Live From New York: Courtney Love's St. Patrick's Day

I poke a lot of fun at Courtney Love on this blog. 'Cause she's ... a little loopy. But she totally won me over last night, despite her guitar-throwing tantrums. She's a ROCK STAR. I can't get enough.

CLICK PHOTOS TO ENLARGE

11:07 PM
James and I head to Plaid after seeing a so-so set by Headset at Mercury. I've never been to Plaid. There are scantily-clad ladies dancing on the bar.

Meet up with Jason Productshop, who is looking very dapper (check out his awesome review of the show).

11:18 PM
Opening band ... a little screamy, but I liked their energy. Anyone know their name? Was it Uncle Fucker?

11:56 PM
The Courtney Love Band chills in the VIP area.

12:05 AM
Peeps watching at home see Courtney pull a Drew Barrymore and expose her breasts on The Late Show. SIX TIMES. She sings "Danny Boy" and gives Mr. Letterman some choice bytes:

  • ON FLIRTING: "I learned how to flirt by watching you!"
  • ON BEING WEIRD: "Am I being weird ... like Jennifer Tilly?"
  • ON THE FCC CRACKDOWN: "Is this like Reagan trickle-down economics? Is this like Bush trickle down?"
  • ON TROUBLE: "Yeah ... but I'm sexy!" (after Letterman asks, "You have a lot of trouble, don't you?")
  • ON CRUSHING: "I've had a crush on you my whole life."
  • ON BEING WEIRD: "Do you think I'm like wacky and stuff? ... Is that against the law?"
  • ON THE DRUG CHARGES: "[It was] one expired Percocet and one Ambien."

    12:10 AM
Natasha Lyonne's girlfriend to Stereogum: "We're being really cool by letting you sit here, so like, don't take any pictures."

    12:52 AM
    Stereogum: "You're awesome!"
    Boy George: "Fuck off."

    12:55 AM
    Find Hal and Vivian

Hal takes a picture of our feet. He was either being artistic or drunk.

    1:14 AM
Courtney rocks! She screams to Natasha from the stage: "Pass me my fucking scotch ... bitch!"

Courtney throws the microphone stand. Hits some poor guy in the head! But he's not (badly) hurt.

    2:10 AM
Time to go! James notices three police officers making their way inside with flash lights and a determined look on their faces, while a patrol car idles outside.

    2:30 AM
Courtney gets arrested for reckless endangerment and third-degree assault. Man, this girl CANNOT GET A BREAK. Where's the love NYC? Julian was right about the cops.

Courtney's performing tonight at Bowery! Anyone going? I want a report!

    UPDATE:

  • Great show photos at Eva Chavela.
  • More detailed Letterman buzz at Whatevs.
  • After-party photos (!) via Jen Gothamist.

I'm so glad the cops took her away. Assaulting a person in the audience (even if it wasn't intentional) is so incredibly stupid. A performer should know better. Yeah, but look who we're talking about. NYC cops might not be too smart, but they've got 100x the common sense of C. Love. Anyway, she'll get her day in court...if she bothers to show up.

Courtney Love needs a serious rehabilitation from drugs, alcohol and mixed up soul searching, to get back to basics of a clean, simple life to where she can find her true self. You would think that she would even be more careful when so much is at stake, when Francis Bean has had to grow up without the love of her dad... but still she cannot swallow what ails her and just be a good little soldier. she's also collaberated on this record with Wayne Kramer of the MC-5.

    some facts about Courtney:

Her parents gave her acid when she was four

Then they abandoned her in LA with a friend and moved to New Zealand when she was eight

She was in and out of trouble with the law and stayed in juvenille halls through her adolescence

She made a living stripping in Tawain in her teens

the love of her life committed suicide.

Not a pretty background, eh?  She didn't come from a model-agency owning magnate's family from Darien, Connecticut.

I think Courtney's done pretty well for herself considering.  No wonder she has troubles.  And we are all so quick to judge, but she could be the best mother in the world.  Maybe she's just having fun on her tour - she could go home and be Sarah Lee for all we know.

Look at Anna Nicole Smith - she does drugs, has a son, is totally dysfunctional and what does the media/entertainment industry do?  They give her a TV show!
Courtney just can't get a break...

To me, Courtney has decended from a long line of punk rocker chicks who TRULY lived the life (not just dressed up in the clothes like Avril Lavigne) strong transgressive-minded women like Exene Cervenka, Patti Smith, Lydia Lunch, Siouxie Sioux, Joan Jett, The Lunachicks, and all of those riot grrls who broke down the barriers of the male-saturated punk rock world.

Talent will always be subjective.  But no one can deny that she's an icon in her own right, even if she's a dysfunctional one.  Everyone always says that she glommed onto Kurt Cobain as if he was some swamped brained idiot that would actually be taken advantage of.  I never knew Kurt personally, but something tells me that he was a bright, articulate individual with somewhat of a savvy business sense to become a millionaire by his late twenties.  But I guess it's so inconceivable that he would actually fall in love with someone who wasn't a model or actress.  Is it that inconceivable?  Maybe in today's rock climate with Jack White dating Renee Zellweger it is.

