MTVu Lost my respect a while ago, you know when they stopped showing music videos and started showing more and more dating shows and labeling old epiosdes of the Real World from like 3 years ago as Vintage MTV.

That unfortunately is a good example of what a lot of college kids are listening to, at least in my experience at Hofstra. Still kind of a depressing list.

wow that list is shocking. i think us collegians need a little more stars and phoenix and less, er, motion city soundtrack. sheesh, its bad taste like that which gave W. four more years..

There are a couple of listenable bands up there (death cab, gorrilaz), even if a little more than predictable. As for the "emo" stuff, I can't wait till that trend dies. Muse by the way is awesome, if you can get past the fact that they are ripping off Radiohead.

Michigan State has the Impact...

which is pretty excellent most of the time. still prone to some emo every so often, but nothing so extreme as you see up there.
but sadly, i too agree that that's not too far off.

Couple of points:

1) College kids like me are listening to what college kids back in the late 80's listened to. Today's music is such crap. Even with what is talked about on this site...yes a lot of it is interesting, say for example Animal Collective. However I'd say probably 95% of all indie, and indie rock is POP music. I want to rock. I am young. This is why I listen to Sonic Youth and Husker Du on repeat. Show me an indie band today that is loud, intelligent, and full of passion yet just not some retro throw back.

2) The emo thing is a con. Remember when emo had something to do with indie rock? Now it’s just a label these majors use to sell pop-punk to the kids who cry over not getting laid. It will never go away.

Jeff just hit a few nails on the head. Why anyone listens to My Chemical Romance is beyond me. Is it b/c the lead wears eyeliner and shakes when he sings? At least the old MTV fave Marilyn Manson had different colored eyeballs.

If you're looking for rock and roll you may have to look locally. There's some good local acts out here in Boston. They're not listening to My Chemical Romance either.

Jeff,

From my understanding, emo didn't have anything to do with indie rock until pretty recently. EMOtional hardcore punk rock.

Check out fourfa's history of emo:

I teach at a college, and, well, I can vouch for most of these, unfortunately. The rub here is specifically the NAME of the awards and channel. "University" is playing off the retired term "College Rock," popular in the 80's to refer to REM, Husker Du, SST, Dischord, etc., etc. Then, in the early 90s, it morphed into "Alternative," and covered a stylistically disparate palette of bands mostly on major labels, like Nirvana, Soundgarden and Greenday. Now, with the collusion of the majors into four behemoths, the term has morphed into a commercially defined one--"Indie Rock." Of course, nothing that makes its way onto MTV (usually) still qualifies as "indie," in the spirit of the term.

So, "University" rock, as MTV is retroactively trying to market its bland pop music (Arcade Fire/Gorillaz as the exceptions), is, well, appropriate, but only when applied to the majority of fraternity/sorority affiliated college students.

maybe i attend an especially awesome college, but i know very few people who listen to that shit. given, there is always the emo kid who didn't grow out of that stage in high school with the rest of us (who, me? what?), but our radio station plays a lot of good stuff. i have a radio show and play a lot of sufjan, stars, a.c. newman and decemberists.
i'd say one of the most popular artists on our radio station is beck, and you really can't go wrong with him, right?

i watched MTVu freshman year at a different school and when we didn't get it here, i was bummed. but from the looks of it, i'm not missing out on much.

It appears My Chemical Romance was booted off radio station INDIE 103.1 in Los Angeles last week after the punkish station received complaints from listeners. The station began airing a MCR cover of a Misfits song, after which the station reportedly received dozens of complaints from listeners via phones and the web. Sex Pistol Steve Jones, guitarist Dave Navarro, and Rob Zombie all dj at the station.

Hendrix is a good school--so is mine, but I hear much more Yellowcard, MCR, Jack Johnson and OAR than Sufjan and Decemberists. The latter is definitely present, especially on the cooler radio shows.

I guess it's all in who you hang out with...

This "faux indie prick" has no problem with what anyone wants to listen to--but a big problem with tastemakers that don't demonstrate the possession of taste.

As a college student...I don't watch mtvu.
Except when that awesome OkGo video's on, then I'm game.

Or, rather, I didn't vote for these 'Woodies' so, I guess it's more the kids who had time to watch mtvu and vote that are represented here. Not the kids who are really into music and are too busy going to shows or what have you.

But seriously, what'd you expect?

M83
Ulrich Schnauss
and that goddamn new Pharrell single.

A lot of the Woodie Awards votes come from MTVu reps assaulting people on campus and asking them to vote, not just people voting online. Therefore you're gonna get a lot of people winning just on name recognition from random accosted people (who may not even be students!) instead of more accurate data from people volunteering themselves to vote online.

The MTVu reps on campus work closely with campus radio, which I work for and love, so I can't say too much bad about them. Plus one's really, really hot.

As a university student and music fan, I have to defend these so called fake "punk" bands. Most of them have never claimed to be punk. Punk back in the day was considered garbage music. Now it's suddenly so legit to indie snobs and such.

I'm glad Fall Out boy got some recognition- yes its dance rock, but they do have quality lyrics and the tour was fun. That is part of the reason for going to see a band!

MCR has good videos. Uh, and that's all.

And MUSE is absolutely fucking incredible.

I like that indie fans are supposed to be SO indie that they have to shun all other indie fans for their indie music as well as fans of other things that are not indie. It's quite a slippery slope...it makes me want to shun everyone, but then I'd be emo and I'd have to shun myself, violently.

As for what college kids are listening to - they're listening to the same four songs over and over, and humping each other. Which is why I don't leave my room very much, and exist in an ipod bubble when I'm forced onto campus.

Muchmusic is just as bad as MTV, even worse if you count the number of hours of MTV programming they air. Aside from their TRL ripoff they run maybe 1.5 hours of music videos a day. Nick & Jessica gets repeated more than that in 24 hours. Let's not forget the top video right now on MM is a Nickelback song as well.

sad, but true. i go to a very good school which has its own conservatory, and in such an environment of combined intelligence and musical accomplishment, you'd think halfway-decent taste would flourish-- but it doesn't appear to work that way. a friend of mine still listens to the soundtrack to titanic. a lot. and i only wish that i could call her an anomaly.

You guyz might complain a lot, but as far as I remember, when I was a college kid, Spin Doctors and EMF were the thing. Give me some air!
Let today's kids enjoy MCR if that's what connects with their life, for god's sake. 8 years ago, it was Manson and I don't recall anyone bitching, i guess because he was nasty and rebellious. Now, in 2005, who are we, indie hipsters, to dictate them what they should think and feel in order to belong to our worthless musical intelligensia? We're not even free listeners. Can't listen to catchy music for a minute without feeling the hipster's guilt. I guess those kids are truly free. They can enjoy as much of Britney Spears or Sufjan Steven without being tortured by this insane musical morality crap that haunts us all. They're the Superhumans!

Uggh we've got a lot more indie here than that (which should be good) but it's almost all driven by the O.C./Garden State effect, also with Gray's Anatomy trying to replicate that.

At least some people read pitchfork--that makes them much more open-minded and much less pretentious about their tastes, expanding beyond the simple O.C. offerings.

(sarcasm intended)

And in spite of all this I couldn't find anyone to go 45 minutes on the train or bus to Super Furry Animals with tonight.
