Miss Independent & Mike Watt

We scoffed at the first reports of this odd couple, but sure enough, ex-Minuteman and now Stooge Mike Watt is laying bass down on the next Kelly Clarkson record -- and Pitchfork has the photographic proof!

Nice nab for Kelly! Meanwhile, Mike had nothing but praise for Ted Leo's favorite American Idol contestant:

I knew nothing of Kelly Clarkson before this but can tell you, in my opinion, that she can sing her ass off. Man, she's got pipes and goes for it. She also didn't have any airs or a big posse of sycophants and was just plain up-front people, which to me is very happening 'cause I ain't so used to all the fronting that can go [on] in some scenes.

It was a challenge too 'cause it was much different than where I've been with music, but different is good, especially when what the people involved wanted was to hear someone working a bass like they meant it, and that's where I've always tried to come from.

When [Clarkson] had to bail, she said to [Kahne], 'I think the old punk guy idea's a good one,' and we all laughed.

Aww. We think so, too! Now she should bring it full circle and get Ted to lay down some guit, if only to force squeamish bloggers into writing about a reality show winner. Oh wait -- she just managed that, didn't she. Whatever, we're still for it!

It's about time. American Idol really embodies the D.I.Y. spirit.
Hey look! It's the apocalypse! Maybe that's who "Since You've Been Gone" is really about! Jesus coming back in the Rapture!

if watt says it's OK, it's OK. you will not find anyone out there with more integrity. and don't forget, the man has always had a serious madonna fixation. why not kelly?

For some reason I am incredibly excited about this pairing. I find Kelly to be the pop girl with the most sense and talent out there and obviously she's a cool girl.

Hype, glad to see I'm not the only one. I mean dave navarro played with christina aguilera at the vmas a couple of years ago, not saying that dave is anywhere near as cool as mike watt.

Scoff all you want, but "Walk Away" is pure pop perfection.

Anyway, this does mean she is going to cover "Felt Like A Gringo", right?

i can imagine something even better: the reunited Stooges (incl. Mike Watt) as Kelly's studio/touring band... with Iggy Pop on back-up vocals!

my favorite part about this picture is the obvious zit on her face... guess that proactiv isn't working out so well, but at least she's getting paid to sell it ;)

"Hey you guys read Pitchfork too?"

Is Pitchfork the only site allowed to post about this story?

Who cares about the inverse relationship, i'd rather read the little new bits offa here than over a Pfork, anyways.
Mike Watt's move here may be the most advanced thing he's done this year. The guy's not exactly pop but he's still trying it out. Mad props.

Shouldn't the fact that Dave Navarro and Christina Aguilera took part in the same type of stunt be a very good reason NOT to think this is okay? Or for that matter the actions of Iggy "I Think Sum 41 are Punk" Pop?

kelly clarkson, sugary as she is, is more
authentic than dave navarro could ever be!
(anyway what does he have to do with any of
this?)

the mike watts pairing is great for her..
maybe she'll actually sound cool?

Kelly is amazing. I worked with her on some industry stuff, and she was the nicest and most genuine person I've worked with, celebrity or not.

Plus she can sing.
