Cricket, Blood Pudding, Paul Weller
Anyone catch Tabloid Wars last night? Who knew working at NY Daily News was so boring?
The paper's pop critic Jim Farber is probably better off hiding in his cubicle and listen to the Jam. Today he maligns America's indifference to Paul Weller: "Pick up this album, and you'll find yourself racing back through Weller's deep catalogue, wondering where he has been all your life."
The album he's referring to is a the new double-live LP Catch-Flame! and it's a fine Paul primer indeed.

Paul Weller - "That's Entertainment" (Live) (MP3)

"...wondering where he has been all your life."
I know where Paul Weller was for most of my life -- in the Style Council...who sucked. A LOT.

Jim Farber is a pretty good critic...he always has something interesting to say and he answers emails. I must have emailed Farber 100 times, most of my emails taunting him for a review he wrote. He always emailed me back and took the taunts like a man, which is the mark of a great critic.

The Jam rules!
Score = 0
I love Paul Weller, but everything I have of his is on vinyl (read: in the basement for the time being).
Saw the Jam in the early 80s, one of my favorite shows ever. (Now I am expecting to be banished from Stereogum as a fossil...)
Score = 0
The Style Council's only problem was being book-ended by The Jam and Weller's solo career (and, well, the occasional over-reach). Otherwise, Weller wrote some of his finest songs with that band.
Score = 0
I'm an old Jam fan too (saw them twice -ha!) but if Farber reckons their first two albums are their best he must be deaf. Decent albums but nowhere near as good as everything they did from 'All Mod Con' onwards.
Also, the Style Council's second album is 'My Favourite Shop' not 'Cafe Bleu'
This guy gets paid to make mistakes like that?
Score = 0
Reluctant to jump to Farber's defense here but... he actually called "Cafe Bleu" their second *release*, which would be correct, following as it did the Money-Go-Round/Long Hot Summer EP. That one tripped me up, too.

Check out the saturn project. Chicago's up and coming hidden secret!
Give us time and So alive Songs and anthems for a hungry generation. VIbrant electric sounds reminiscent to U2, Drum patterns and syncopation mirrored to the fusion of the police, vocals and harmonies colliding Coldplay and radiohead. the Saturn Project is a whole new musical experience in itlself. unconfined energy and abstract sounds. You can't help but notice the richness of culture and ancient blood, subliminaly shown, a portrait is painted night after night on stage with lyrics and sounds striking the soul. Where the "U Turn" leads, only "time" will know, the thought of losing life makes it feel "SO ALive".
Hypnosis: a state like sleep in which the subject acts only on external suggestions. As you listen to the songs performed live by the Saturn Project, this is the feeling that overcomes you despite all of your efforts to hold back. They make you feel So Alive with their electric and engaging on-stage presence. You will be so dazed after their set, that they will have you Counting Stars. There is nothing dull about this band, and I can GUARANTEE that you will not be Waiting for that one good song. With their unwavering determination to create music that will change the world, Better Days are yet to come for this group of young musical geniuses. Now you can listen to their CDs or hear how good the Saturn Project is, but Only You can witness for you, the start of new era in what we today call amazing music!

It is truly a shame America has little appreciation for Paul Weller- truly one of the most emotive, poetic, and melodic singer/player/songwriters. He doesn't promote himself in the good ole' USA because noone knows him and vice versa -its a catch 22 really.
But all his stuff is excellent (especially the live stuff-Days of Speed is my fave-mostly acoustic and very well done) Grew up w/ the angry Jam stuff couldntve lived w/o it- even angrier and more cutting than Clash,Wire,& Pistols (other teen year faves). Weller is very much one of my favorite songwriters of all times. It is dissapointing that one must travel to Europe or Japan( he's huge there I understand) to see him.
LONG LIVE THE JAM Style Council's alright with me too- like the name says he tried something beautiful and stylish and for awhile - it worked
