Maxïmo Park's Declaration of Dependence

From an Independent article, "The American Dream" ("Can new British bands make it in the US, like Coldplay? Ed Caesar joins Editors and Maxïmo Park in Nashville to find out.")

Second best quote, from Maxïmo Park's Paul Smith:

"We're certainly a band who thinks about our music. But we see ourselves as a pop group. 'Indie' doesn't enter my vocabulary when I'm describing us. Because although we're on an independent label, 'ïndïe' has come to mean a lifestyle choice and a haircut more than anything. It has a mentality that says 'we're going to do what we want, and sod everyone else' - and I don't like that. We genuinely want to make music that's going to appeal to all sorts of people across the world."

Maxïmo Park - "Fear Of Falling" (MP3)

Anyway, here's the best quote from that article:

In the days before the gig, several impromptu straw polls on the club-going populace of Nashville reveals little interest in the British nouvelle vague. "Who?", says one bartender in the Bourbon Street Blues and Boogie Bar. "Editors", I reply. "They're a bit like Joy Division." "What kind of a name is Joy Division?" She has a point, but we're straying off course. Has she heard of any British bands? "Sure", she says, "Coldplay, REM."

yay yay maximo park! i love those guys. the editors are good but like an interpol rip-off. if you want some good but somewhat unoriginal alt pop rock "indie"-ish music i would recommend We Are Scientists.

anyway maximo park rocks yay

if "making it big" means getting as big as coldplay then it's definitely overrated. i mean, i saw them in brisbane (australia) a few weeks ago where they played a sold out club show to a room full of indie kids who were completely losing their shit... that's possibly the best environment to see a band like that in, there wasn't a single indifferent arm-crosser there and all the poser retards weren't there either. they haven't exactly "made it big" here, yet that's clearly a good thing.

Maximo Park are like the freakin best band ever. i met paul and got the guys to sign the set list from the concert i attended , and whoever doesnt like we are scientists should kill themselves not really but they are in fact very good.

When I saw Maximo Park it was in this little club with a crowd of maybe 15 people and NO ONE DANCED! The singer looked riduculous with his stage show infront of that audience. Its too bad because the music is really good and the band definetly deserves a better crowd...we talked to them after the show and they were really really nice

I'm English and I love Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Though as they haven't got a record deal yet (as far as i know), and most copies of their self released album were shifted stateside, it's pretty sodding hard to get a copy of it without illegally downloading it off the internet. Ahem. Won't say how i got mine. But I think they will be big over here once they get proper distribution. Talking Heads, Arcade Fire, and Franz Ferdinand all have plenty of fans in the UK... so should be no probs for CYHSY.

I saw the Maximo Park/Editors/Features Nashville show and it was amazing. It was a secret, guest list only gig sponsored by Jack Daniels UK promotion. Each of the bands sounded great, and I would definitely see them again.

I hate it when people think they're different from other people who are fans of the same band. Chances are if you go to a MP show, you're not going to be a poser. And even if some people are there who don't look like they should be there, give them a freakin chance. Maybe they genuinely want to check out the band. Just because they dress in a way you don't think they should does not make them a poser. Get to know the people first before you judge. If you don't do that, you're as bad as the real posers in my book.

I’ve become a huge fan of Maximo Park over the last week. I completely agree with Paul Smith about the “indie” label thing. So many people these days try so hard to be indie and it really has become more like a way of life than just a musical genre. I don’t think there should be any negative stigma about Maximo Park calling themselves a pop group instead. I hope more Americans become familiar with both new and old British music. Every time I mention bands like the Stone Roses to my friends, they have no clue who they are. Half the time, people aren’t even that familiar with Franz Ferdinand, and I would consider them semi-successful over on this side of the pond!
