Cat Power In Berlin
Was 11/9/06 past the moratorium on "Crazy" covers? We forget. Still, you should hit rbally for a soundboard-quality recording of Miss Indie Rock's show in Germany last year, where she worked through a weird version of Gnarls, along with plenty of The Greatest, some Moon Pix, and a killer, a cappella rendition of Smokey's "The Tracks Of My Tears" (mislabeled as "Tears Of A Clown"). Ausgezeichnet!

Oh me OH MY!! What a great show! And don't forget there's a Moby Grape cover nestled in there . . . I never, ever, thought that a Memphis soul recreation would be in Chan's future. I'm glad I was so wrong.

hey scott / amrit.
c'mon. linking to this stuff is not very cool.
we're always overly cool about mp3s on your blog and you guys are good about getting permissions, but this is in no way an official recording nor done with the permission of the artist.
do what you want...just sayin' this aint cool.
love,
adam

So, um, anyone want to post another link to the tracks? *awkward*

You want to discuss this in the comments? Really, Adam?

no - i don't like working this out in comments. just dropped you an email explaining.
the point for everyone is.... i can understand how live recordings are seemingly a different beast than an album recording when it comes to posting / sharing / etc. but sometimes we record shows to put on an album down the road or maybe offer as a value-add for people who pre-order albums, etc (like we did with Pavement recently, a show that had never been available anywhere). so stuff like this effectively kills those plans (i know, cry me a river mr. label guy).
whether or not this is the case with this particular recording, this doesn't change the fact that between someone sticking an XLR-out in a board with the artist and venue's permission and your post, someone posted these mp3s without any permission from the artist nor the label.
i realize stereogum didn't start this, but i also don't mind expressing the facts in a public way...posting these mp3s was done without any permission that we are aware of.
just doin' the lord's work...and for anyone who has downloaded it already, while i'm sure you will enjoy it, experiencing the show live is much, much better.
much love.

"stuff like this effectively kills those plans"
there were/are literally hundreds of Pavement bootlegs circulating before the Wow-Out thing
(http://db.etree.org/bs_d.php?artist_key=493)
while the Palace show is pretty great, for the casual fan, there's not a whole lot of difference between that any number of shows that were freely and pretty easily available before hand. and anyone who obsesses over a band enough to care about such intricacies is clearly buying the reissue anyhow.
if chan/matador/etc doesn't want this thing posted, that's completely fair. but just say that. unless this was the show that the label was set to release - and even if it was a raw SBD recording in a room that size often sounds dicey w/out some mixing from an aud source and mastering - to say that a bootleg is going to "kill" future plans for a value added program is a bit ridiculous.
"and for anyone who has downloaded it already, while i'm sure you will enjoy it, experiencing the show live is much, much better."
are you honestly suggesting that anyone who had bothered to d/l this would think otherwise?
Matador is a great label, but this (the dialogue, not the action) is the kind of condescending bs that i expect to hear from the Sonys and Universals.

alright adam, obviously to make such statements you must have some sort of statistical proof right?
show me.

For reference, NPR have a lowish quality MP3 of an entire Cat Power gig from the 9:30 Club, where she also performed her version of Crazy. It's right near the end - last 10 minutes or so.
