Conor Oberst Covers Paul Simon, Plays New Songs In Austin

thubmnail icon: Conor Oberst Covers Paul Simon, Plays New Songs In Austin

Eponymous solo artist Conor Oberst played Austin City Limits with his Mystic Valley Band this past Saturday. Those in attendance heard a couple new songs -- "10 Women" and the extended Rolling Stone-referencing "I Got A Reason #2" -- along with a cover of a Paul Simon's "Kodachrome," a song they "sing everyday on the bus." We weren't there, but because of a tip (thanks, gorillasareforeating), we have proof. One thing our tipster tells us, and which isn't captured, is that Oberst dedicated the countrified ballad "10 Women" to Britt Daniel. Hmm, why's that Britt? Listen:

The Oberst originals:

Conor Oberst - "10 Women" (Live) (MP3)
Conor Oberst - "I Got A Reason #2" (Live) (MP3)

Paul's "Kodachrome":

"I Got a Reason #2" is extremely Dylanesque, not that that's a bad thing, just saying. I think Conor's growing as an artist, but this may be just a transition album. He's always had his moments of brilliance as a lyricist. I'm glad he's singing with less affect, hiring good backing musicians, and enjoying the pleasures of Paul Simon songs.

Does anyone know what the Blues-y new song that Conor played was called and if a recording exists? This was the big highlight of the show.

Bluesy song...? They played a lot of bluesy songs. But you're probably thinking of "Corrina Corrina"

Britt Daniel was standing in the crowd about 15 feet away from me to the left, and I was pretty close to the stage. Conor gave a shout out to him as being his "hero" or something like that.

They only wrote that 10 Women song a week ago. Not bad when you take that into account.

I also really liked I Gotta Reason #1. Can't find a recording of that anywhere. Probably because Conor doesn't sing it.

This was one of my favorite performances at ACL this weekend. Conor and the band were phenomenal.

I too saw Britt Daniel. Not at the show, but he walked past me down 6th Street later on that night.

I think you forgot some dates. I know for sure they're playing with Jenny Lewis in Seattle at the Showbox (SoDo?) on October 26.

Kodachrome is NOT a whiney song...his voice doesn't do it justice.

I really enjoyed him when I saw him here in Tennessee.
He played with Jenny Lewis (who was amazing, conor kept praising her until they finally brought her back on stage)
He also played the Kodachrome song, which was better here, Im not going to lie. I think it had something to do with the fact that he didnt have that awkward backup singer.
I recomend to anyone who thinks they might like conor to see him live, he is so much better live because you get the whole package, the random ramblings and his drunken flinging of objects. definately check him out if at all possible.

That was at the ryman right? I was there, and it was really good. Especially the ramblings.

I also saw him at mercy lounge a few weeks ago, but he wasn't as drunk, and therefore not as verbal.

AustinBloggyLimits.com was there too. What a great show. Kodachrome was a highlight. Is this mp3 from the La Zone Rosa performance?

I just saw him yesterday in Hilton Head. It was AMAZING. He played this song, and I have no idea what it is and I can't seem to find it. He says "anything you wanna do" a whole bunch of times in it though. It's really mellow and sadish. If anyone knows what it is or where I could find it, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!
