Kate Bush Speaks Bird, Does Lots Of Laundry

If you read Jim's post about Kate Bush's album cover and thought, "I hope it has a song in bird language ... or one about washing machines" you're in luck.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: At one point on the new album your son can be heard saying, "It sounds like the birds are saying words," and then you proceed to sing in what sounds like some kind of avian language. Do you, uh, speak bird?

KATE BUSH: [Laughs] Not yet. But I'm still working on it!

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: One of the most beautiful new tracks, "Mrs. Bartolozzi," seems to be about doing the laundry. Kate Bush does housework?

KATE BUSH: Yeah, I have spent large amounts of time doing the washing. [Laughs] Some people find this amusing, but I actually do try to run a household...

Beautiful, amusing, or both?

I actually think its kinda amazing. I was underwhelmed by the single, but this song is astounding in a very low-key way.

I was, so I had these fears of "Oh no, not another 'Rubber Band Girl'." I think I'm actually going to try to get my hands on this puppy.

Really its good? Im scared after Rubberband Girl. That scarred me and angered me as I love and still do all her other work.

December Will Be Magic Again is still the most astounding thing she has ever done. A Triumph.

Definitely better than The Red Shoes!

Okay, I'm gonna make a douchey indie observation, but compare the piano line in "Prelude" to the vocals in "The Yellow Ones" by Pinback. I can't help but notice it every time.

Scott, thanks for the Madonna link yesterday. You saved me some cash and I got the album a week early. Double score.

Well maybe it's just me but what I'm hearing is both sad and erotic at once.
I've felt that only "The Dreaming" was pure genius, and the rest was tedious in comparison, but I may have to buy this one . . .

I'm a bit disapointed by this album.

Singing about washing machines? Come on! I tried to get past it, but I can't.

Um, can somebody tell me why everyone likes this chick?

Because she is just that cool.

I prefer "The Kick Inside" myself... I can't wait to hear "Pi" though.

I agree with Carlolove - thanks for the Madonna link! Not only did I save money and get the album a week early, but I just committed a subversive act toward the money-hungry record companies! Triple Score!

I personally think that "washing machine" is about a wife who tells about the day when they brought her the message that her husband had died/was killed. So she does the laundry for keeping away the moment of realising the full meaning of what has happened by doing something 'normal', the laundry. "it lookes so alive, nice and white..."

I think the whole album is awesome, and I had it lying round for days before I actually DARED listening to it, because I was so scared of being disappointed...

You guys must have never done the wash!

This song is erotic (clothes tumbling all together and bodies moving in the sea..."little fish swim in between my legs"...), whimisical (yes, "sloshy, sloshy, sloshy") and profoundly loving with an everyday-for-a-lifetime tone. Erotic, whimisical and profoundly loving -- what more could you want out of life?

I personally think Aerial is without doubt one of Kate's greatest albums to date. It has the wierdness of The Dreaming, the literacy of Hounds of Love and so much more that none of her other albums dare to investigate. It certainly isn't a commercial or easy album to access but if you persevere it opens up whole other dimentions...amazing. After Hounds and the Kick Inside it has to be my favorite (it just trumps The Dreaming- it's that good)!
