Cold War Kids In Covers

Roll over, Johansson. Between Hollywood starlets and blog buzz bands, Tom Waits is getting serious cover love these days. This time, it's CWK paying respect, with a raw, guitar-voice-drums take on "I Don't Wanna Grow Up," as part of the free six-song web EP Benefit At The District. Here, Nathan avoids Waits's gravely affectation, but ends up sounding a little like Bobcat Goldthwait.

Cold War Kids - "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" (MP3)

But even if he doesn't know all of the changes, Nate's pipes shine on this Fiona Apple tune. The way he's working those vocal turns, it sounds like he's sung along to When The Pawn ... once or twice in his day.

Cold War Kids - "Fast As You Can" (MP3)

For similarly stripped takes on Elvis Costello, Dr. Dog, The Littlest Birds, and Lawrence Welk, hit the band's webste. And if you're in Europe, get ready, 'cause V2 is releasing the We Used To Vacation EP on 11/27, featuring the title track, "Expensive Tastes," "Harmony In Silver," and "Quiet Please." Guess it'll take more than an off-base review to keep the Kids down.

GOD DAMN that is one fucking horrible band. The pitch slogan should be "If you like TRAIN, you'll LOVE CWK!"

I'm ambivalent to this band, they're good, but not great!

I figured out how the Stereogum comment filter works! You simply make sure you put something in for "URL"!

I assume you are reffering to the rediculous review on PFork the CWK recieved. If u hate it that much why write a novel about it?

I'm glad someone else realized P4k's review was off-base. The rest of these commenters seem to just be throwing up the same bile. It's really lame. Live cuts usually suck, and this sucks too, but no worse than any Travis Morrison or Ben Gibbard live accoustic cut. The difference is this guy CAN occasionally wail, and Ben Gibbard can't.

I'm glad they're still plugging along after that blatantly bigotus review.

anyone remember the Ramones cover of "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" from their last album? That's how it's done.

why are these guys getting hyped again?

no, seriously. i am not being a jaded-blog-reading-fuck here. i genuinely don't get it. each time i hear them, they don't get better.

insert them into the bin where WaS, beirut, and CYHSY reside. i guess i am being a jaded fuck. oh well.

I saw them play the other night with Swearing with Motorists. S@M was great. I was not impressed by CWK. I thought they sounded a little like Urban Dance Squad.
