Map Your Way To New Music

Coolfer points us to EMI and Last.fm's new experiment in music discovery: map making! They're calling their new system "tuneglue-audiomap," and here's how it works: Head here, type in an artist, and click the circle that pops up representing that band. When you expand, tuneglue will generate a visual web of similar-sounding artists. Of course, EMI artists will stick out on the otherwise two-toned map with lots or pretty rainbow colors in place of the drab black node.

Interesting idea, but not so useful yet. (Aren't all the kids hearing about cool bands from Zune squriting, anyway?) But there are at least two fun aspects of tunelage. For one, type in "Sound Team" -- and get Marc Hogan's nightmare playlist!

Or try typing in Nirvana. Expand ... and the map is almost as depressing as "Pennyroyal Tea." That weirds us out to the max. Now you go. Have fun!

Doesn't work in Safari. For me anyway.

It's sad how after a point, it can't branch off anymore and just keep shifting about...

Nice idea, but absolutely useless. Its an annoying version of the related artists section of last.fm. The problem with last.fm's related artists thing is that it just bases it on what the majority of the people listening to an artist listen to, there isn't necessarily a real connection with the music. There are some where you type in an indie band and get crazy metal connections.

Here's one based on Amazon's recommendation engine:

kind of cool, but i worked with it for a while, and didn't really find any new artists. maybe it would be helpful for someone with a more limited knowledge of music.

those bands give me an icky feeling. thank god the internet has empowered really shitty bands. kinda like the indie-blog version of major mags and critics hailing the vines as the next beatles, or p4k stroking off CYHSY as the saviors of indie rock. saturation sux. as for recommendations, you're better off listening to a friend you trust, or looking at a recommendation from amazon on your next purchase (toolish? whatever, probably, but it works fine enough.)

i was pleasantly surprised to go from twilight singers to tv on the radio. somebody's been paying attention. the next jump after that though gives you sufjan, wolf parade, bss, arcade fire, animal collective, AND yo la tengo?that's just lazy.

This is an old idea. During the dot-com craze six years ago or so someone else was doing this -- perhaps MongoMusic? My memory's fuzzy.