And yeah, i am well aware of her background and the shards of glass that she has had to crawl over thoughout her life. I think Kurt and Love were destined to be together, I think they understood each other because they both had similar holes in their hearts to fill. It is funny because she saved his life on many occasions and yet, i always think of them together as being gas and fire together (in a tragic sort of way). So often, hurt birds flock together.

Society likes peering at dysfunction because it makes us all feel better about ourselves. But all this voyeurism has a price... You mentioned Anna Nicole Smith, I laugh at her too but also realize that she is morally bankrupt having taken millions of dollars from some feeble lonely old man, and yet SHE is celebrated and marketed to a whole new MTV generation.

Maybe CLove is a punker who will never mature, (although i do think she is albeit slowly) and she has had a tough upbringing but at some point you just have to not rely on that upbringing for excuses. BUT that early love you feel before you are 4 years old is soooo important... given that, you can endure anything really and so, i give anyone slack who didn't get those hugs. (but then i am just a softy)

Maybe Kathleen Hannah is where your knowledge of female punk starts but it's not where mine does... and why does punk have to be about a "cause?" Can't it be music and attitude? For lots of bands in the late '70s/early '80s that's all it was. Reading what Iggy said in the Oral History of Punk Rock by Legs McNeil, gave me the impression that all he wanted to do was get laid.

That's the beauty of punk - it defies categorization.

And thank you Ellogoods. Your posts were just as eloquently stated. Almost enough that you had me swayed there for a bit. The crowd was really loopy - some psycho girl with cat ears was going around biting people - i saw her make blood on one girl's arm. I wish she would have tried to bite me; i would have shoved those silly cat ears down her throat. Steve Van Zandt was there, and i heard Debbie Harry and Joan Jett were there, too, although i didn't see them myself.

She's so obviously insane, it's a wonder that the rubber truck hasn't rounded her up yet. She's not like you, not one bit. She is an island - truly alone. And you're kidding about Anna Nicole Smith, right? Last time I checked Courtney has exactly what she wants. A record contract and a marginal career. Her life-model is Nancy Spungeon and Courtney has exceeded the "fame" that Nancy had in her day.

We also all know about her childhood and hard life. The truth is there are tons of people out there who have gone through similar/worse experiences who have not turned into selfish/self-destructive piles of human shit like Courtney. And while some people pleading "If someone would JUST help her..." the reality is you want defend her as a human fuck-up and apologize it away. And if by some miracle she ever cleaned up her act, you'd have no clue how to react to her.

The amazing thing about Courtney Love and other celebrties is how many dumbass people will bend over backwards to defend their behavior. Reality check here: Courtney could not give a rat's ass about anyone but Courtney. You think for one second if you were fucked up she'd come and help? Hell no. She's a fucked up celebrity and an asshole. She's not your friend. She doesn't care about you or anyone else. And only cares about feeding her ego.

If you're going to say something that asinine then anyone else can say that Courtney Love's bad childhood had nothing to do with her parents, but she's the natural product of Nixon, Watergate and social unrest in the 1970s.

She may as well, because if she has taken away Francis Bean's childhood or part thereof, it has already happened anyway. From everything I have seen i the news, Bean has grown up to be a great little kid and probably that has a lot to do with her internally rebeling against her mom's "don't give a shit" attitude, but I also have the feeling that Francis has had to become the mom in that relationship more than once and I have known people who were ostensibly the parent to their parents their whole life AND it is sad. Sad to have to grow up fast, watch your parent mess up time and time again and have to wake them up or watch them face down on the bed when someone else takes you to horse riding lessons... things like that are remembered AND yes, many other kids have way worse lives but don't you just hate when you are making a valid point and someone else chimes in "Well, some kids get murdered by their parent!"

On a side issure discussed on here. Punk definitely has their own brand of Punk snobbery but in truth Punk has never been political, music really has never been political except for the genre of protest songs in all types of musis. Punk, in my way of thinking, has always been an outlet for abandon and anger and raw sexuality. To make a crude analogy, if "rock and roll" stemmed out of the term rocking and rolling as in fucking, then "punk" is akin to fucking a complete and utter stranger in a back ally. It is primitive, spontaneous, daring and kind of stupid, or at least that is what punk used to be.

The music called punk now, which i refer to as baby punk is played by bands like (god strike me down for mentioning them) Good Charlotte is like corporate punk or Disney Punk. I think Punk rock died years ago and I think that is probably a good thing....

I think Courtney Love was punk back when she was in Sugar Baby Doll with Kat Bjelland and subsequently with early Hole but she has metamophasized into more sophisticated music, with more melody. Is that a good thing? I dunno but I just do not think that true punkers get the extensive cosmetic surgery that she has had... that is not punk- nooooo, you cannot make me say it is.

Unfortunately, this whole dialogue is as mixed up and confused and complicated as CL herself.

I definitely agree with many of the previous points that were made, but definitely have some beef with a few comments:

*CL IS a rock 'n' roll trainwreck. No one can deny that. She's living up to those jaded old rock 'n' roll ideals-- live fast, die young, and leave a pretty corpse.

