Kings Of Orange County

If you didn't catch last night's O.C., you missed some hot girl-on-girl cheek kissing and cool tunes...

Sam Roberts "No Sleep"
Air "Universal Traveler"
Viva Voce "Lesson No. 1"
Sunday Runners "Memories Left At Sea"
Lali Puna "Faking The Books"
Stars "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead"
Kings Of Convenience "Misread"
Incidentally, I got an e-mail this morning all the way from CANADA!

hit your site daily, we like it in canada. You have good judgement. Heard about Erlend and the kings of convenience on your site so I thought I'd send you these. I thought you might get a kick out of seeing how close up we got. I especially enjoy the one I got of Erik from like, under his shoe.

Thanks for the pics, Canada!

You can stream "Misread" (the song heard during Caleb's party scene) here or download a live MP3 (and lots of cool covers) here. Enjöy.

ALSO: I'm still desperately searching for someone to install spam-blocking functionality on this site. Stereogum utilizes Movable Type 3.15 running from a Windows server. If you are MT-savvy and think you can help (shit, at this point I'll even pay you) please e-mail me [scott at stereogum dot com] asap.

Are those golf shoes?

Oh, and does anyone know a site where in my free-time I can checkout online poker?

Right now I won't touch Movable Type with a ten-foot pole, but here are some quick tips for locking down MT against spam:

Take the comment links off your front page; spammers use Google to search for 'mt-comments.cgi' (the name of the comment script) and having all those pop-up comment links on your front page entries -- which all point straight to mt-comments.cgi -- is like rolling out the welcome mat for them.

While you're at it, rename mt-comments.cgi to something else and tell Movable Type what you renamed it to. That'll stop most of the automated attacks dead.

Get yourself a host who has mod_security and knows how to use it; I recommend Textdrive (textdrive.com) as they're affordable, reliable and generally far more clueful than the average admins.

Turn off Trackback. Period.

Go Google for "Jay Allen" and install pretty much all the plugins he's ever written.

Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

I saw kings of convenience in North Hampton, MA last week and it was freakin incredible.. these guys are amazing

the highlight of the show for me was ... during "I'd Rather Dance with You" they asked if there were any drummers in the crowd... one guy got up and played drums.. and in the middle of the song another guy who knew the piano to the song asked if he could come up and play along too... it was a lot of fun.. def one of the best shows i've seen in a while

The first step is closing comments on old posts. Have you tried using other plugins with Windows?

If you can't use any MT plugins, I suggest "security by obscurity." Change the name of your comments script and customize your comment form so bots can't use it. If you need help, use the contact form on my website.

I was at that show in Montreal (pictures shown) and it was very good. If your a fan of theirs , i don't see why you wouldn't enjoy them. Im not sure about the other shows but the doors opened at 9 and at 9:20 they came on stage(no opening band) and played for almost 90mins.

Maybe I don't get spam because I don't get the same levels of traffic you do (at least not before you linked to me yesterday!), but I haven't had any spam at all when I have MT configured with trackbacks disabled, accept comments only from registered users. I don't even use any additional plugins.

And you've probably seen this? http://www.sixapart.com/movabletype/news/2005/01/guide_for_fighting_commen.html

I've seen all those spam guides. I need help installing plug-ins and whatnot. If anyone thinks they're up to the task, e-mail me.

What about AIR. They were quite prominent during the early stages of the party/not party last night?

the french song is called "no sleep" by canadian artist sam roberts. thank www.musicfromtheoc.com. ah synergy.

ps. koc rocks my socks off. i always thought i'd hear something like "the athlete" from erlend oye's unrest (also has french lyrics...) on the oc before i'd hear the folky stuff. but i'm still glad the culture industry's waking up to koc....

pps. confidential to topher: pokerroom.com is where its at.

I thought that Marissa reading "Please Kill Me" was more shocking than her hot cheek action.

best SHOW ALL YEAR! Saw the KOC about three weeks ago and after their amazing set that consisted of interactivity from the audience and such, they did a DJ set that got the entire place dancing. It was a KOC dance party for a good hour and a half. The best turn around and unexpected show of my existence!
