Ben Gibbard Plays Bowery Ballroom 1/10/05

EJ and I, along with Jeff and Jen, killed a few hours with Tivo last night in order to arrive at Bowery just as Ben hit the stage. We came pretty close, but I didn't start to note the set list until he was a few songs in, so help me fill in the gaps. I did hear he opened with "Brand New Colony."

Ben Gibbard @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC 1/10/06
"Brand New Colony"
???
???
"You Remind Me Of Home"
"(This Is) The Dream Of Evan And Chan" (Dntel)
"Why You'd Want To Live Here"
"It'll Be A Breeze" (Long Winters)
"Recycled Air"
"Crooked Teeth"
"405"
"Title Track"
"I Hate To See You Cry" (Alan Hull)
"Farmer Chords"
"Look Out Here Comes Tomorrow" (Neil Diamond)
"The Sound Of Settling"
"Such Great Heights"
"I Will Follow You Into The Dark"
"A Lack Of Color"
??? (Spiritualized)
The performance was charmingly shoddy, which the packed house (packed with label execs, Jeff thinks) ate up. Gibb's false-start "Sound Of Settling" and fuck-ups during "Why'd You Want To Live Here" were met with big applause. ("I haven't quite practiced that one," he said of the latter.)

As expected, Ben performed cuts from his 2003 split EP with opener Andrew Kenny, and a bunch of covers. Not Cyndi Lauper nor Avril Lavigne (despite the requests of a persistent crowdgoer), but Long Winters, Alan Hull, Spiritualized, and a Monkees tune penned by Neil Diamond (who is "the man," according to Ben).

He also promised "I'm not fucking playing 'Thriller.'"

Here's a live cut from the Death Cabbie's Tsunami benefit show in Seattle last January.

Ben Gibbard - "(This Is) The Dream Of Evan And Chan (1/14/05)" (MP3 Link Expired)

Coming up ... our Stereogum concert winner's report (and photos) from Ben and Nick's Sunday night Q&A with Jon Pareles for NYTimes Arts & Leisure Weekend.

can't remember the name and can't really check since i'm at work, but the lyrics go "hold close the ones you love or hold dear" or something like that. it was a waltz.

and thanks to all the fuckers that talked through the entire show last night. no one gives a shit if you "LOVE THIS SONG!!" or about your horrible story relating to why you love the song. shut up and watch the fucking show.

I guess that would make it "Hold On" from Amazing Grace.

it's too bad that Death Cab totally rip off Grandaddy's sound...

As much as I dislike Deathcab, I do appreciate how schlubby Ben Gibbard is. I mean it's an exception to the rule, but it's refreshing nonetheless.

If anyone has a recording of Gibb covering the long winters, I'd be very interested to hear it. VERY INTERESTED.

ben gibbard isn't schlubby, though. he's a snappy dresser, and that happens to be a particulary unflattering photo. also, i love him.

I didn't mean schlubby in a bad way. I meant that he's not skinny and wan.

I wouldn't expect Gibbard to sound quite.. on.. covering The Long Winters. I'm just curious as to what it sounds like.

However, I am in possession of an mp3 of Sean Nelson/Harvey Danger covering New Girl.

Plus, Ben Gibbard and Colin Meloy have to be long lost twins. Have to. A friend of mine made the comment the other day that Ben looks like Peter Griffin from Family Guy. Take from that what you will.
