Lollapalooza 2009 Lineup: Now With 100% More Animal Collective

thumbnail icon: Lollapalooza 2009 Lineup: Now With 100% More Animal Collective

It seems like Coachella was only yesterday. Since this year's Lolla headliners (and then some) leaked long ago, we already knew about Beastie Boys, Depeche Mode, Jane's Addiction, Tool, Kings Of Leon, the Killers, Lou Reed, Decemberists, Neko Case, and Andrew Bird. Not too shabby. But almost too shabby. If that assortment of talent didn't convince you to attend, maybe this will: Animal Collective, Fleet Foxes, Deerhunter, Bat For Lashes, TV On The Radio, and Vampire Weekend. And an Animal Collective DJ set. Here's the whole lineup, in poster and video form because festival reveals come with videos these days.

Chicago's Grant Park 8/7-8/9. Tickets available now at lollapalooza.com.

Indeed. The line-ups have been looking very similar these days Looks like Coachella and All Points West combined together.

Why on earth does RS get a -8 for this comment?! If you read this site, you must realize every one of these headliners past their heyday decades ago! Did the people that gave this comment a "thumbs-down", go to jonasbrothers.com after they left this site? That's the only rationale explanation...

the headliners at lolla are always big names and middle-aged people favorites because THOSE are the people that will buy tickets. for the good stuff, you've gotta look at the other bands. put ya glasses on and read the small print., THEN tell me that the lineup sucks.

I'll save $120 and go to Pitchfork instead. Better setup, and already a better lineup this year.

Festival line-ups all look similar because those are the bands on tour. So what are your other choices: Bonnaroo's lineup is better but you have to slog through mud and hippies and a flight to Cali and a drive to the middle of the desert would break the bank. Lolla's lineup in pretty solid, minus the over-the-hill act.

I'm hoping some of these bands somehow work around any exclusivity agreements and play local sets, like Broken Social Scene did last year. Looking at that list, there are only a couple "must sees", but I'm not sure I'd want to see them in a festival setting. I'd rather wait for a band like the Builders and the Butchers to come back and play Schubas or something.

The headliners are nowhere close to last year (Radiohead/Take Care Of Yourself Against The Machine/Kanye), but shit, LOU MOTHERFUCKING REED is playing! He's one of the 5 best artists of the last 50 years!!! Plus AC, Fleet Foxes, TVOTR, Bon Iver, Vampire Weekend, Decemberists, Arctic Monkeys, Cold War Kids, Silversun Pickups, Band of Horses, Santigold, Heartless Bastards, Gaslight Anthem, Neko Case, STS9, Los Campesinos! and Atmosphere? my issue isn't specifically the "40-something scene," it's that these festivals cater to an older crowd's vain nostalgia, and by doing so marginalize many of the totally fucking brilliant acts around right now, there is no fucking reason why tv on the radio shouldn't be a headliner, how many album of the year nods do you have to get? depeche mode, jane's addiction, and even lou reed (among others) can all suck my dick... and the killers thing... i just don't understand that... maybe i'm just jaded...

Lou Reed doesn't cater to 40y olds, he caters to true music lovers of all genres.

the guy above you is 36 and pretty excited about fleet foxes... just saying

alright, well, the issue here isn't exactly the argument, i agree with chris to some degree about old acts, not necessarily old crowds but old acts, more often than not there comes a time when a band ceases to be relevant, at least on stage, or more readily ceases to be good on stage, the whole 'fade away' thing comes to mind, an example is the jesus and mary chain's set at coachella a few years back, and there are plenty others, on one hand those bands deserve the respect and recognition to play a main stage early evening - , but on the other they also take the place of acts around right now who have yet to have that main stage opportunity and who, by most accounts, deserve it, maybe bands like tvotr, animal collective, or fleet foxes just need a few more years to hit that point but the argument is there nonetheless...

the issue here, however, is that you just can't tell lou reed to suck your dick on sites like these, or most anywhere, and not expect bricks coming through your windows (figuratively)

Lollapalooza has always been a mix-mash of an array of music. (Maybe Perry uses a hat and pulls out names) But in any case, he tries to please everyone's musical needs so he could sell tickets. It seems that every year they talk about ticket sales are down, and they're going to cancel, but then WALLA, Depeche Mode is now headlining! But ever since the first Lollapalooza, it was always diverse. They had NIN and Ice T for crying outloud! And one year, it was opened up by a buch of chanting Tibetan monks! But I digress. I want to go!

When did the under 30 crowd become so pathetic? When did you stop appreciating the musical roots of the bands you like so much? Where is the respect you whiny little maggots? I'm 34 and am looking forward to ALL the good music at Lolla. There is not a band around in this scene that hasn't been influenced and shaped by bands like Depeche Mode, Lou Reed, the Cure, David Bowie, Tool, and the list goes on. Why are bands like Depeche Mode on the main stage? BECAUSE THEY HAVE EARNED IT! They have been churning out fantastic, influential and yes, still relevant music for over 25 years and they can still fill stadiums that all your little bands would kill to play. And as they should, when did success become a crime? Depeche Mode has never sold their sound out to please the masses, the masses came to their sound as they will on closing night of Lolla. You have no sense of respect or history. The bands you love would spit on you if they heard you talking about Lou Reed and Depeche Mode like this. You don't have to like them but Jesus Christ shut up and stop whining and have some respect. Give it time, your bands, if they have saying power will get to the big stages in time, when they have paid their dues. This "I want everything my way and I want it right now" generation of losers really makes me sad for the future of music. Have patience, and instead of knocking down these bands that have been around so long, maybe take the time to LISTEN to them and see what it is about them that has influenced your generation of music so deeply, and why after all these years, they are still bringing in the masses to see them live.

Amen Aj! There is a reason that bands like Depeche mode, Tool, and Lou Reed have been around so long. They have stayed true to their art form while still bringing in masses of people to see them live. I've seen Depeche Mode twice now and I can tell you that they are STILL one of the best live acts around. A lot of the bands people are talking about on here are good such as Animal Collective, and I look forward to seeing them live as well. But no way in Hell that they should step in front of bands like Tool, Janes or Depeche Mode for a closing spot. It's about respect, patience and paying your dues. I love these bands because they influenced my generation of music now. Just like for my dad, bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Queen and David Bowie influenced HIS generation of music. And even those bands, I would line up to see Sabbath or Bowie, or the Rolling Stones or Dylan or whoever. It's music guys, not a whining contest! There is a reason these bands STILL play to sold out crowds! If you wanna live in your little pathetic emo driven worlds where it's cool to think everything sucks and anyone over 25 is old and lame then you are going to miss out on A LOT of amazing art, music and culture. So next time you want to tell Lou Reed to suck your dick, do it while you are standing next to one of your favorite bands so I can watch them kick the crap out of you. You have no respect, no sense of history and just so you are aware, it's you little emo brats sitting in the corner closing yourselves off from the world that are lame, sad, and pathetic. So come up for air, take a breath, and realize that there is some great music out there that you are missing because you are too busy whining.

I was at Coachella. Ok lineup for Coachella for having Sir Paul McCartney saving the budget for Coachella 2010 in Los Angeles.
This lineup looks awesome.

Im planning to attend Street Scene in San Diego and Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco.
Keep the new news coming Stereogum
