Fuck Buttons Remix Manic Street Preachers (Stereogum Premiere)

thubmnail icon: Fuck Buttons Remix Manic Street Preachers (Stereogum Premiere)

Taking a break from their Tarot Sport(s), Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power offer their distinctively kaleidoscopic crunch to an imploded twisting of Manic Street Preachers' "Virginia State Epileptic Society," a song from the seminal Welsh band's Steve Albini and Dave Eringa produced ninth studio album, Journal For Plague Lovers. Interestingly (and sort of chillingly), all of the new Preachers' songs include lyrics written by original (and way charismatic, complicated, troubled, literary) rhythm guitarist/lyricist Richey Edwards, who disappeared on February 1, 1995 and was presumed dead a few years later. Jenny Saville's battered cover art adds to the eeriness. And, yes, considering their thing for flashing pulsations, it's fitting Fuck Buttons are tackling the track with epilepsy in the title.

Manic Street Preachers - "Virginia State Epileptic Colony (Fuck Buttons Remix)" (MP3)

Fuck Buttons' tweakis part of a bonus remix album you'll get if you pre-oder Journal from the band's website. The tracklist:

01 "Peeled Apples (Andy Weatherall Remix)"
02 "Me & Stephen Hawking (British Sea Power Remix)"
03 "Pretension/Repulsion (Four Tet Remix)"
04 "This Joke Sport Severed (Patrick Wolf's Love Letter to Richey Remix)"
05 "Journal for Plague Lovers (Optimo [Espacio] Remix)"
06 "Jackie Collins Existential Question Time (Saint Etienne Remix)"
07 "Marlon JD (NYPC's Wire Up Mix)"
08 "Virginia State Epileptic Society (Fuck Buttons Remix)"
09 "Door Closing Slowly (The Horrors Remix)"
10 "William's Last Words (Underworld Remix)"

Journal for Plague Lovers is out in the US 9/15 via Columbia. The label has a Journal For Plague Lovers page where you can look at a flip book of Edwards' journal. At the end of the month, the MSP's heading out on their first U.S. tour in a decade:

This is an absolutely amazing album - one of the best this year. And their first tour in the States in a decade. Defintiely check this group out.

Get this album, watch this band. They're great. Saw them last November and my voice was shot within five songs, so many classic tunes.

A little background: Richey co-wrote the lyrics with Nicky Wire (the bassist) more or less evenly until The Holy Bible, where he took a more dominant role and then disappeared. Since then Nicky's written all of the Manics' lyrics, with the exception of a few songs on Everything Must Go, their first post-Richey album which still had some of his lyrics on it, and "Ocean Spray" from Know Your Enemy, which was written by James Dean Bradfield (vocals, lead guitar) in tribute to his late mother.

The Journal for Plague Lovers lyrics were taken from a notebook Richey gave to the others a few weeks before he disappeared in February '95. So they've had the lyrics for over a decade, but only got around to using them now.

Are you serious with that Fuck Buttons "remix" thing? Honestly...that was the worst sounding crap ever. So they threw everything through a vocoder then added a beat to it? Wow. That was awful.
