Denis Leary Loves Twilight Singers

Fiery FX drama Rescue Me premieres tonight, and its star/executive producer is taking some interview opportunities to give free publicity to the new Twilight Singers album.

Denis hit The Daily Show earlier this month and brought the CD with him:

"This is an album I had nothing to do with. It's the best album I heard in ten years. It's called Powder Burns by the Twilight Singers."
He also says in the new Entertainment Weekly.
"[Powder Burns] is one of the best rock albums I've heard in 10 years. Thematically, it seems like it's all connected to a dark story of addiction. It's really powerful."
Greg Dulli's autobiographical tales of drug dependency do make for a great record. Especially if you like dense, guitar rock with a shot of depressing. Turns out, the song I picked to share with you is on the excellent Rescue Me soundtrack.

The Twilight Singers - "Bonnie Brae" (MP3 Link Expired)

Don't tell Denis the show's website never heard of them:

At last night's Boston gig, Twilight Scissors Singers did Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy." (They're a great cover band too.) I'll keep an ear out for MP3.

I should mention that "Bonnie Brae" song features Ani Difranco. Dulli told Billboard:

"I'll tell you, I love the wall-of-sound. I really do. I love layering and I love the discovery of new parts to go with other parts. That song in particular sonically came alive when I added the mellotron to it. And then when Ani did her harmony vocals at the end, it sonically blows my mind. So, that song in particular, it's one of my favorites I've done in the last couple of years."

I hate Ani DiFranco, so maybe this is just wishful listening, but Bonnie Brae sounds like a Dulli original. My guess is she just sings back-up, no writing involved.

Ani DiFranco neither wrote nor co-worte "Bonnie Brae." It's all Dulli.

Ani does not, nor ever will, rock as hard as Dulli.

I'm not hating on Ani, but I seriously doubt she wrote any of Bonnie Brae.

Denis Leary has some of the most ignorant, ill-informed taste and opinions in Hollywood. But I like Dulli.

So I'm torn.

Oh, except for ripping off half his schtick (and many individual jokes) from Bill Hicks. I'll admit he had a good idea when he came up with a plan to rob the dead.

What's with him & always promoting other stuff on talk shows? I mean it's nice giving publicity to good music but eh, seems like he's trying to shove it down our throats.

though I love the twilight singers and everything else Dulli does, he said the same things about Ryan Adams- Cold Roses a year ago which I love too. Great taste in music but he seems to pimp the underdog of the moment......keep doing it Leary, great f-ing show

i love dulli, the whigs and the twilight singers more than any man should. he's the king of great covers - the whig's cover of "band of gold" might be the best cover ever by any band. and he puts on a hell of a show, so few singers have the charisma on stage he has...

A buddy of mine recorded the Toronto show. He's working on cleaning it up and splitting the tracks now, so I'll try and get "Crazy" out soon.

Bitches cannot TOUCH Greg Dulli. He is a musical genius!

Seriously, the new TS is great. So cool to be seeing them in SF next month. And yes, Dulli is the King of Covers - even if it's a cover of a Whigs track. Would be nice to hear "Uptown Again" live once before I die.

mods vs. rockers -- you shoulda been in cincinnati -- didn't play uptown again (which is sooo much better live) but john curley joined greg for the second encoure, did fountain and fairfax, 66 and faded. we went to the soundcheck -- never heard better bass playing. curley just rocked it. they played f&f the next night in indy, too.

The Dulli/Leary connection goes way back. I think they're in a movie called Monument Ave. together that was done in '96 or so. So the endorsement isn't surprising, really.

Dulli also appears on Denis Leary's Lock and Load album. And it's fucking hot.

What season of Rescue Me is that? Is it three? We just finished season 2 in the UK and I find it hard to believe we got that shit before the US.

If anyone has audio/video/photos from the Toronto show, please hook a sister up -- Dulli pulled me up onstage for a dance/serenade and I'd love to see what an idiot I made of myself from the audience perspective. :)
