Madonna Gets Freak Folkie

Another tribute tracklist for this fine Thursday, although this one's already got a name -- and also happens to be infinitely less sad than the last. NME reports that the likes of Devendra Banhart, Bat For Lashes, Lavender Diamond, Ariel Pink, Giant Drag, and VietNam will tackle tunes from the material girl's catalogue for Through The Wilderness: A Tribute To Madonna, to benefit Madge's Raising Malawi charitable organization. Most of 'em seem promising, though we want vid reenactments. Devendra in pink strapless dress and gloves to match doing "Material Girl"? Hott. Track assignments after the jump.

01 Giant Drag - "Oh Father"
02 Bat for Lashes w/ Moon and Moon - "Justify My Love"
03 Lavender Diamond - "Like A Prayer"
04 The Tyde - "Hung Up"
05 Ariel Pink - "Like A Virgin"
06 VietNam - "Human Nature"
07 Mountain Party with Devendra Banhart - "Material Girl"
08 The Bubonic Plague - "Who's That Girl"
09 Siddhartha - "Holiday"
10 The Chapin Sisters - "Borderline"
11 Winter Flowers - "Live To Tell"
12 The Pangaeans - "Impressive Instant"
13 Alexandra Hope - "Lucky Star"
14 Jonathan Wilson - "La Isla Bonita"
15 Lion of Panjshir - "Crazy For You"
16 The Prayers - "Cherish"
17 Women and Children - "Burning Up"
18 Golden Animals - "Beautiful Stranger"

Well, considering Ariel Pink pretty much DID reenact material girl for his "For Kate I Wait" video... who am I kidding. That cover'll be DOPE.

I want to know what Siddhartha's cover is going to sound like. A friend introduced me to the group, and they are amazing. A psych group out of Detroit. Their frontman is like Arthur Lee and Iggy Pop mixed together, but he also has a Morrissey thing going. i saw them live in L.A. and they are monsters. The lead singer is Marlon Hauser and that dude just seems to interesting to be doing something for Madonna.

re: giant drag
the drummer quit which he had done once before. she writes all the material anyway. the new line-up with a full band just played two shows last week, one of them opening for jesus and mary chain and anne sang just like honey with them. totally awesome!

I can not believe this is actually going to happen! Paul Beahan (Manimal Vinyl) is a genius for doing this. The Chapin Sisters and Winter Flowers split LP is the most original thng to be released this year!

I just saw Siddhartha play in San Francisco for the first time, and they are amazing. Its like The Velvet Underground meets Love but their singer is like a futuristic Iggy Pop. He leaps and climbs on top of ten foot amps and leaps off stage. All sorts of feedback. Like a black Sonic Youth too. I don't even think i could see how they would fit into this thing, but I heard some of Marlon Hauser's poems while they just did improv and it was breathtaking.

re: Siddhartha (Marlon Hauser)

I heard that Marlon Hauser recorded the whole thing himself without the rest of Siddhartha, I have been trying to get my hands on a copy of "Holiday" for a while.

Siddhartha and Giant Drag on the same label is weird. Its fitting that the Sidd's singer did the song by himself and the chick from Giant Drag IS Giant drag. i thought her band left her or something. Siddhartha has the potential to be more than what they are. they remind me of The Doors a little bit.

I saw both Lavender Diamond and Siddhartha recently in San Francisco. Both acts are amazing. I cant wait to hear what there songs sound like. to me lavender diamond is carrying on the tradition of great folkies from the 1960's while bringing their own twist. Siddhartha live....is fucking amazing. they are seriously like a mixture of all things great about Love, The Doors, and maybe even a little bit of The Stooges. their singer and their guitar player with the short hair are crazy. high energy and jumping all over the place. i cant wait to see them again in Cali. i want to know when the record is coming out. i just bought lavender diamonds

I hadn't heard of Siddhartha until coming on here and reading about them on the Madonna Tribute. I checked out their myspace page and their music is cool. the footage of them is insane. I hope this group lasts a while so I can see them. On to the other groups, Giant Drag is fucking awesome and I am down for anything Annie Hardy is a part of. I also just heard about Bat For Lashes and they are really cool too. Its a shame we have no Panda Bear on this record though.

The show at Spaceland was awesome. I love the chapin sisters normally but i am a bit bored with them now. the prayers kick ass. i want to see what happens to those guys. siddhartha was super cool. i didn't know the chick from mountian party was in the group but they were really cool. their set was too short. do they have a record? and where was madonna? she should have been dancing naked in the trees.
