Kanye's Big Day

While I was busy daytripping to vineyards and pirate stores, that out-of-touch trainwreck we call The Grammys Nominations thrust its spotlight on a new crop of overrated "crossover" artists and recently deceased dudes. Album Of The Year and Best New Artist are the only outcomes I tend to remember (not counting Jethro Tull's Best Heavy Metal win in '87), so let's focus our derision on those categories...

Album Of The Year

  • Ray Charles & Various Artists Genius Loves Company
  • Green Day American Idiot
  • Alicia Keys The Diary Of Alicia Keys
  • Usher Confessions
  • Kanye West The College Dropout
Best New Artist
  • Los Lonely Boys
  • Maroon 5
  • Joss Stone
  • Kanye West
  • Gretchen Wilson

I also wanted to write about the CDs I picked up at Aquarius (Japanese acid-folk oddity L and Animal Collective fave Ariel Pink) and tell you about the burrito place Byron recommended, but this Hilton computer sucks. Do you hear me Paris? NOT HOT.

So Grammys ... who wuz robbed? (Full list here.)

Album of the Year:
What SHOULD win: Green Day.
What WILL win: Kanye West.

Best New Artist:
Who SHOULD win: Kanye West.

Kanye's gonna clean up. 8 or 9 for him.

Why is it that of all the awards in the world, the Grammy nominators are the least knowledgeable about the people they are honoring?

At least the motion picture academy has people who made movies and actually watch the movies before nominating them, instead of scouring the charts for names they recognize.

Still, it's great to see David Sedaris get nominated for best spoken word. Woo!

I'm friends with Ariel Pink mind you, but I just cannot understand his music (or how people like it!).

On the other hand - fuck kanye. fuck him in his stupid ass... he's clown shoes at best. If I wanted to see a hairlipped fug rap about being black jesus, I'd call Joaquin Phoenix. And seriously - that Workout video? It's EIGHT FUCKING MINUTES! Kids these days - i just don't get it...

Also hope the big JC is a shoe-in for his noms. He probably is: academies louve posthumous awards.

I totally couldn't give a shit about the other categories. I don't know his work, but this Kanye (stupid name, btw) seems like such a whiny bitch.

Wow, the Pirate Store! Is Karl the pufferfish still alive? I visited SF in June of last year (I'm from Louisiana so it was like "Oh, this is what culture is like. This is nice.") and I think my favorite things about the place were:

1)Waking up to Bay To Breakers passing by my window. A marathon that features kegs???

2)The pirate store/writing workshop

3)the taquerias

I don't think distressing covers it. It is a downright travesty. The 80s were pretty bad - hair metal and Paula Abdul - but I believe we've reached a nadir from which it is impossible to emerge. Marketing and music have become so intertwined that you can't really tell anymore where one begins and the other ends. Stop world, I want to slap Ryan Seacrest.

Gotta agree with everyone who said that the latest Alica album sucks ass. My theory on why the grammy people seem to nominate artists such as Alica Keys, Elvis Costello, and Norah Jones year after year is that the grammy's have taken so much crap over the years for nominating and giving awards to Milli Vanilli and the Starland Vocal Band and so by nominating artists such as Alica, Elvis and Norah they feel that they would get cred with the critics since those artists are the critics darlings. But honestly....Joe Strummer and Johnny Cash nominated for best pop caloboration???? WTF!? The grammy's still don't have much of a clue.

I didn't watch the billboard awards, I just read the synopisis on the ET website...Asshlee Simpson deserves nothing! And she said to the ET reporter that her new tour will get people to shut up about the lip synch scandle....I don't get it, her album was listed as one of Blender magazine's best albums of 2004 me thinks they are on Daddy Simpson's payroll!

Sorry I had to make a comment on the rest of the nominations....Joe Strummer and Johnny Cash in pop WTF......and why the freak isn't Brian Wilson's Smile nominated for record of the year? IMHO I think its far superior to what is nominated. I was quickly looking over the nominees for best rock song and I was looking at the songwriters and I saw Duff and I got scared there for a second I thought maybe the grammy people really didn't have a clue and nominated one of the Duff sisters under the catagory of rock....but then I looked and it was Duff from Velvet Revolver.

