Let's Make Love And Poop And Fart

NME, who has yet to sell us on this New Rave thing, takes a breather from the Shitdisco coverage to investigate the next big thing: Brazilian music! They've asked the 10th coolest person in music, CSS's Lovefoxx, to deliver "The Buzz"...

"My favorite Brazilian band are called Bonde Do Role who make cool-ass baile funk with Portuguese lyrics that are so fucked up. It's funny to listen to them because it's all about poop and fart and, then, sex with poop and fart. Or a bit of violence with poop and fart. ... They make really exciting and fresh music. Who else do I like? Well, Tetine are a duo who live in London ... Their lyrics are crazy, but not in a poop and fart way."
That's quite an endorsement. She should write for Pitchfork! Or The Sarah Silverman Program. Incidentally, Gawker says Sarah Silverman's not funny. We're gonna ride their coattails page views by allowing you guys an unmoderated rebuttal...

i think SS's show is totally funny in that "it's so stupid it's funny" way. plus she is hot, so that could also be coloring my feelings on the matter as well.

Who started this rumor that Sarah Silverman is hot? Or funny?

The premiere was underwhelming. And she'd be better if she gave up the songs. But she's still hilarious.

Um Yeah. Sarah Silverman is definitely the hottest jewish celebrity right under Natalie Portman. And i think she is funny. Sort of like how jt put it. But nonetheless still funny.

She's mousey lookin but I find her very cute. It's unfortunate her crude humor belies her looks. Cute but not funny.

Its a very basic form of humor which would appeal to simpletons and people who watched "Friends" which I guess are one in the same.

Hell, I'm not gonna front...I thought the show was hilarious. And maybe I wanted it to be great because she's totally hittable, but I did quite enjoy it. Check it out if you haven't already.

PS: that "cool list" is obviously ridiculous.

All I need say about people who don't find Sarah Silverman funny is that they are either too stupid to get it or simply lack a sense of humour at all.

If Sarah Silverman was a male comic, people would think it was funny. But rude jokes coming from a woman are considered especially distasteful...and I suspect she considers her material to be an affront to that notion. At any rate, she's a helluva lot funnier than Dane Cook.

Silverman is so fucking one-note. She's funny in the Aristocrats, and the first half of Jesus Is Magic is passable. But she's such a one-trick-pony. A serial television show is the absolute worst vehicle for her.

the premiere was kind of underwhelming. but i'll tune in again to see if it picks up because i do like her shtick (and let's face it, she's hot.)

and to those who want to deride others for liking certain comedians they don't - get off your fucking high horses. it's comedy. laugh, or go away.

if anything, the main criticism that silverman should recieve is that she is rather lax on the new material front.

Christ, her show is fucking TERRIBLE! I don't see how anyone can defend thirty minutes of baby talk and stupid songs. Except when it's done by the people behind Wonder Showzen.

But SS was done when she did that awful fart/asshole singing thing for five minutes on that Comedy Central benefit a few years back.

This discussion thread serves as an excellent illustration of why hipsters are boring and useless.

You see, the first rule of hipsterism is that a hipster is only permitted to like things that nobody (other than other hipsters) already like. This, in and of itself, wreaks havoc on the hipster's ability to actually ENJOY popular culture. However, it gets worse. The second rule of hipsterism is that a hipster is not permitted to like things that other hipsters already like. When you combine these rules and inflict them on an army of embittered record store clerks and coffee shop employees -- and then unleash the whole lot of them on the internet -- what do you get?

Well, you get a discussion thread precisely like this. Hilariously vitriolic backbiting against a comedian who is doing genuinely hip comedy for a mass audience. BTW, it's the mass audience thing that REALLY gets up the hipsters' ire. Because -- just as in music -- comedians must languish in obscurity to keep the sorta street cred that will draw praise from petulant, snotty hipsters.

Joey Headset, you're an idiot. You assume that "hipsters" only like things that no one else likes merely because of the fact. That they cannot enjoy popular culture because of this? Or could it possibly be that popular culture is watered down and irrelevant? And then to overgeneralize that every person who enjoys independent media is the same so any form of dissent amongst them must be a front to keep their hipster status, what a weak argument. Bottom line, this show is average compared to some of her past stand up, but I also wouldn't venture to say that it's going to be at all palatable for mainstream culture. She has a fairly esoteric brand of comedy ala stella.. or dog bites man. The fringe/intelligent audience seems to be too much of a minority to keep ratings up and sustain a show on cable.

haters go home.

i think the show is funny. i just don't get why people need to constantly bash what other people like - whether it's music, comedy, film, or anything else. and it's fine to state your opinion, just recognize that it is opinion and seperate it from the factual sentences that appear on every opinion-based thread. and no matter what you think, or how juvenile she is... look where she is, and then look where you are.

i tried really hard to like her. i saw some bits of her stand-up and thought they were really funny: i.e. "i was licking my boyfriend's penis the other day and i thought to myself, oh my god, i am becoming my mother!"

that is funny - so i rented Jesus Is Magic and I couldn't watch the whole thing - after a few minutes, it went from kind of funny to kind of mean to just boring.

which was really disappointing because i wanted her to be funny. now, she reminds more of that awful lisa lampenelli who thinks that "black" and "spic" jokes are the only thing that matters in comedy. i like boundary pushing humour but i guess i just like people being funny (see mitch hedberg, mike birbiglia, natashi legerro, eugene mirman, nick kroll and john mulaney - pretty much all the rififi and ucb troupes.)

oh, i also don't think demetri martin is very funny. sometimes he is, but usually i think he is sort of the indie dane cook - kind of cute and sometimes funny.

I think Sarah Silverman is funny enough. And I thought "Dog Bites Man" was only funny when A.D. Miles and Zach Galifianakis got to shine--they're both very talented. BUT both of these are mere treacle comapared to the genius of "Stella"--I watched the DVDs again last night and was enraptured by the comedic perfection. Comedy Central should cancel their entire primetime lineup (up to Daily Show) and just play those 10 episodes on a loop, with sporadic showings of "Wet Hot American Summer" to break things up.

Doing a bit about getting raped by Joe Franklin is about as unfunny as you can be. Silverman is NOT hot and NOT funny, though she is stoned about 22 hours a day. If you want a dirty-mouthed woman comic who is actually funny, seek out Lisa Lampanelli. Not SHE is a riot.

Joey, not bad. But you forgot to point out that when hipsters DO like mainstream shit (oh, and they do, because only about 1 in 20 is really that smart or clever) they have to do so in a purely ironic, smirking way so as to protect their cred.

God, it must suck being a hipster. You live a shit phony existence in a shitty flat in Brooklyn 51 weeks out of the year scraping a shit living in the city just so you can go home to [insert your cowtown/suburb here] at Christmas and front like you're all cool and bad-ass to your old high school friends, who still remember that you were never that cool. Is it really all worth it, sad hispter? Is it?
