Bon Iver Covers Feist

thubmnail icon: Bon Iver Covers Feist

Both Justin Vernon and Leslie Feist have popped up in recent days as contributors to that heavily stacked Dark Was The Night compilation, and both will again for their collaborations with Aaron Dressner and Grizzly Bear, respectively. (If that double LP was pared down to one disc it would be an album of the year candidate, but that's a digression for another day.) Today we brandish the Bon Iver and Feist tags for Mr. Vernon's falsetto take on The Reminder lullaby "The Park," live on Australia's Triple J radio. During the session Justin tells the DJs about his love for Feist's breakthrough ("It hit me as the first record I heard when i came out of the woods, it was so good and so normal ... to hear some thing that was so well produced and professional and lasting and honest, and it's still on all the time at my house"). He also shares the Sesame Street character he'd like to see take on a Bon Iver tune (Mr. Snuffleupagus, but not on "Skinny Love" because "he's a fat bastard"). Let's start with the cover:

Bon Iver - The Park (Live On JJJ)" (MP3)

Thanks for the tip, Brett. More banter and a live "Creature Fear" over at JJJ. Fun fact: Justin Vernon's mom is named Justine. Cute.

decent take on it. He's a bit too "precious" to me

Bov Iver always looks like he's itchy. I guess it doesn't hurt that he's perhaps in mid-itch here.

I think your confusing precious with fragile, but each his own. Better than anything I've ever heard Fiest sing.

Nope, I meant precious. You can tell the way he sings sometimes is an affectation and other times it seems natural. This time seems like an affectation and it certainly tugs at the heart strings, just not sure if it does so effectively.

How many things have you ever heard Feist sing?

That would be a hot indie couple. Wisconsin is basically part of Canada anyway.

alas...i think feist is taken by fellow broken social scener kevin drew. i'm digging the cover though.

I've always thought he should sing this song.

Other songs Justin should cover:

Reckoner

That is all.

I don't know if this is a retarded question or not, but is there any way for Stereogum to splice the track so that it's just the Feist cover and none of the radio talk? I would love to have that to listen to all the time.

Isn't there a better quality version of this cover? It's pretty low.

i think this is a perfect song for him to cover, the melody screams justin vernon and he in turn belts it back. when i read that he would be covering a song by feist, there was no doubt in my mind that it would be this song. i would give my first born child, and a kidney to see justin and leslie perform a duet of this song in person. i don't care if it's in an abandoned cabin.
