Bad Plus Cover The Flaming Lips

The longtime jazz trio Bad Plus (no, not Bad Pus) are releasing a new album For All I Care in a couple months. It includes the trio's first recordings with a vocalist: Wendy Lewis adds her voice to the bass, drums, and piano. The band explains that the approach and the recording were inspired partly by the 1963 collaborative work of John Coltrane and vocalist Johnny Hartman.

Coltrane's quartet had already developed a group language, and then they enlisted this incredible singer without changing the language of the band," says King. "In that same sense, this is still very much a Bad Plus record. We just happen to have a great singer singing the songs with us.

Except Coltraine never got around to covering the Flaming Lips' " Feeling Yourself Disintegrate."

For All I Care also includes the band's take on Nirvana's "Lithium" (which is where they got the album title), Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb," Yes's "Long Distance Runaround," the Bee Gees' "How Deep is Your Love," and Heart's "Barracuda" along with works by Györgi Ligeti, Milton Babbitt and Igor Stravinsky.

For All I Care is out 2/3 via Heads Up International, who're also doing a double-LP version with a bonus cover of U2's "New Year's Day" and an original.

haha i really did not like this, i dont know if it just wasn't my jam or whether it just didnt even nearly replicate any of the feelings the original makes me feel and not that it should either... I just don't think it brought anything new to the table apart from a kind of embarrased feeling.

I kinda dig it. I was very, very hesitant to hear vocals but I think I dig it.

You misspelled Coltrane. There is no act more shameful to the music gods.
