CAKE Cover Barry White, Black Sabbath

Yeah, CAKE have passed their spotlight moment, but we've got a soft spot in our hearts for the California band's clever, pastiche funk (and especially "Short Skirt/Long Jacket"). The band's releasing B-Sides and Rarities, a collection featuring just what you'd think, plus some cover action. CAKE covering Barry White is a must:

CAKE - "Never, Never Gonna Give You Up" (MP3)

And here's their take on Black Sabbath, which isn't quite as strong as their Barry.

CAKE - "War Pigs" (MP3)

For "War Pigs" covers, Faith No More's is king. We'd like to hear CAKE cover Lionel Richie to settle this once and for all.

Spotlight moments are for trendy hipsters. Good fun music prevails timelessly.

I thought the Sabbath cover sucked ass. It just ENDS. The ending part, Luke's Wall is supposed to RESOLVE the back and forth of the chorus and verse that forms the first section. It's a coda, but an IMPORTANT CODA, and needs to be played with vigour and intensity. Instead, it sounds like some boring frat house garbage - like the RH Chili Peppers, only less vital. Feh.

Kevin Hearn and Thinbuckle do a bluegrass cover of War Pigs that is tremendous. Especially the final verse of the song, when they slap it down in 4 part harmony, with fiddle and mandolin.

Thanks for the mp3s of this -- i LOVE when cake covers songs like "I will survive" and "Guitar Man." They are not stale in my book. I'm sorry twingding didn't enjoy.

Anyone that doesn't enjoy or at least tap their toes to Cake has no place in the music scene. That is just a fact.

I love the War Pigs remake. It is perfect and I put it in my top 10 songs of all time. I loved the Black Sabbath version but this puts a more modern touch to it. The sirens and the brass solos make an impact that give me goose bumps. Awesome.
