Kings Of Leon Think You're Ruining Their Concerts The Followills tell NME: "It's difficult when you make a new record and you wanna play all the new songs live, but with technology these days, there'll be someone out there with a recorder and it kinda spoils it for us. You don't wanna play too many new songs because otherwise they'll be on YouTube or something, so we have to pick and choose. If it was up to us we'd play all the new songs because they're so fun to play." So you might wanna stop. Or, keep on doing it, depending on which side of this scrum you are.

in this day and age you can't expect people not to record concerts. And they really shouldn't be complaining because if anything, it helps the band. It gives people a chance to preview the new material and look forward to hearing the album versions. They lost the Jesus hair, now they should lose the Jesus-esque martyr act.

sure, I guess that makes sense. I mean, I'm sure that picasso would have loved it if people got a hold of his rough sketches. Or maybe the next Martin Scorcese film will have some raw footage released online early. I'm sure that artists just love it when their work gets released before it's completed. You are really smart. Go into marketing. wait, better idea; stop being so goddamn self righteous

That's right, Kings of Leon, keep digging. Now, climb on in and shut the door.

I also don't want to pay $41 + fees per ticket to see them at the Warfield in SF. forgive me if this has something to do with the warfield recently reopening. Are they that expensive elsewhere?

perhaps I am new reading stereogum RSS- but does evey other post have to be another blah blah blah-band said, she said thing? what's the end goal? And what does this have to do with the music? Perhaps new Buzznet/Universal protocol - to get views up- do your best to play out The Hills in the blogs- I know the 20 somethings are weird- but be careful man- cuz when your out of work it won't be as easy as you think.

Trying to think of the last time I heard/saw an amateur MP3 rip or YouTube clip of a new song that was good enough to get excited about. Bottom line is the recorded sound is typically garbage. I wouldn't want that to be someone's first experience of my hard work and creativity either. There are already a couple tracks out there, can't wait to hear the rest!

The 'art' of music is so funny.

At some point bands are going to finally give up on the album being the release vehicle for their music, and go to the idea that if someone's willing to pay 3-4 times as much to see a concert than they are your precious compact disc worth of music... you really shouldn't worry about what happens on your plastic piece of obsolete technology.

Radiohead kinda did a whole tour based on demoing new material that ended up being In Rainbows. Word from that, is that they were kinda stoked having people show up at concerts halfway through the tour knowing all the lyrics to the songs that weren't even done.

The album is dead. Long live the concert. Live the concert, give your fans the best you can give in that show. Spending 2 years and 100,000 bucks on a shiny album people are going to just download off the internet for free anyway doesn't make a lot of sense if you're going to put on a shit show at the same time.

C'mon everybody--- Give the Kings a break. Think about it: if you were an artist, YOU would want to protect your art, right? Of course.

even if ppl do record them, they'll be in crappy quality rite. mite as well create some anticipation for upcoming material. if ppl like the songs enough, they'll buy them in proper quality rite? if they dun like them, then they'll either download / not buy them at all. i dun see y they'r so fussy abt it.

Hey Bingo...
Yup, they have the balls to charge us Torontoians $40 a piece too.
Won't be happening. Too many great shows/bands to see here for a quarter of that price.

The prices are high because the show is something of a "triple bill" with We Are Scientists and The Stills. Also, those who think the band are burning out are sorely mistaken: they keep playing bigger venues (at least in SF), and they're always packed to the gills and sold out ticket-wise.

Kings of Leon ruin their own concerts the second they pick up their instruments.

You're probably a Pumpkins fan, and that's fine. Unless your real name happens to be Iha James, you'd might like to know that James Iha is, in fact, a fan of Kings of Leon- as is Albert Hammond Jr and the Strokes. And as an Iha fan, I'm sure you know that his label represented Albert on his first solo CD. So they're all connected, and they all have mutual respect for each other. Kings of Leon are an amazing live act, and they're obviously worth listening to them if your precious James likes them, don't you think?

Sorry, but you have zero credibility if you have a problem with bootleg live recordings. The only time a band has a right to be pissed about bootlegs is when they're being sold to fans for exorbitant amounts of money in the band's name.

I guess I'd be pretty pissed about bootlegging too if I were in a profit-oriented corporate band like Kings of Leon.

They're going to have to accept it, as there's nothing they can do about it. They can a) get really pissed and alienate their fans or b) be pumped that people actually want to pay attention to their music and find other ways to embrace the "life-streaming" that goes on. Shame how money corrupts art, but that's life.

gah i used to love them, then i got to know them. i can still listen to the songs i guess, but they keep getting lamer. they've gotten bigger, so people interview them. huge mistake. and naming a song 'sex on fire' is...stupid. but, i kind of dig the song.
people with microphones and pens and paper should stop talking to these guys, for their sake.

So the Kings Of Leon think tapers are ruining their live shows? Wow, now there's a discussion about 30 years too late. Upcoming KOL headlines...

"Kings Of Leon Upset By Album Sequencing Forced On Them By 8-Track Magnetic Tape Sound Recording Technology", "Kings Of Leon Playing To Empty Venues and Moving 'Hundreds' Of Units - Band 'Ecstatic" By Positive Changes and Bankruptcy" and "Kings Of Leon Play Show To Singular Taping Fan - Concert Described By Band As 'Ruined' By Incident, Earth Falls Into Sun As Result".

That's exactly the difference between these clowns and a band like Radiohead. protecting your art? what a joke? Like having bootlegged LIVE mp3's or videos on YouTube will ACTUALLY hurt record sales? Who are you kidding? What a joke. If the songs are good enough and people get a taste for them it will actually HELP sales because fans will want the real shit. I dont like this band, never could get into them.

I seriously don't think they meant that they're upset they'll lose money by not selling as many albums. I think they were just talking about the anticipation for the release date, where as everyone would be hearing it together for the first time. I've heard the whole album already and I think it's amazing, and I was willing to spend the 45 bucks to see them play Philly on 11/15, but tix are already sold out and are going for 85-160$ a pop on stubhub and other such ticket hoarding, money grubbing middleman sites. Never buy tickets from any of those sites.
