Cinnamon Girls By The Dozen

Sorry folks, if you're not Raphaela you didn't win Neil Young's CD catalog.

But as a consolation, we've got eleven (!) covers of "Cinnamon Girl" for ya, from slain (Type O) to Spain (Tarik), in addition to the original.

PLUS: another cool contest (very much the opposite of Neil Young) will be announced early this week.

  • Boyd Tinsley - "Cinnamon Girl" (MP3 Link Expired)
  • Dream Syndicate - "Cinnamon Girl" (MP3 Link Expired)
  • Hole - "Cinnamon Girl" (MP3 Link Expired)
  • Kashmir - "Cinnamon Girl" (MP3 Link Expired)
  • Radiohead - "Cinnamon Girl" (MP3 Link Expired)
  • Tarik Y La Fábrica De Colores - "Cinnamon Girl" (MP3 Link Expired)
  • The Constantines - "Cinnamon Girl" (MP3 Link Expired)
  • The Replicants - "Cinnamon Girl" (MP3 Link Expired)
  • The Smashing Pumpkins - "Cinnamon Girl" (MP3 Link Expired)
  • Type O Negative - "Cinnamon Girl" (MP3 Link Expired)
  • Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs - "Cinnamon Girl" (MP3 Link Expired)

But nothing compares to the original, does it?

  • Neil Young - "Cinnamon Girl" (MP3 Link Expired)

Thanks Eric for the Replicants. Sorry about the shitty sound on the Pumpkins. Got better? Send our way.

I you haven't checked out Sweet & Hoffs' shockingly superb Under The Covers, My Old Kentucky Blog has an additional preview: Sid & Susie take on the Zombies.

Meanwhile, according to neilyoung.com the songwriter is hard at work at a new album, Living With War, a "metal version of Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan." It's a combination he tentatively calls "metal folk protest."

UPDATE: Hey, I think we started a trend.

The Replicants (a sorta supergroup) did a fine cover. I don't know where you could find it; BUT it was in a skate video, 411 issue #20. world/blind/101/prime/plan b road trip section

Tarik y la Fábrica de Colores are not from Morocco, although their name points out the contrary. They are from Spain.

I'm pretty sure that's the best available quality for the Smashing Pumpkins cover. I think that's the only time they ever recorded that song in a studio. It's from the summer of 1989.

There's a pedestrian but pleasant "Cinnamon Girl" on the Clearlake EP "Wonder If the Snow Will Settle", which I can upload somewheres if you like.

I have a Radiohead bootleg from a concert at the Santa Barbara County Bowl, they played "Cinnamon Girl" and did a pretty nice job.

Speaking of Santa Barbara, Toad the Wet Sproket used to play it live quite a bit.

There's a good version by Loop on The Bridge: Tribute to Neil Young. A great comp from '89...before tribute albums were a dime a dozen. Pixies' "Winterlong" is on there. Flaming Lips' "After the Goldrush" is great.

Where's Prince's "Cinnamon Girl"? Sure, it's not a Neil Young cover, but the video features Keisha Castle-Hughes. And she's gonna be hot. (When she's 18+).

The best cover of Cinammon Girl is actually by The Long Winters who would do a good chunk of it in the middle of their own song Cinammon. It sounded incredible considering it was basically a 3 piece band with Sean from Harvey Danger doing the harmony.

Also worth a listen is San Diego lounge legend Rick Lyon's version at http://myspace.com/ricklyonmusic . Come see him if you're ever in town. He can do all the standards, a mean Neil D AND Jethro Tull! We love him so much, we made a myspace page for him (that's me doing a faint harmony on our official bootleg, couldn't help it!)

There's also an occaional Bay Area Neil Young coverband with members of Pansy Division and King Missile where they dress in drag and call it the Cinammon Girls. I know Jon Auer from the Posies did a show with them once too.

I never knew it was a Neil Young song. But i still think the Type O Negative version is the best. That is the only version i ever heard before.

I've listenned through them all now. God I hate Hole, she's such a looser biatch!

Respect to Neil Young tho' for another classic.

Thunder Fingers (Aka John Entwisle) does a top drawer cover of Cinnamon Girl from his 1971 solo debut called Smash Your Head Agianst the Wall. If interested will send you way.

Thanks for the covers! Esp. the Radiohead version. I sort of wish someone would do something REALLY different with it, tho, rather than these rather straight covers. The Type O version is the most nutty of the bunch. And, fair 'nuff to the poster who mentioned the Killdozer version. I used to play that on my radio show.

In other news, I received the following press release the other day for a charity record:
American Laundromat Records (ALR) is currently
seeking demo submissions by women artists and female-fronted bands for
a Neil Young tribute CD titled CINNAMON GIRL ~ WOMEN ARTISTS COVER
NEIL YOUNG. A Holiday 2006 release date is anticipated.
