Modest Mouse Tops The Charts

No leak was gonna sink We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, turns out. The Marr-infused Modest Mouse debuts at #1 on this week's Billboard Top 200 (their last effort Good News... entered at #19), selling 128,585 copies in its first official week of availability. Congrats, Isaac! No more cutting, please. Now just imagine how many it would have sold if you guys actually paid for it!

Thats the 3rd indie band to crack the top 5 in the past weeks. Better watch out state of popular music.

I did buy the album! It's not great; I like half of it. But they've been around, and stayed around. Modest Mouse has earned the #1...

Good for them. Better to see them at #1 than the latest release from (insert trite minstrel show rapper or wannabe punk band pulled from the pages of teen bop).

You morons crack me up. The record doesn't have to be great. As someone said before, Modest Mouse have earned #1. Brock has endured a fucked up life, paid his dues; and though the sound has progressed, it's still unmistakeably Modest Mouse. The man created a sound for fuckssake! Douchebags(most of you are).

I honestly can't believe some of you people. In what way is this not ten times better of an album than Good News? Not only that, but it sounds a lot more like old Modest Mouse than Good News did, too. It's like some of you haven't even listened to it.

sellout? one day all of you little kiddies we'll realize that a band that has toured for nearly 30 years would like to not have to have a day-job when they're 45. if you're paying taxes and don't own multiple AK's and don't have a plan of mobilization on the capitol, you're a 'sellout' too.

The Modest Mouse defenders are pretty unreasonable. Why root for a meth-head rapist just because his band been around for a while, and some dude from the 80's dusted off his flange pedal? Who cares about the sellout shit, I typed it, and I firmly believe Modest Mouse sucks for more reasons than the car and beer ads.

Miguel,

I could care less how cool a comment on a blog makes me look (if anything, it rates me lower), but if you're really concerned about what makes you cool, don't spin the Mouse.

It's pretty fair to say it's ridiculous that Modest Mouse sold 129,000 copies of a bullshit album in a week. There was never much in their music that said mass appeal, and most of the non-indie listening public first heard Modest Mouse in the car and beer ads. Good for Brock, he's making money. Nothing's wrong with that, but I don't have to be impressed with a crappy artistic effort from a mutilate-for-publicity musician with waning artistic credibility.

MM deserves this so much. If you hated GNFPWLBN because it didn't sound like older MM, then you'd have to say this one was better. I just don't think many of you listened more than once.

If you want to hear "old" Modest Mouse, keep spinning "Lonesome Crowded...", "Building Nothing..." or "This is a long Drive...". This new album is different in many good ways and it has a few lame sounds in it. Overall, I'm very pleased that Isaac and his friends (both old and new) are still focusing on the music and playing incredible live shows. Congrats to the band for this latest success and continue touring so that others can enjoy.

im sure you have all the room in the world to talk isaac rock. but who gives a shit about your opinions. your entitled to them. but if i were going to recomend a group to listen to right now, it would be modest mouse. their music is up in the revolutionary levels of nirvana and the beatles. isaac brock is a musical genious. meth-head and rapist. fuck you. go ahead and buy into popular society's fucked up stories. have a nice life.

personally, i found no interest in the music of the new album, as i also felt about the last album (goodnews). I think modest mouse has completely changed as a band. though it stays original and applies new ideas, i think that issac has used up all of his genious in his erlier albums.

I listen back on albums like "this is a long drive", "lonesome crowded west", "the fruit that ate itself", and "building nothing out of somthing", and i immediatley feel nostalgic. Issac was once musical genious, his music deeply moved me and changed my life. beutiful, flawless music that has lead me through many of my life expiriences of the past 5 or so years. his lyrics were once very deep and meaningful, somtimes depressing, somtimes funny, sometimes very inspiring. I cant see how a man who was once a work of art has become a lazy musician thats sell thousands of half-assed written albums. i think life was better when issac did drugs.

god knows who i would be without modest mouse. they may desearve the recagnition for their music, but that should have happened long ago, back when they were the greatest band alive.

so please people, if you want to hear the voice of god, dont buy the new album, instead buy every one of the old ones exept "good news"

this album rocks my socks off, bar-none. most developed and structured awesomeness they've put out, i'm so glad its getting the recognition it deserves. way, way, way better than good news. only 2 tracks are sub-par: #4 and #7. i downloaded it before it came out, and pre-ordered the special edition so i could get the kick-ass postcards. f*** yea. only wish they would f-in play in D.C.

i find it hilarious that you guys can't even tell awesome music when you hear it, as it stands its all about how they sound which is awesome. do you really think that someone else is going in and doing all the work for them like this manufactured pop and rap (not all rap) shit i hear everyday. I say kudos to anyone who gets off their ass and does something they enjoy and know others enjoy. you guys are all pissed just because people whose taste in music is despised by you are now listening to modest mouse. i think it is cool that music is starting to break free from the traditions and habbits that have been overused and overcopied and eventually turned into something to be despised if you are like me and like something fun to listen to. MODEST MOUSE'S MUSIC IS FUN END OF STORY don't be pissed just because they are making money and they're music is getting more polished. and i don't know about you guys, but i actually listened to the smiths and they are awesome too so go take a tissue and dry off your little 12 year old girl vaginas

thank you dylan. i was reading and reading and hoped to come across someone who appreciated modest mouses newest album as much as i did.
for all of you complaining about how much different the new album is, try listening to any one of their previous albums over and over again. gets boring doesnt it? yeah because its the SAME THING! they need the money to support the band, and they wont get it from selling copies of their older music to the few of you who would only listen to "the lonesome crowded..", "building something.." and "this is a long drive.." i started off listening to MMs newest album, and have worked my way backwars, and has loved every album theyve ever made (with the exception of sad sappy sucker, which was a total waste of money. bands change, and if you would ever LISTEN to a different band, you would know that. adapting to the changed in society is the only way they can continue to make profit, and makin profit is not necessarily "selling out", because they make music that people like so they can enjoy it. and if you wanna keep whining about it, then stay in your home and listen to 'long distance drunk' for the rest of your life.

