Killers Watercooler

Cara and I went to see Asobi Seksu at Rothko last night. Rothko's doorman is having problems these days because neighbors like to throw water at the hipsters who congregate outside. Apparently I was on the list, but I didn't know that so I shelled out the $8 to get in. The band was pretty good. There were some sound problems, but I got the gist. Really liked Mellowdrone too. And Cara found the crowd to be not annoying!

On the way to the club I passed Mercury Lounge where there was a huge line of people trying to get into Killers. Cab driver Miguel was astonished:

Miguel: Oh look at the people! They are crazy.
Stereogum: They're waiting for the Killers. They're really hot now!
Miguel: The Killers? Why? Do they kill the notes?
Stereogum: (laughing) Yeah! They kill the notes!
Migeul: Haaaa. I just thought of that now. It popped in my head! Do you know them? Tell them I said "The Killers kill the notes!"

Did anybody go last night?

Coming from a guy who was extremely impressed with the killers every time he has seen them, I have to say the show lacked energy. Maybe it was the short set. Maybe it was the lame crowd. Whatever it was, I hope they pick it up a bit tonight; I don't wanna be a hater.

Interesting take Carla: The Killers = Spandau Ballet of 2004?

I thought everyone LOVED the Killers?

Ruttner, I wanna see a flame war!

when I think spandau ballet, I think momentarily overhyped stupidly earnest new wave for people who want to like music but just don't get it.

so I stand by my comparison. oh, and I LOVED Franz at Volume by the way, which dq's me as a hater ;)

Jeez...I really liked the show...again...when everyone else hated it. I thought the band was surprisingly mellow, but it worked for them. Brandon Flowers has a very Morrissey-esque stage presence...nonchalant, non-intense...and it was good. I'm not gonna go into my beef with people complaining about crowds again...but the people who got into the show were either on the list(connected)...or had to show up 4 hours before the band went on (fans)...Hard to complain that people were there who didn't really want to. I think these "bad crowd" rants are verging on hating the game over hating the playa...

I think the band might've lacked energy cause the room was so fucking hot. One of them was sort of disappointed by their lack of energy too, and since i've seen them about 10 times I can tell you that it wasn't really normal of them. Typically Brandon jumps around and dances a lot more... but uhmm... it was hot and his belly was full of food. Regardless, i thought they sounded so fucking great. Really great. And a mellow brandon is still more interesting to look at then most bands. The songs are there. Tight and really fucking wonderful. "Midnight Show" should be a single i think... people seemed to really dig that one. Uh... I would see them again tonight if i could!

I LOVE THE KILLERS!

The Killers were good despite the crowd being dead and microphone problems through the set. Johnny Lives was good even if Johnny was a little drunk. Worst part of the show - 2 photographers who pushed and shoved insisting they needed to get photos since "this is the last itme you'll ever be able to see the Killers in this small a place dude"! Arg.

the killers are disgustingly bad. their formula is play music that could be from the eighties, wear the same clothes everyone else does, and be completely full of themselves, in hopes that this narcisissm will be mistaken for artistic virtue. they are horrible. i had a girlfriend who looked like a boyfriend, who looked like a dog, who looked like a cat, who looked like my ass.

"i had a girlfriend who looked like a boyfriend, who looked like a dog, who looked like a cat, who looked like my ass."

HAHAHA. yes. so true (eventhough i enjoy listening to this song) the lyrics ARE a bit...asinine.

I waited in line for 3 hours and couldn't get in and I was pissed. I swear that has never happened to me before. I have to (a) start sucking some serious dick; (b) get a job at some shitty magazine; or (c) resume only going to shows for more established acts. I am too old for this ground-floor shit.

When is that Spandau Ballet reunion show?

i thought the killers were great, but jonny lives was exceedingly mediocre. the difference between the amount of pretentious attitude of their singer versus the chiller vibe of flowers was really evident. not a good opener for the killers at all.

actually, I saw all the bands and quite frankly, the last band was by far the best. earlymay has some of the best sounds in NY. not to mention the fact the the drummer is one of the best I've seen.
