Kites Are Fun

Stereogum hearts cover songs. We found many on the blogosphere this month and some are keepers.

The Drive-By Truckers - "Like A Rolling Stone" (MP3)
From Uncut's new "Highway 61 Revisited Revisited" comp. Mojo also comes with a Dylan covers album this month, but I didn't buy that.

The Fiery Furnaces - "Norwegian Wood"
Download @ Fluxblog. Fiery fan Matthew admits "not their best work."

Bonnie Prince Billy - "Puff The Magic Dragon"
Download @ 15 Minutes To Listen. A preview of Songs For The Young At Heart, an album for indie yuppies who won't buy their children Kidz Bop. Young At Heart also features members of Lambchop, The Go Betweens, Catatonia and Belle Ampersand Sebastian!

Willie Nelson - "The Harder They Come"
Download @ Thrasher's Blog. Contrary to many of the gossip blogs, Willie Nelson is NOT having sex with Bam Margera.

Mellow - "Kites Are Fun" (MP3)
Remix of the Free Design, a band whose commercial failure was "one of the most baffling mysteries in the annals of pop music" (AMG). Much-respected 12" series now on CD.

Twin Freaks - "Long Haired Lady (Reprise)" (MP3)
From an entire Freelance Hellraiser mix of Macca reinterpretations. Half of them suck. "Maybe I'm Amazed," for example, is just like, sped up.

Holly Golightly - "Tell Me Now So I Know"
Download @ Aziz Is Bored. Kinks cover from the soundtrack to the new Bill Motherfucking Murray movie.

Nickel Creek - "Tomorrow Is A Long Time (MP3)
More Dylan, this time from cheery bluegrass Pavement fans.

Madness - "You Keep Me Hangin' On" (MP3)
Supremely unnecessary.

Tinchy Stryder & Wiley - "Uptown Girl"
Download @ ultrashare via Prancehall via catchdubs, who I know will one day deliver me a real focused mindblowing Billy Joel mashup.

Thanks blogs. And add to the list in the comments.

My elementary school music teacher constantly made us sing "Kites Are Fun". My friends and I still goof on it to this day ... although honestly, up until I saw a description of this covers album a few weeks back, I had no idea about the background of the song, I assumed it was something specifically made for educational purposes.

Wow, looking through that site, and the history of the Free Design, I realize that my elementary school music teacher (circa late 80s/early 90s) was some clued-in hipster.

Although she also made us sing "When the Volcano Blows" by Jimmy Buffett...

Does anybody have an mp3 of the cover of Depeche Mode's "Walking in My Shoes" that is on the Irish and UK charts? It is done by and Irish group called Big Generator.

Word. Covers are great.

One of the guys over at badmintonstamps.com posted an entire streaming playlist of cover songs. It has the concrete's "miss you", plus a great version of "Da Da Da"...by elestica. I love that somebody thought to cover that.

Kites Are Fun was actually covered, not just remixed, as a demo by Greg Dulli's post Afghan Whigs band The Twilight Singers. Here is the MP3...

The Free Design's first album (Kites Are Fun) is one of the best produced albums ever. Wonderful, and I am thoroughly jealous of the kid whose elementary school teacher made them listen to it. I found the first album at a yard sale (for 50 cents!) when I was 16 and obsessed over it. A rare gem...

Good lord that Drive By Truckers cover is fantastic! I love how each member gets a turn with a verse which culminates into a big drunken sing-a-long at the end. And as much as I love the Furnaces, I have to agree with Flux on that one. They had the tricky task of tackling one of the greatest pop songs ever written and doing something new with it. I don't think stripping it of it's melody and structure was the way to go. It will still stand as an interesting curio.

Another thing about the "Like A Rolling Stone" cover - I think that second verse is the first Shonna Tucker lead vocal on a DBT song. Not bad.

I wasn't expecting to like the DBT's Dylan cover (as much as I love the band), but day-ummm, that's good.

The Mojo Dylan disc is not great, except for an amazing version of Oh Sister by Andrew Bird and Nora O'Connor. Also decent versions of It Aint Me, To Ramona and If You Gotta Go...

This has to be the dregs, though...

Bam Margera is so lame, seriously when's that guy going to stop acting like a spoiled brat. I mean he's not even funny, so what's the point...

I hate when I read his name, I don't want to know his name.

Puff the Magic Dragon is probably the saddest song ever written and it's the only song that can make me cry every time I listen to it.
