I've always wondered about the level of reality in that show. Actually, I've always wondered about the level of reality in any so-called reality show. LB explains the Journey song in the top 10, but what's with "Seasons of Love"? "Rent" the movie doesn't come out until X-Mas. Is it cool to like musicals now? 'Cause if it is, maybe I can finally sit at the cool table! I'll bring the "42nd Street" soundtrack and my tap shoes and we can all shuffle off to Buffalo. Jazz hands!

Hmm I downloaded "Don't Stop Believin'" this week, but it was because I saw it on Family Guy, definitely not any influence from Laguna Beach.

There's no way it's real. Just watch any interior scene, they have multiple cameras set up (NOT handheld) to take different angles, and the kids are perfectly framed in almost all of the shots. Not only that, but the cameras occasionally anticipate the movement of of characters way too precisely to be spontaneous.
Now compare that with, say, The Real World, where the cameras are all handheld, often miss alot of the important action, characters are constantly moving out of frame, etc. Ever wonder why the rooms in the Real World house are so big? It's so they can get multiple camera crews in the room. If they ever have to shoot at a "normal" location, say an office, there's always one camera.

And, yes... if there was a mad rush to download Journey this week, you better believe it was because of Adult Swim showing repeats of a recent Family Guy episode that featured a very funny karaoke version of the song. THANK YOU(for finally confirming my thoughts on this show) I caught some of it last summer, and was vaguely intriuged. But the more times i saw the recent rebroadcasts the more annoyed i got at myself for ever getting sucked in, cause it seemed so contrived. The montages are the WORST!
What's really funny is how half the time the songs they play(if you listen to the words) contradict whats actually happening, or supposedly happening.Case in point: at the very end of season 1 when lauren and steven "drive off into the sunset together" they play that Maroon5 song abt a girl who "always belonged to someone else" when it was her who'd been pining for him.

I just watched my first episode of the show, and it was so obviously a fake.
It had a guy named Jason surfing with another mate (actor), they get out of the surf and talks to 2 other cast members who just happen to be walking past (2 girls who invite them both to a card night) and he only sports a goatee.
Then later on the same day he sports a full beard on his way to the card night. I don't mind if stuff is fake, but why the charade. The show made a big deal in the opening credits about how it was all real.
This is probably the worst show in history - a soap opera advertised as being real, when it clearly as fake as it gets.

The funny thing is all of you are crying and most of you are wrong. Yes the people and their identities are in fact real, and no the "drama" on the show in not real. The people all live and went to school in Laguna Beach, but the places and events are all set up. The lines are not scripted(you think anyone can write that babble?). The show is basically a recreation of typical high school drama. Stephen did in fact come up to SFSU, however, nobody up here really seems to see him very much. I work right by where he lived and I did seen him and his friends come in high a couple times late at night last semester(omg stephen and drugs, scandal....). There were never any camera crews following him around waiting for something to happen. The cameras turned on when he was "acting". So seriously, if you like watching recreations of high school drama, watch it. If you think it's fake, it is, and don't watch it. For my part, once you realize it's fake, then aren't you just really watching a poorly written TV show at that point? But that's just me. Do what you want and be happy.

Read Factual literature such as Rolling Stone mag and Seventeen (if you can call that lit) featuring Kristin. It gives the downlow on Laguna Beach and some funny shit about Lindsay Lohan. It's slighlty scripted, based off real life but technically what you see is NOT REAL and NOT completley spontaneous. However I would say it's probably different than any reality show out there.

