Bettye LaVette Covers Bruce Springsteen

Never got around to collectively scratching our skulls over Janet Reno's patriotic foray into album curation, but better late than never, so here's the windup: Our nation's former Attorney General has assembled a music comp, spanning three discs and 50 songs, telling the story of this great land through the collected works of folks like Devendra Banhart, Andrew Bird, Danielson, Freedy Johnston, Martha Wainwright, John Mellencamp, and Marah. Not quite "Janet Reno's Dance Party"; actually, even better. The tunes on Song Of America are Reno's picks of "songs focusing on key periods in American history," as a sort of pedagogical exercise in the country's past and an awesome bonding point for you and your Democrat dad. Since it came out this week, we figured we'd do our civic duty and provide some tracklist action, and even better, a standout cut from the comp: Bettye LaVette's cover of the Boss's "Streets Of Philadelphia."

Drive-By Truckers gave us an excuse to talk up the great lady of soul recently, and here she is again, with a powerful, piano bar take on Bruce's Philadelphia soundtrack standout, making it bleed with just a hint of double bass.

lavette rules. saw her play at a jazz bar once to 20 people in 2004, she played as if she was playing to a packed theatre. i had never seen her before and was floored. she also sang to me when she saw the grin on my face. she is the ultimate frontwoman and could teach a few of these up and coming bands a thing about to front a band. untouchable. song rules too. so awesome she had the savvy to let drive by truckers be her backing band. but then again, she is betty lavette.

I have never seen her live, but is an awesome singer - really beautiful. Her version of 'Just Say So' from 'I've Got My Own Hell To Raise' is astonishing, as is this Springsteen cover. Let alone her vintage material...

Thaks!

She's playing first class places and is headling at festivals and multi-act shows. Now it would be nice AND FITTING if our TV organizations would book this talented lady on their shows! Enough of this hip/hop, rap and half-dressed Britneys struting across the stage (not singing!)

Not only is Bettye LaVette the most dynamic female singer performing today, she is a very interesting person with a very dramatic story to tell. I've heard her say, "I've met practically everybody in this business over 50 year old."

If you think that "Philadelphia" is something, wait until you hear her take on Elton John's "Talking Old Soldiers."
