Army Of Anyone - "Goodbye"

When the mood strikes us, we find ourselves in conversations about under-appreciated '90s acts here at Stereogum HQ -- acts including (but not limited to) Blind Melon and Stone Temple Pilots. And we (cautiously) proclaim that there's good news for STP fans! The DeLeo Brothers -- two of the best riffmakers of the grunge era -- have moved on with a Velvet Revolver of their own; their "super-group" is called Army Of Anyone, and its vox are provided by Richard Patrick (of Filter and NIN).

Army Of Anyone - "Goodbye" (MP3 Link Expired)

This track is as much as we've heard of the group's eponymous debut, and it's cut from the STP canon for sure: The song unfolds with the sort of smart time shifts for which the Pilots were known; the chorus comes in the half-time grunge power ballad variety, then to a vintage DeLeo Bros segue riff, before Filter dude starts in with the Weiland-apeing. Check the video (YouTube); he's even putting his hair like Scott W! Now he just needs needs that fancy drug habit, and the costume would be complete. Oddly enough, the riffage ends up sounding more like Velvet Revolver's "Slither" than anything. Go fig.

But otherwise, it's totally proficient (if entirely banal) grunge rock. And it's the DeLeos, so they have our best wishes. Still, who listens to this stuff anymore? And that Richard dude comes off like a reality rockstar show winner. Who's heard the rest of the record? Any good? Let us know.

This is the band that all those record execs who went up to Seattle in the early 90's were looking for. Prepackaged, boring and completely forgettable.

Have to disagree with the comments about Richard Patrick. This may be an indie rock board that Army Of Anyone or STP or Filter has no place on, but slagging Patrick as "reality rockstar show winner" is total BS. You may hate the records or you may love them (I happen to think the last two Filter records had some of the best post-grunge, big rock songs on them of the era), but he has a pretty solid pedigree. He is no bum off the street...

ha- funny story about stp circa mid-90's- they won a san diego music award for best band or somesuch- but the won whilst living in los angeles, and a fist fight broke out on stage when they won the award. hilarious!

This is an entirely great song that's about ten years too late.

R.I.P. Filter. Title of Record is on my top-ten best-ever list.

yeah Title of Record is very underrated. And the DeLeo's have a unique gift for combining melody and riffage so that you immediately know it's them.

This isn't the greatest song ever, but it's good & it's about as good as mainstream radio rock is gonna get in 2006.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. Title of Record? a "good" Filter album?
Filter was Richard Patrick and Brian Liesgang. Then, BL left bc he wanted Filter to be more "electronic", and RP wanted to write pop songs. He created a band, and called it Filter. The only good Filter album is their first one.

I expected more from Army of Anyone from the 2 songs I've heard. It s not bad, I think it's a few yrs too late, like you guys said.

Hey Scott, if you're serious about Blind Melon, the band put up 3 tracks with new lead singer Travis Warren today. The songs were up for a few hours and are currently not up but I think it's more of a technical glitch than a "we're only giving you a tease". Once the glitches have been worked out, you'll be able to hear the songs here: http://www.blindmelonmach2.com/mp3s/wimpy.php

New album is a surprise. For anyone that liked the 90's, this is a return to the old STP riffs minus SW. Patrick does the job better than anyone else could have.
Buy the record, half of it is really great.

What in the hell are you talking about? Comparing Richard to Scott? Two completely different people. Out of the 2 Richard has the better voice...so do tell why he would try to look or sound like that other guy. This band is ahead of it's time, by going back to the true rock bands we all have been yearning for. Of corse there is going to be influences by both Filter and STP, but this band has also been able to take advantage of that and add something new. They have alot to offer. And as far as the Brian comment when he was hired help for Filter, that was all he was. Had nothing to do with the sound of Filter. Richard Patrick is Filter, hopefully he will still release the 4th CD if we are so lucky.

A more informed, less ignorant writer would know that Richard Patrick already beat that "fancy drug habit" several years ago.

Its a great album anyway.

You guys may or may not like the album, but I saw them last night in Nashville and one things for sure. They kick ass live, but what else would you expect from STP and that guy singing.

And I have to give props to Luzier. I hate most things remotely related to Van Halen, but he is a phenominal drummer.

C'mon people this is good music,I'm sure after putting up with SW not being able to leave (Mr. Brownstone)alone by the way which is just sad..I think the brothers have put together some good tunes, it's an artform, expression, and by the way ..how many of you out there have a record deal????? Peace

_no one_ other than those who follow rock etc. and spend a lot of time on the web "NOT MSGing" or "MYSPACING" etc. (like 90% of braindead/everyone does) even follows you guys!
I go to school w/ 1000 others and we are _just now_ picking up on "Army of Anyone"!
I wish you didn't have to be experts and connoisseurs of everything!
AoA rules! You will see.

Wow, I can't belive what total shit this review is. You've heard one song off their album (which happens to kick ass) and your bitching and picking them apart?

10 years too late? What are they supposed to be playing, emo? That's the most retarded thing I've ever heard. Its good music today, tomorrow, 10 years ago, whatever.

Just saw these guys live in St. Louis, they're incredible. Luzier is one of the best drummers I've ever seen live.

Why don't you cheap bastards go spend $10 on the album, listen to it, and then STFU.

There are only 2 songs I like off Filter's first album, i'm glad Brian left, Richard Patrick did good with the next 2 albums and hope he comes out with a 4th (pretty please?)...you can't compare Scott and Richard , 2 different voices with 2 different takes on approaching a song...long live Richards' angst...