I lived with Steven's older brother in college. Last December during a graduation party at our house Journey was blared at an extremely aggressive volume, like it always should be. Steven was at this party. After the party the cd was no longer seen again. The first episode of Laguna Beach shows Steven driving back to town with Journey playing on his stereo. REAL INFO FROM SOMEONE WHO LIVES IN LAGUNA-
K so for all of you who do not live in Orange County, us who do do not call it "The OC" that's lame... and i went to lower and middle school with Casey, se is just as fake as the TV show. Kristin does not go to USC now, she goes to Loyola Marymount and Casey is at Pepperdine with her amazingly hottttt older brother. Their last name is Reinhart by the way. I've been there countless times when they have been filming and it is all scripted. The scene where they show talan and taylor at dinner before winter formal was filmed in May if that gives you an idea of how much editing goes on and the producers sat there the entire time and spoke into their ear pieces giving them lines. LC lives in the neighborhood below mine and so does Lo... right across from my best friend... I've been in a fashion show at 7 Degrees for the boutiques in our town. It's cool if you guys obsess about the show but know its like watching a show about kids in your own school... nothing is that drama filled, it IS scripted. BTW TALAN IS A BIGGER PLAYER IN REAL LIFE THAN JASON.. he has gone through like 6 of my friends within a few months, a few at the same time. Believe me, my best friend was on the Volleyball team with him and i hear alllll the stories haha have a nice day : )

Okay, so I have alot to say about all these damn comments. I am a frequent viewer of the show. I think Lauren Conrad is such a beautiful chik with a great personality. I met her once at a club in SoCal. I love the show, It's great entertainment. The cast of the show are in fact real people, but some of the dramas are a little "staged", I'm not saying that it is scripted, just a little staged. Also, my family happens to be very wealthy. I live in a 5 million dollar home in Ft. Lauderdale, and I drive a Mercedes Benz.... all only at the age of 19. I am far from spoiled! My parents started from nothing and made an incredible home, and life for my siblings and I. I have no limits on what I spend. I completely understand how alot of people can see young adults driving BMW's and Benz's and just flip out. But I know how it feels to be on both sides of the spectrum first-hand. Wealthy teens just happen to be lucky. Their lives are very different from those of lower class, or even middle class. Stop saying how "unreal" it is... it is unreal to you, but not to all. I am sick of people looking at me and other people of my status (L.B. cast) and making false judgments about our lives. I am a good person, and I go to a University so I can make a life just as good as the one I have now for my future children. People need to stop envying wealthy people and jsut get thier shit together and learn that this world is a game... whoever has the most money wins. That's just how this life works. If you don't like L.B., then don't fucking watch it. It's that simple. There is no need to put so much time into writing something negative, about something you dislike so much... Hey I am Katie and I am Stephen's(from Laguna Beach) cousin and i was viewing this site and saw you all are talking about wheter it is real or not. Well here is the answer that stephen gave to me about the show after he was done with the first season and came up to San Fransico. It is all real but not all the situations are. The show gives the kids some scence or situation if nothing is happening already because otherwise the show would be boring with no action.The camera and show crew give the kids a setting and a situation such as a party and pick who is invited and who is not (creating automatic drama) and then let the kids play it out from there. So yes most of it is real but some scenes/situations are set up to happen but played out by the kids with no acting involved.

As a resident of Orange County, I have done research on the growth of this county and yes we are priveldged in many ways and I am truly thankful for that, but the crap mtv is feeding you guys is bull****. For one Laguna is originally based on its large artistic community. It is not about surfing or anything like that, although those are bonuses. The homes were way cheaper about less than a decade ago compared to how much they are worth now so don't think that the parents of the kids on that show spent millions of bucks on those houses b/c that's a lie. This is funny. When I was staying with a friend in the US we were pulled in off the street and paid a few hundred bucks to fill a club that was being filmed in for this show. In addition to what I have been told is a standard model release form we had to sign non-disclosure forms (I don't care much for contracts). I never realised at the time that what was being filmed was intended to be passed of as reality because of how it was being filmed. From what I could tell the scene was structured improvisation not strictly scripted. A key topic had to be covered and there was a person called an on site story co-ordinator who worked with a director in deciding at the time whether a take worked and ensured that certain lines were included. This particular conversation was filmed around 30 times from 3 different angles. They called them set-ups or something like that. The other reason it never occurred to me that it wasn't fiction was that the two characters - a couple I think having a mild argument - were totally fine with each other between takes. I think she was meant to be annoyed that a couple of other girls were talking to her guy but she seemed fine with them during a half break.
I'd be well interested in watching that scene.

The show is pretty good, but everything is so planned out, you know? Reality TV? Don't think so. LC is just amazing, though.
