only reason why.

Aight, yall are hard to please anyways...but the song impossible is like a different mood than the film itself, the remixed version Kanye did aint got no damn problem wit it.... but that limp bizkit remix was tight and on point it fit into Mission Impossible 2 so yall jus back the F' up on that one

Song has that thing good songs have. Those 15- 20 secs that make you want to listen a bit more, bob your head, and then yeah maybe it dissapoints a little but I think this is mainly because its different. Were used to the same old main stream 3 and a half minute factory music. Everybody hates on artists but to say that this song is horrible is really the problem. Do you realize how difficult it is to create the idea, the beat, the chorus, the rap etc... and then to bring everything together to fit just right. Kanye is an incredible talent. Unfortunately he might be acting like he knows it, but still, his unique flavor is a great credit to modern music.

I think music producers everywhere will appreciate the the technicality of the record, music lovers will appreciate the subtle nuances. Think back, did Lauryn Hill's version of "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" match Conspiricy Theory? When the credits ran you 'sat that ass in that seat 'till the song was over though. This is the same thing. If Kanye is guilty of anything it's thinking that his -ish don't stink and expecting too much from the uninitiated.
