Little Miss Sufjan
The trailer for Little Miss Sunshine, starring Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, and Toni Collette, has some nice Flaming Lips and Sufjan Stevens tunes. (We're told Toni is a big Sufjan fan.) Watch here. The film (out 7/26) was directed by husband-and-wife Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who ruled MTV in the '90s with music videos for The Smashing Pumpkins, RHCP, Weezer, and R.E.M. (They also directed some episodes of Mr. Show.)
DeVotchKa composed the score for Sunshine. You can listen to the band's "The Winner Is" (and Suf's "No Man's Land," from the soundtrack/Avalanche) here.
Speaking of Mr. Stevens, Scritti Politti's Green Gartside tells Digital Spy who we should be listening to at the moment. (Via Largehearted Boy):
"Sufjan Stevens - and he's just astonishing. He's like some mad gay Christian American singer-songwriter who just writes the most amazing stuff."Wait, Sufjan's gay? I'm so confused.

i don't care what his religion says

carefully read the lyrics to casmir pulaski day.
i don't care if it says "blouse" or not - gay. and it is a beautiful song, i am just saying - the writing is on the wall folks.

I probably wouldnt have cared to see Little Miss Sunshine if it werent for the kickass soundtrack. It's about time someone used 'Chicago' for a movie, anyways. It was just a matter of time.

I heard Sufjan and Matt Drudge are a couple.

Anyone remember in the early days of Belle and Sebastian when almost everyone was 100% sure that Stuart Murdoch was gay? And now he's not only shown that he's clearly hetero, but he's kind of a lech. And I love him for it.
Gay or straight, Sufjan's got fantastic taste in women.

No shit, DeVotchka? That's almost the real news to me (you'll get a hundred more hits if it says Sufjan, won't you?) as opposed to the ongoing "is Sufjan gay" debate. Does it matter....? By the way? Isn't he fucking incredible anyway?

I remember reading somewhere that Suf is Episcopalian. Gay bishops... gay parishioners... Just saying...

under-rated? under-appreciated? under-promoted? Don't know what the under on this one is, but clicked on the link to find out that nearly the whole soundtrack is Devotchka, yet half yer post and headline are about SS. Saw the band at a sold out TT's in Boston two weeks ago, and anyone who's seen devotchka knows where the real story is here. Maybe Little Miss Devotchka doesn't have the same ring, but that's clearly what it is.

Fuck Sufjan. Go see Ben Chasny tonight - he makes Suffie seem like a little choir boy. Our postaltneofolk gods manifest in Six Organs of Admittance. The sun awakens in the school of the flower...

I dont' understand why people would think Sufjan Stevens is gay. I don't say that but for the lack of literally any evidence pointing one way or another on his sexuality. Lyrics, especially ones so narrative like his, mean almost nothing. In Chicago, he talks about "selling [his] clothes to the state," but nobody seriously believes Sufjan Stevens entered any sort of business deal with the Illinois government regarding his wardrobe.
To wind up this rambling post, given the lack of evidence pointing to homosexuality, to assert it would be completely illogical in a country where over 90% of the population is heterosexual.

In the song "To Be Alone With You" it says
"You gave your body to the lonely
They took your clothes
You gave up a wife and a family
You gave your ghosts"
then at the end of the song it's
"To be alone with me you went upon a tree
I've never known a man who loved me..."
I believe that means he's gay because there are a lot of undertone's in almost all of his songs.
Score = 0
that's about jesus, the whole album is about jesus, the lyrics about going up on a tree are about the cross and crucifixion.
but then he's a poor, effeminate, misunderstood boy, www.sufjan.com/michigan-its hard to decipher which stories on here are real and which aren't.
let a man have his mystery.

I don't think Sufjan is gay, and I don't think you can base this assumption on his lyrics. "To Be Alone With You" is about Jesus, and in "The Upper Peninsula" he talks about his wife at a K-Mart. Also, why does "Casimir Pulaski Day" automatically make him gay? Men's shirts aren't called "blouses." Is Sufjan with Rosie Thomas? Where did someone hear he was with Matt Drudge? Has anyone ever met Sufjan? I love that man.
Score = 0
well to be alone with you is about the man who was lowered on a matt into the building for jesus to heal him its about the story because the guys friend ran up a tree to see jesus inside the house well anyways only reason why i feel as if he has the slightest chance of being gay is because of the song The Predatory Wasp Of The Palisades Is Out To Get Us! it just seems gay the lyrics really point to it i dont know what it is but i wouldnt put it passed sufjan of him being gay

Just curious as to how A review for a movie and great musical artists turns to personal comments about ones sexuality. Do we really care and why Is no one supporting the greatness of the movie and the bands who scored the movie? Just wondering..Been a Huge/ obsessed fan of devotchkas for years now, And I was In heaven to find they scored this movie..Not to mention the other artists seem to be very good as well. And there is my two cents..or was it three?

first off i love his music and second it really doesnt matter if he gay or not but just to clarify:
the predatory wasp of the palisades is out to get us-
"Oh how I meant to tease him
Oh how I meant no harm
Touching his back with my hand I kiss him
I see the wasp on the length of my arm"

"gay-dar explosion..." hehe im gonna LOL that one

i think that devotchka deserves a little round of applause considering they did the majoritey of the soundtrack. Let's Go... maybe its just because i play the accordian... but it's freaking amazing.

Could the silk stockings line be a reference to Kate Chopin's story "A Pair of Silk Stockings?"

Here is an ongoing debate on the subject. It seems like we all want to know...

I think he is gay.. in the lyrics of "Chicago" at the end he says "if i was crying in the van with my friend.. it was for freedom..." I think he was talking about crying for the freedom to be openly gay. We have freedom, but gays are still supressed, and I think he wants freedom from that, the restraints.
Score = 0
Next lines in chicago: "From myself and from this land"...that part of the song says nothing of his sexual orientation. The song's all about a sense of restlessness in a big and sometimes oppressive city. He wants freedom from the chaos that is the physical realm.
Score = 0
How can anyone guess sexuality from song lyrics? Is Prince gay? Tolkien's stories included a lot on male companionship, was he gay? Our society is too concerned to labeling sexuality as a pure duality. Like most people, Sufjan has probably thought about it, but does that define who he?
Score = 0
I really do think Suf is gay, but he doesn't want to admit it openly (yet), as he doesn't wish to potentially alienate backward conservative 'Christian' types, many of whom would form a large part of his folksy music style.
The lyrics at the end of Chicago, as someone previously mentioned, do point to him looking for freedom to be openly gay and feel ok inside about it. It's society's fault that any gay person should even, for a second, feel bad about being gay. It's totally ok and life is so short, it's a pity people waste it.
The US is still soooooo conservative; of course gays should be allowed marry and adopt children. People are soooo old-fashioned. Cop on!