Fuck all of you guys that are complaining about 'selling out.' I've been with Modest Mouse since I was a little kid, and I know what the old stuff sounded like. I loved it, and love it still, but We Were Dead is their BEST ALBUM. Lyrically, there's never been anything written as coherent and beautiful as "Little Motel" or "Fire It Up" or "Spitting Venom," no question about it.

The only complaints about this album I have are that the last couple tracks aren't stellar, and that "King Rat" only made it to vinyl. There's not a single album, by Modest Mouse or by any other band, that compares to this one.

Bravo to that. and barf-fest on the mentality of the new album haters. Although, i must admit that i was once one of them.

I absolutely DESPISED the new album at first. I couldn't fucking believe it, Issac Brock is the one man and Modest Mouse is the one band that i thought i would never have to give up on. But I tried listening to it a few times, and then i couldn't even play it at all for about three months. Finally i started playing some stuff here and there. I began liking a handful of songs instead of just one or two, and eventually one by one the songs made complete sense, every single one. yes, even "invisible in your car", which at first listen(s) may seem unnecessarily abrasive and annoying. but i can now be found driving through Issaquah with my windows rolled down blasting that song every chance i get. Though Seattle could probably use it more.

The lyrics on the new album are fucking through the roof, from opening line to finish.

and it's not just the lyrics. the music is bible-status worthy, plain and simple. Modest Mouse has been my favorite band for the past ten years, ever since i heard them. and i know that will never ever change. This album is completely groundbreaking on all conceivable levels. This cannot be stressed enough. If you can't hear it, then you're just not listening. Quit spitting your venomous nonsense because all of us who are actually using our ears know the truth is ringing, loud and fucking clear.

ALL of their albums are fucking glorious (though i understand why "the moon" and "lonesome crowded west" stand out for so many people). "good news" is probably their weakest, but still very very good.

MM invented a new genre, an inventive poetic style, a completely new way of approaching a guitar. a completely new way of using one's vocal chords to fit 10 simultaneous personalities into one. and on and on and on..

This is the greatest album of all time.

Amen.

Thank you for summing it up Modest pony. I saw them last night and it was great. It was my second time seeing them and they haven't lost any fire at all. I've been a fan since immediately before M&A came out and have never stopped loving them. I think the new album is wonderful. There are exactly three songs I dislike on it, which is about how many I disliked on Good News. Three bad songs out of fifteen is not too bad no matter how you slice it. People want to naysay, but their new stuff is just as interesting. Spitting Venom and Fly trapped in a jar live were freaking insane.

you cant just make a statement like they suck, rock etc.... there has to be some support. why is is the suck/rock. personally i dont mind their music, however i do get irritated when people discuss them as highly talented musicians. songwriting is one thing, musical talent is another. they played a show at red rocks in colorado recently and filled the stage with muscicans. While im sure it impressed many in the audience, it added nothing to the quality of the music. In a band that simply recits songs they wrote in the studio, there is no room for on the spot expression, no room to really jam. and when your a musician thats how you distinguish talent, anyone can memorize a metal solo, recite it and give the impression they can shred, but you sit down with and just try to flow some random music and jam with them, they have nothing. Basically, if your just play what you already now, your a songwriter not a musician, and thats what i see in modest mouse. If its the same live as it is on the album (especially if the solos are) there is a serious lack of musical talent being masked by songwriting ability... or in my opinion of this case, really just no talent period

*Sigh*. After about the 15th comment accusing the band of being sellouts I dropped to this comment. Are you serious? What proof? Hey, lets compare them to your life's achievements. You certainly aren't a sellout.

Whether or not it 'sounds' like their old music or not, it's theirs. None of their albums sound the same, that would get boring. And for that matter even with all the reused lyrics they are still 10 fold anything you stuck up cocks could concoct. This album just has better production value, they haven't sold out.

The worst thing is, you're not all a bunch of whiny indie kids, because indie people have a respect for the bands which made/make great strides in music, which whether or not you like all of their music, none of it, or only the older stuff you have to admit they've done. And indie people respect all forms of music for being music, and creating and influencing inspiration. The hipsters of late sure do seem to be stuck in this idea that only their opinions matter, of course, none of you bashers are hipsters in the true definition. Now go get your Starbucks, hop on your Mac, jam with your iPod, and have sex with your friend which 'doesn't make you gay, you're just experimenting' you stupid uneducated dicks.

Modest Mouse sucks gaping ass. That's just my opinion. I love these douchebags (like "a MUSICIAN" above) who pretentiously attempt to explain *why* any given band is better than another. What, on technical merit??? How fucking utterly ridiculous. What - I should say "Oh, you must be right - you're a musician, my mistake..." Fuck off - musicians are a dime a dozen - get over yourself, you douche. Opinions are subjective, so let people voice them. Nobody gives a rat's fucking ass what you think makes MM great. You like them - GREAT. I'm happy for you. Me? I think they are about the most boring, shit band on scene right now, or since their incarnation for that matter. Read that? BORING SHITE. If that rubs you the wrong way, then FUCK OFF. Nobody cares what you think, just like nobody cares what I think. But we can both say what we want. I won't attack anyone with an opinion, but when you attack others for their opinions - you're fair game you dumbfuck. And "great strides"? That's hilarious! Now shut the fuck up.
