Korn Responds To Fan Concert Death
The reason I haven't mentioned the fan who died in a Family Values mosh pit attack is that I don't read articles that have "Korn" in the headline. However, the band just released a statement about the tragic incident, and I thought you might be interested in reading it:
All the bands on THE FAMILY VALUES TOUR offer their sincerest condolences and prayers to the family of 30-year-old Andy Richardson. Richardson, who attended Sunday’s show at Atlanta’s Hi-Fi Buys Amphitheater, was beaten by two men at the concert and subsequently was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, August 1. The incident occurred during the Deftones set, before tour headliners KORN took the stage. KORN are appalled at the actions of these men and are imploring anyone who witnessed this senseless act or has any information about the attack to please immediately come forward by contacting local authorities.Sure, blame the Deftones.

I believe the intent in saying the Deftones were playing is to let the people at the concert know WHEN the incident took place, not to pass the buck. The more info the people have, the better chance there is of finding the scumbags who did it.

JT, there's a lot of bullshit floating out there. There was no mosh pit at this show, apparently. Read the Atlanta Journal Constitution story on the incident. This was an ampitheatre gig and this happened on the sloping lawn behind the pavilion seating. Sure, the area's GA, but I've been to plenty of shows and I've never seen a mosh pit all the way up there. Apparently a bunch of drunk assholes were taking turns tumbling down the hill and slamming into other people. That's not the pregnant woman or retarded kid's fault. That's just a bunch of negligently murdering assholes.

Hey, I was at Woodstock '99 and the Korn set ruled. But I digress...So I was over at headtochrist.com, Brian "Head" Welch's official 'I love Jesus' website, and read his rationale for quitting the band. Welch sites as one of the primary reasons for him leaving the band as being money coming more into play: the band's management wanted a more active role in making band decisions, wanted the band to make more money, and encouraged Korn to bring in co-writers on songs, all of which everyone except Welch were fine with. So that's why he left Korn. That, and the whole Jesus thing.

Okay, I wasn't at this show. But to respond to ag's point: I've not only seen mosh pits on the lawn at Hi-Fi Buys / Lakewood, I've actually participated in them. Specifically, a younger version of me ran around and slammed during the Beastie Boys set at Lolla '94. Yes, on the lawn.
While I can't say if moshing happened on the lawn at the Korn show, it's not out of the question.
And I'm old enough to remember the news about the Pantera show there where folks tried moshing up in front of the stage, and wound up actually ripping seats *off the concrete* and throwing them around.
For the record, I despise that venue, and I plan to never see a show there again. Sheds are the worst venue design of all time.

uglyredhonda: point taken. been to my fair share of metal shows at tweeter ctr in boston but i've never been to the hi-fi buys shed. i've seen rowdiness but never moshing up in the lawn but if it happens down in Atlanta, you would know better than i. the news accounts i've read still sound like this wasn't a pit but more the case of two guys acting like human bowling balls.
i still find it most interesting (and irresponsible) that "news" outlets such as MTV immediately started screaming "death in the mosh pit!" without any sort of confirmation, simply b/c it was a metal show. their follow-up stories have noticeably omitted the "mosh pit" phrase.
this sounds not like moshing gone wrong. it sounds like a plain old suckerpunch after a bunch of drunks were fucking around. could've happened anywhere -- in the parking lot, on the line for the bathroom, whereever.. the fact that the knee-jerk reaction is that "moshing kills" is what pisses me off. and i don't even mosh, nor do i like it!

velvetkevorkian, I dunno if I can speak for "H8KORN", but I personally hate Coldplay every bit as much as I do Korn. It's not about hard versus soft (which seems to be the contrast you're trying to pull). I like bands like The Boy Least Likely To and Architecture in Helsinki as much as I like bands like Big Black and The Jesus Lizard.
As for Korn being influential, I agree with the point that influence isn't always a good thing. For example, Nirvana is a perfectly good band, a great band. But they're overrated because most people talk about how they changed the landscape of Rock and Roll. However, I could name about ten shitty bands inspired by Nirvana before I could name one good band that was inspired by Nirvana. And I could name ten good bands inspired by the Pixies, not including Nirvana, before I could name one good band inspired by Nirvana.

I was at the Family Values last year and last night in the lawn area, and i can honestly say there were pits at both shows on the lawn because i was in the pits. Further more the Deftones set last year was the set in which i saw about 20 or so fights. Last night they had to tear gas the crowd in the lawn for starting fires. That being said no band is to blame for what the fans do, the action is upon those who did the crime.
