Lavender Diamond Cover Madonna

We've been enjoying Through the Wilderness: A Tribute to Madonna (well, half of it), and Lavender Diamond's faithful take on "Like A Prayer" is one of the more intriguing moments. You don't get much of the soulfulness of Madonna's (can't really imagine that gospel choir clapping along or speaking in tongues), but you do get an icily reverent, piano-doused hymn, with lots of reverb. You can hear the song streaming over at MySpace (via Pitchfork Media).

The comp, which benefits Raising Malawi, also features the Chapin Sisters, Golden Animals, Alexandra Hope, and these folks:

Giant Drag - "Oh Father" (MP3)
Ariel Pink - "Everybody" (MP3)

Through the Wilderness: A Tribute to Madonna is out 11/27 on Manimal Vinyl.

Could the backing sound any cheaper? Her voice has zero personality too. Dreadful stuff.

i hope these commenters are 15 years old, cause that's the only way to justify these "i hate her face" comments.

I could care less about her face. I saw them open for the New Pornographers at the Crystal Ballroom, and I thought I had mistakenly stepped into a talent show for 8-year-olds. It was awful. Between irritatingly indistinguishable songs, the singer (who was wearing a princess dress straight out of a Disney catalog) rambled on and on for minutes at a time, only she was either talking so quietly or mixed so poorly that only people directly in front of the stage could hear her. It was, bar none, the WORST opening act I have ever seen.

It was so awful I wanted to punch myself in the face.

That cover of "Oh Father" is really, really, heinous. How could you ruin one of Madonna's best songs? Ariel's cover is fantastic.

Somebody needs to take that girl's guitar out of her hands and smash it. It's for her own good.

In what sense does a bad cover version of a good song cause the original to be "ruined"? Was the listening experience so traumatic that you can no longer even enjoy listening to the original? If so, I think they make medication for that.

What I don't get about the Lavender Diamond cover is why she tried to duplicate the gospel choir run at the end. Sure, it's the best part of the original -- but all I could think hearing LD's version was "gee, I wish this was an actual gospel choir".

Anyway, I like the Giant Drag version of Oh Father. Not as good as her God Only Knows cover, though/
