Animal Collective Remix Phoenix
It's Thursday which must mean it is time for Phoenix remix news. But this one trumps your typical Thursday Phoenix remix news, because it is the news that hearkens an entire Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix remix album, nearly every track covered sometimes multiple times by a strong tag set including Devendra Banhart, Central Park buddies Passion Pit, YACHT, Chairlift, the Soft Pack, Friendly Fires, and more.
Let's not play games though: the biggest get for internet purposes is this redo by Animal Collective, both because it is Animal Collective, and the title and supplemental info give a big nod to animal in hiding, Deakin. Their choice is "Love Like A Sunset," grabbing a clip of Part I but mostly focusing on Part II, giving Wolfgang's epically cresting epicenter their own brand of sublime Feelsing, swirls, drones, shimmering laptop ticks and new beachfront vocals in place of the original's dusky synth and acoustic strums.
Grab the MP3 while you read Josh's statement of intent:
Via wearephoenix.com:
This spring i was in Panama with Brian. We were cramped into a van on a bumpy, winding central american road going a little too fast. Feeling a little edgy, I put on my headphones and listened to United and Alphabetical back to back. I watched passing fruit stands, a sweet central american dusk and memories of the massive schools of jelly fish, snapper, and trevally; the few dolphin and even the few bluefin tuna (too few) that brian and i had just had the joy of diving with the blend of all of these things put me at ease.Phoenix has been a staple for all four of us since Dave and Noah brought home United from the record store they used to work at. One of the records that would get us through some of those long cross country tour drives, we've listened to phoenix's jams many many times. We were all totally psyched to get asked to do this and it was super fun to work on it.
All the best to those dudes
Sorta funny to see Phoenix post a shot of the band sans Deakin, but in fairness there are a lot more of those floating around these days. Nice remix:

Doesn't include the Classixx remix of Litsztomania?? In a very remix-heavy year, that one's my favorite

It sounds like it could have been a lost cut from Post or Homogenic. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

How much did Sofia Coppola pay Animal Collective to remix this so Phoenix would get more popularity? This is seriously not ok.
Score = -6
Look, let's not pretend that Animal Collective aren't a pop group at this point, albeit an interesting one. Their experimental tendencies are not the driving force behind their band anymore. They hit Billboard charts with new releases, they are mentioned regularly in SPIN and Rolling Stone, and they play right before Tool at Lollapalooza. And the songs are catchy as hell. Pop group remixing pop group isn't so far fetched. It's not like they got Count Grishnack to do a remix and make any sort of underground perk up their ears.
Panda Bear talks about liking the Phoenix album in this interview too (note that it's Entertainment Weekly):

Good artist remixing good artist -- and the remix is a good one at that. What's NOT ok about that?

At this point, I would argue Phoenix is already more popular than Animal Collective.

Nice, Hypocrite. By mentioning Sofia Coppola in your hating comment, you showed you care more about gossip than music. Which makes you gay.

That is the PERFECT track for AC to remix.

I was wondering how long it'd take for AC to show up again. I missed reading people's back-and-forth comments hating on and defending them. Good to hear Deakin hasn't fallen off the face of the earth.

I'm really looking forward to hearing the YACHT remix of "Armistice." I've been loving "See Mystery Lights" lately, and "Wolfgang" was the album of the summer for me.

"They're choice is "Love Like A Sunset," grabbing a clip of Part I but mostly focusing on Part II..."
They are choice. Really Stereogum?

Yes, they are so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.
