Meatheads Chant "Steak" At Of Montreal Show

Kevin Barnes writes about the beef-brained hecklers at Of Montreal's recent show in The Big Easy -- and parts with a little fellatio-condoning wisdom:

our show was a lot of fun. the highlights for me were the debut of the three headed tiger bull and the first live performance of "the past is a grotesque animal". the low point was when a group of misguided creeps chanted "steak, steak, steak" after we played "wraith pinned to the mist". it just proves,no matter how much you want to add something positive to the world, there will always be people who try to bring you down. not to say our selling of a song to a corporate steak house was something positive, but sometimes you have to suck a little dick to get by. that's just a hard fact of life. but really, of all the evil organizations out there, it's hard to imagine the thought process behind heckling of Montreal. oh well.

Words to live by, kids. And screw 'em Kevin, we still love you and your dick sucking advice. Kevin goes on to describe his evening running around Bourbon Street with a slowly-growing entourage of OM-fan "indie kids," crashing hotel parties, and fielding questions about the Christian implications of Hissing Fauna's "Gronlandic Edit." Sadly, the night ended before Kevin could climb upon a rooftop to declare himself a golden god. But at least there's something left to do next time you stalk him.

Oh, come on. They should be good-natured - I expect a cover of the advertisment version.

I was right there in the middle and didn't hear any chanting either, but I guarantee that the majority of those chanting were in the mob mentality and thought they were doing something positive, and only the few original instigators had any ill will. Please dont judge nola on the actions of a few blog-addicted indie kids going to the show on their parents money.

Was that really considered heckling though? If I'd heard that, I would've laughed and tried to sing along to Wraith with the lyrics to the Outback song instead.

Taking his craft a little too seriously, no?

I know there's a lot of factors involved in a band making the decision to sell their song to a commercial, so you can't just shout "Sell-Out" from your soapbox and be done with it. At the same time, though, you sell your shit to a fucking steakhouse chain, then you probably deserve a few heckles from jilted fans, who may not want to associate their favorite song with charbroiled porterhouses and blooming onions, or whatever the hell they even serve at the Outback.

And when Kevin Barnes writes "of all the evil organizations out there, it's hard to imagine the thought process behind heckling of Montreal," did he ever stop to think that the Outback might actually BE one of those evil organizations, and that he has made the choice to be a shill for them?

You can't just cash the check and wash your hands. As far as I'm concerned, when they pull in to the Bowery Ballroom, or whichever venue they're filling these days, the marquee might as well read Outback Steakhouse presents: Of Montreal.

And maybe they could serve appetizers before the show, too; some onion rings or jalepeno poppers. That might be nice.

Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?
Written, Performed, Recorded, and Mixed by Kevin Barnes.

Yeah what a tool Of Montreal are these days. Like, they probably didn't even write those songs.

Maybe he got heckled because he's an asshole.

I met him after a show last year in Portland, he seems like an incredibly nice guy to me. Actually, when he noticed that the tour EP I bought was actually just the empty case for display (go merch guy!), he ran back in himself to get me a real copy of it. Very cool of him.

All these kids that want to get all indignant when artist sell their music for ads are the same ones that download all their music for free for file sharing sites.

How do they expect these bands to make any money?

hah, i was there on the balcony and i thought all those kids were chanting "snake". i was baffled, but my friends set me straight today over lunch. we had a discussion about it, and i figured that it's kind of an offensive thing to do if you came to see a band that you like or respect enough for making music that you'd pay 15 bucks to get in.

but really, as much as i like kevin barnes and of montreal, it sounds like someone is a little sore from all that corporate dick sucking. i really don't care at all that they sold "requeim" to outback if it helps support them so they can continue making and playing music that i like. but for such a fun loving, sometimes positive band, a little mindless heckling shouldn't be that hard to brush off.

on a side note, half that place seemed to be full of a bunch of clubbers waiting for the show to end so they could get down to party rap, so that could be your "meathead" contingent.

wish i would have known about the roaming stalker-party, but there were hands to be held and clumsy kisses to be made. and bourbon street is like a hellish nightmare made reality of booze, piss, puke, testosterone drunk frat boys, angry horse cops and awful cover bands barely distinguishable between the same canned "zydeco" song that seems to be on a loop in every other bar or tourist trap.
(plus hawk and a hacksaw were drinking in this little irish pub around the corner)

...Artists dont make much money from cd sales unless they self-produced/recorded. Most bands get their money from concerts and merchandise sales.

And come on guys: if there are a million other less renowned indie bands out there that have been around longer and haven't sold their songs to whomever, then clearly it says something about Of Montreal rather than measley salaries (which may be small but must be at least a liveable wage for most.)

LOL, when I searched for Of Montreal on Yahoo music, the band came up under the Genre "TV Soundtracks". Looks like they still have some cum on their dress...

Can we stop calling selling out sucking dick? How can you compare contributing to the relentless brainwashing of society with an act OF LOVE?

Chiming in a little late, but I was there too. I indeed heard people chanting towards the front, and I thought they were saying "snake". This was me and my friends' first Of Montreal show, so we just assumed they usually have some kind of snake prop and people wanted them to take it out.

But yeah, based on my observations, I too was under the impression that it was more of a nod towards the band rather than heckling them. But if that's what they were doing, they need to take their parents' money and go elsewhere. And I also have to agree with one more thing. You'll always have the annoying indie-snob kids, but at least New Orleans has friendly hipsters for the most part... and hipsters who dance.

Talk all you want of selling out or pejorative terms of the same... Maybe being an idiot once is almost excuseable, but if I saw some punk wanna-be hipster kids shouting shit like that I would have put my cigarette out on their toungue and made them thank me for the honour afterwards.
