SXSW 2009: Dirty Projectors' "Stillness Is The Move" FTW

Dirty Projectors have been playing only Bitte Orca tunes in their SXSW sets, and Amrit tells me yesterday's performance at Emo's Jr. was unreal (his pics adorn this post). The crowd apparently cheered so loudly, Dave Longstreth had to plug his ears. NPR's recording of the indie sextet's earlier gig at The Parish (3/19) suggests that if you're in Austin today, you should be at the Press Here Garden Party at 7 PM tonight. Set closer "Stillness Is The Move" is a show-stopping R&B jam that finds Amber Coffman getting her Mariah on over Dave's repetitive, spangly riff and Angel Deradoorian's throbbing synth. It's a wild twist on their arty sound and will be Orca's forthcoming first single, so get acquainted now.

Dirty Projectors - "Stillness Is The Move" (SXSW 3/19/09) (MP3)
Dirty Projectors - "Remade Horizon" (SXSW 3/19/09) (MP3)

You can stream the entire Thursday set, which kicks off with "Cannibal Resource," at NPR or below.

"Stillness Is The Move" is out 4/21 -- 12" and digital -- and includes these tracks:
A1 "Stillness Is The Move (Album Version)"
A2 "Stillness Is The Move (A Cappella Mix)"
B1 "Stillness Is The Move (Lucky Dragons Remix)"
B2 "Wave The Bloody Shirt"
B3 "Bitte Bitte Orca"

I saw these guys at The Grind at Clark U in Worcester last year - it was a free show bc they were working out lots of new material. Totally a different experience to see them live than to just listen - they are very tight with intense interaction. They should jam with Ponytail...

Anyway, your tour dates list will be out of date in a few days... you should just use a feed or widget so the post always has fresh info.. (feed at bottom)

You should consider making your widget just list the shows instead of being a map.

I thought the beginning of "Remade Horizon" was a synth until I heard the end. Amber and Angel sound like they owned this performance.

Another candidate for AOTY? Anyone? Can we start comparing it to MPP and Veckatimest now?

I think the real FTW here is us. 2009 is shaping up to be one of the best year's for new music and it sounds like Dirty Projectors are only going to punctuate that statement. We've really been spoiled already.

2009 will be the best year for music ever. Heres to hoping we'll have another panda bear release by the end of the year.

so far we have at least 2 albums that are better than Panda (Grizzly and AC) and this Dirty Projectors album just could be a third, not to mention phoenix!!!

2009 already is >>>>>>2008

1966 gets my vote. Three of the best (most memorable, influential, whatever) albums ever made were released within four months of each other. A lot of us still listen to these albums a few times a year. There's no way our kids will give a shit about anything that's being made today. Still should be a good year though. I loved Rise Above and I'm excited for more.

Dave Longstreth, the smartest man in music today? Good to see Nat Baldwin back in the fold!

I think on basis on the SXSW songs, the new Dirty Projectors album will knock the shit out of both GB and AC

WTF is wrong with you people????

It's not a competition about which record is better or best. Chill out. Stop talking about music like it's the fucking NCAA tournament. Art doesn't have winners and losers.

Hey, I just found a competition in art: http://employees.oneonta.edu/farberas/arth/Arth213/baptistry_competition.html

And don't act like Michael Bolton is winning at something

I don't get it, this band is awful, no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Not everybody's going to like them for sure, but they're trying something unusual, they have plenty of musical chops and a lot of intensity - I think those are 'redeeming qualities' enough.

Peter Gabriel in "chrono-synclastic infundibula"...like say "Wardrobe" and "Sledgehammer"...serious joy...(now I'm trying too hard)