    * She's milking all of this free publicity for all it's worth. Never forget that CL is a master of self-promotion.

As a longtime music journalist and PR person (I'm assuming that I'm a bit older than most posting here; I'm 32), most of us look at CL with wonder and awe... with her assorted antics, she provides herself with millions of dollars of free publicity by exploiting herself and the ones she loves. And she knows it.

We all know that America's Sweetheart was on the way to becoming a huge flop. I wouldn't even doubt it if she's had this plan in mind from the start of her press campaign. Disgrace oneself in order to move units.

    * The ultimate loser in this whole thing is Frances Bean. She's losing the oppportunity to have a strong, independent female figure in her life, and I agree with the other poster that commented that it seems as if FB has had to be the adult in this relationship. I've met FB once, at the Pearl Harbor premiere in Hawaii, and she seems very grounded and self-assured (very guarded, however. Maybe that's a rebellion against the CL bluntness). But it still must hurt to see your mom on TV flashing a man 6 TIMES and obviously messed up out of her head. And that Wendy's bum/boob picture must not help, either. FB is the one I'm rooting for... I hope Kurt's mom (her grandma) is taking good care of her.

*CL is a controlling, selfish sociopath. No doubts about that either. She's definitely hurting her child. She's uber-careful about how she's represented in the Kurt/Nirvana era (which a lot of it is WAY negative)... I mean, she had all instances of herself removed from Kurt's diaries when they were released! She held up the Nirvana box set, when 2 of the surviving members (who have more rights to control their artwork than she does) wanted to work with her in a civilized manner in order to put it out.

I'll admit, a few things about CL are cool-- Live Through This was one of my favorite albums for a long, long time. The songs and lyrics made me proud to be a CL fan. She defined a new level of strength behind being a woman that's also a hard rock fan. She also is very smart... no one can argue this. I've heard her debate politics, literature, music history and random issues of social debate with aplomb.

But she started losing me after the plastic surgery and the Versace ad campaigns. It seems as if she took a lot of her lyrics to heart ("oh make me over..."). If she really was so self-confident and in control AND PUNK ROCK (as some of you here love to throw around... trust me, it's easy to study and observe "punk," but living its ideals is QUITE another thing... debate that one!), why hack yourself up to fit someone else's ideals of beauty?? She was already rich. She was already famous.
She was already challenging the ideas of women in rock (btw, I think PJ Harvey does it WAY better, and you never hear about her letting bums suck on her tits outside of fast food shops...).

There's a lot of deeper issues there. And the drugs ain't helping. I refuse to give her a free pass just because she's a woman in rock. Fuck that. If she was really punk rock, she'd kick the prescription pills and get her shit together, get her voice back (which won't happen, sorry-- a friend mastered the Celebrity Skin album, and her voice was shot then... they had to digitally fuzz everthing over so it sounded somewhat together), work on having a better relationship with her daughter, and then come back with an album of decent materials. Then get on Letterman and rail about how fucked up the media industry is and how in the drive for fame money and artistic recognition, it makes women go crazy. Then flash him once.

Overall, it just seems to me as if she's going to have to hit rock rock bottom in order to get some help. And hopefully it doesn't mean jail time, or even worse, losing custody of her child.
    Or worse.

But I just ask her to do it on her own time. I'm sick of watching the trainwreck.

Courtney's already lost custody of FB, or at least is in the process of losing it. Kurt's mother has custody of Frances or is getting it or maybe Frances is already living with her.

Whoever compared Courtney to Patti Smith must not know that Patti moved away from NYC to raise a family and when her husband Fred 'Sonic' Smith fell ill, cared for him until his death. Patti didn't drive her husband to commit suicide and, as far as I know, didn't get him hooked on heroin.

The plastic surgery thing is really scary, cause we know that Courtney has a serious self-hatred issue and is trying to erase all of her father from her face, but it's so damned disappointing that she ends up looking like meg ryan or any other 40something desperate hollywood actress instead of Debbie Harry who probably has had some work done, but in a subtle classy way. Ok, not a fair comparison, Debbie's oneof the most beautiful women in the world.
The plastic surgery obsession vs. real punk rock is one of those wild contradictions Courtney has always thrown out there and somehow managed to get away with.
Yeah, work with Diane Warren with Linda Perry and still persuade clueless media that you're punk rock.
The music isn't punk, but the pathetic public display is sort of punk. Punk in that unembarass-able make an ass of yourself with style sid vicious way. It's only punk because most so-called celebrities are so careful about their image and don't dare mix with mortals if they're too fucked up.
But for a 39 yo woman it's a lot more punk rock to NOT flash your breasts. Then again, she's more or less saying, 'these aren't real so why not show the whole damn world, it's not as if they're sexual by any stretch of imagination.'
i don't think Courtney's going to off herself with drugs for at least another 10 years and by then, no one will even notice.

God. If Courtney hated the way she looked so much, what does she think of Frances when she looks at the kid and sees her own face staring back at her?