I bet Hillary and Haylie are seething cause they aren't nominated in that catagory....I bet Ashlee's pretty miffed too cause she wasn't nominated for best alternative performance..cause she is the most alternative thing about 2004!

I know Beavisoncrack, I totally thought that the Grammy people may have had no clue and nominated the Duff sisters for their oh so punk rockin remake of Our Lips Our Sealed.

The grammy people seem to have no concept of time I noticed that the new Gwen Stefani song is nominated isn't that song less then a month old? And I also noticed that Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton are nominated for their version of Something from The Concert for George.....didn't all that happen about three years ago?

At least the grammy people are sane enough not to nominate The Duff sisters, Good Charlotte or Ashlee Simpson!

Hoobastank is one of the reasons why the CIA should be able to assassinate people legally. That song is one of the worst anythings that has surfaced in the past millenia. Shame on the world for allowing a band of that low embarrasing calibur to even think they deserve anything. I feel bad for them because in their minds they are good and they've just been confused.

And Kanye put Hoobastank on his iTunes playlist which shocked me since his reason was that it was an incredible melody. My god, my god, we have been forsaken- and the Grammy's prove it.

the Grammy nominations are decided by an exclusive committee comprised of 35 year old "has been's"/"wannabe's"/& industry "insiders"...

so its no surprise that these choices are sub-par, at best...

they should let kids from Williamsburg decide the nominees...that way, it would be more hilarious to decide between Bloc Party, the Futureheads, Arcade Fire, the craptastic folk movement spearheaded by Devendra Banhart, & noise bands from Ann Arbor, MI & Rhode Island...

Carl Bean & Beavis on Crack, add Sheryl Crow to the list of performers who will be nominated every year cause the grammy people think that by nominating them they will make up for the mistakes of the past i.e. Milli Vanilli, Melissa Etheridge is another who comes to mind and I see that she is nominated again this year. Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones, Elvis Costello, Sarah McLoughlin, Alica Keys and Melissa Etheridge can release cds of themselves farting and you know it will be nominated for a grammy!

The Grammys might pull an India.re(R&B singer who got 10 nominations and came home empty) on Kanye West.Hopefully Usher pulls a 50cent and goes up for an award that he didn't win but knowing the grammys and judging from last year(Outkast got some grammys and they're album wasn't even that good to me) they probably might give him a couple of awards sadly.I don't think that Usher deserves but like life the grammys aren't always fair.

Kanye West has actually been producing for a while. He's not totally new to the industry. His album is good, but I'm not sure it's THAT good. It seems the nominees are more about who will bring viewers (and ratings) to the show and less about real good, deserving music and artists.

actually, Kanye started out rapping, but nobody gave him any burn...then he tried to get his foot into the industry by producing. After Jay Z got a hold of him, the industry started buzzing for that cat...

Now, we are subjected to listening to his music 24/7 on mainstream radio...call me crazy, but Lil Jon is far more entertaining

Interpol wasn't nominated for anything, so they have some taste.

Also, let's stop bashing the 80's (outside of the clothes, bash the clothes). In the 80's David Lynch had a top rated television show on a major broadcast network, the talking heads were Top 40 artists, and Clear Channel as we know it did not exist.

Finally, (I killed my TV years ago so I didn't see) I heard Ashlee got booed. If that's true, things are looking up.

The video made the list of VH-1's least metal moments, its pretty bad Mariah Skanky rips off Bette Midler in the Rose for the video and in the concert footage with Dave there is bad pyrotechnics and the background backdrop is a huge butterfly....but to make matter worse and even more cheesier Joe Millionare plays her body guard in the video....pretty bad!

I was just reading in Page 6 that the lead singer from Maroon 5 suposedly hooked up with Paris Hilton at the Billboard awards....ewwewww I hope that guy got himself checked for any kind of STD's afterward!
