Gossip Girl Brings Virgins, Guitar Hero To UES

Spotted: C in the back of his limo driving up and down Park Ave. Heard: "One Week Of Danger," one of five songs by the Virgins featured in last night's episode of Josh Schwartz's CW soap Gossip Girl. Yes, star-making music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas has come through in a big way on her promise to feature some up-and-coming NYC rockers. We'll spare you the plot summary, but know that Blair Waldorf's 17th birthday featured sushi, plastic guitars, and drama. Here's the opening scene with the aforementioned Virgins tune:

The band's other songs in episode 8 ("Seventeen Candles") -- "Fernando Pando," "Radio Christiane," "Rich Girls" and "Love Is Colder Than Death" -- make up the rest of their 07 EP. You can stream three of 'em at MySpace and purchase at iTunes.

But wait -- here's the best part: Stereogum totally willed it to happen! From our 8/27 post Gossip Girl Is The New Grey's Anatomy:

This is a New York based show (exploring the lives of rich Upper East Side kids), so Patsavas says "we'll definitely be using some New York-based bands." Betcha this page gets 1,000 friend requests overnight. Predictions for bands that'll appear on the show? Here's ours.
You owe us, Virgins!

The Virgins - "Rich Girls" (MP3)

Meanwhile, a friend tells us that the Gossip Girl book series eventually had Chuck coming out of the closet and getting a pet monkey (really). So things are about to get interesting for Miss Waldorf.

Alexandra Patsavas is the best out there. Not surprised to see her working with bands like The Virgins. Initally, The OC continually had great bands that didn't seem forced.

Entourage used "One Week Of Danger" like 2 seasons ago. Just sayin...

while a lot of bands would kill for the exposure alexandra patsavas is simply gutting the indie/hipster/whatever-you-want-to-call-it culture and dumping it into the mainstream making a buck off it in the process. any dj or music nerd could do her job.

very true. but, she could be pumping nickleback and 50 cent too. at least they're decent bands getting some attention from places other than apple and wal-mart. just sayin.

I'd say fuck the Virgins, but that might encourage someone to actually do it. I don't know if I can name ten live bands I've seen that are worse than them. Passionless, untalented, derivative songs that all feel like permutations of each other; differentiated only by which better band they're failing to rip off. Top it all off with fake "rock moves" executed with neither the energy or accuracy to get over. Yeah fucko, the mini-windmill really is meant to be pulled out of like a playful punch at the end. You may be wearing a guitar, but spiritually you're flicking lint off your designer jeans. Please quit pushing crap like this.

i think that everyone needs to get over the fact that obscure music is played on mainstream shows.

you cant fucking do anything about it.

anyone who is saying that "any dj or music nerd" could do her job obviously doesn't really understand the role of a music supervisor. its much more than just picking out good songs.

that being said, every music super i've ever met happen to be music nerds.

i have to say, the show's barely stuck to the books at all, so i don't think we have to worry about that whole monkey thing...

the show hardly keeps to the books. and from what i heard it was dan who comes out eventually... but that's just what my friend told me. who knows.

as for Patsavas and her choice of music... well to say the least it has mostly been atrocious, except the most recent two episodes on Gossip Girl. most of the soundtracks are filled with barely tolerable dance pop and whatever passes for the new style of hip hop kids are supposed to like these days. it's great to finally see her using credible and talented musicians on the show.

To add to what Kier said, Entourage also used "Rich Girls" this season.

I saw the virgins live and they were fucking awesome. Their music is catchy, no-frills and they were tight as shit. If they're at all derivitive it's in all the ways that simply make good music good music. They didn't seem "too cool" at all: they seemed like they were having a great time. Oh yeah, and one of them smoked on stage; that fucking bastard!!!
