Martin Scorsese Announces As-Yet Untitled George Harrison Documentary

Is it too early to call Marty's forthcoming Rolling Stone's documentary an abomination? 'Cause we already did. But we're all about redemption, and today reports come of a project should bring back Scorsese back into our rock-doc good graces:

Via Daily Variety:

Martin Scorsese has committed to direct an untitled documentary about the life of George Harrison.

Scorsese will produce with Harrison's widow Olivia and Nigel Sinclair in a co-production between Scorsese's Sikelia Prods., Harrison's Grove Street Prods., and Sinclair's Spitfire Pictures.

[It] will cover Harrison's Beatles career and later years that included a successful solo music career as well as a foray as a movie mogul when he backed Handmade Films and made pics such as "Monty Python's Life of Brian" and "Time Bandits." Scorsese, who explored themes of faith in "Kundun" and "The Last Temptation of Christ," will also focus closely on the Eastern spiritual pursuits that were central to Harrison's life.

Sounds compelling, right? The doc's "being constructed as a theatrical release," but don't line up for tix just yet: it's gonna take a few years to complete. The Quiet One's fam is along for the ride, providing Scorsese with access to private archives, and the surviving Beatles are expected to participate as well. Here's hoping it's more Last Waltz or No Direction Home and less Shine A Light. As mentioned, the doc's still in need of a title. So since Martin's an avid Stereogum reader, hit us with your suggestions and we'll be sure to send 'em to him.

Love ya, Georgie.

Scorcese did a great job with Bob Dylan: No Direction Home... This sounds like a perfectly good team-up of movie maker and subject.

George's ALL THINGS MUST PASS is my favorite post-Beatles solo record. It's massive and humble at the same time.

Wow. Leave it to Stereogum to review a movie months before release based on a trailer. If you hate the Stones so much, why do you report on them? Is it because they are much more significant than most of the bands appearing on this website? Or maybe because even in their mid-sixties they can still sell out stadiums and please fans the world over. Most of the bands appearing here couldn't fill half a bar in the midwest. And as much as you can try to deny it, these bands here ARE IN THEIR PRIME already! Look at your "Gum Mix." Maybe Thurston Moore will still be playing the NY State fair in 20 years. And only if he's with the rest of Sonic Youth. Otherwise, we will see him and the rest of these groups next to the butter sculptures.

Hey you cool elitist, lighten up. Just because your jeans are cutting off circulation to your private members, doesn't mean you have to bash what could be a very important and entertaining documentary.

George rocks!

I think a good name for the Scorsese movie would be
"Beware of Darkness".

"Heading for the light"could be a good title. Pretty much sums up the goal George set for himself.

George is still my rock-God! A good name for the film could be Here Comes the Sun.
