Holidays Are Times Of Magic, Free MP3s

Thank you, Jim Noir. Over the past few weeks, more and more bands have come to the holiday table with new, seasonally appropriate songs to help get festive. As would be expected, it's definitely a mixed bag (stocking?), but there are a surprising amount of goodies as opposed to lumps of coal. We decided to gather some of these in one place so you could have a one-stop soundtrack for Holidays '07, for your tree trimming and eggnog slurping. We'll start off with our favorite of the bunch, Stereofave Evangelicals' "The Last Christmas On Earth." Actually, it could be our favorite song we've heard from these guys, bar none.

Evangelicals - "The Last Christmas On Earth" (MP3)

Spending the apocalypse beneath the mistletoe is beautiful. (Note the creepy ID3 tags -- theirs, not ours.) A whole sack of joy after the jump. But it's not as dirty as that sounded.

Danielson - "Christmas Eve Nite" (MP3)
Robbers On High Street - "Seasons Greetings" (MP3)
Frightened Rabbit - "It's Christmas So We'll Stop" (MP3)

Holiday songs always go well with Scotch. "It's Christmas So We'll Stop" is being released as a digital single in the US and a 7" in Europe, via FatCat UK. The B-side is a choral take on the above. Don't play this song when you take the kids to pick out a tree:

Nellie McKay - "A Christmas Dirge" (MP3)

A cappella ... Play this for your therapist:

The Polyphonic Spree - "Carol Of The Bells" (MP3)

With a name like Snowden you're going to sing about a "White Christmas"; Jordan should've cut to the chase and gone for "Let It Snowden."

Snowden - "White Christmas" (MP3)

You can hear the rest of their Xmas-y 2005 The Licorice EP at Kiss Atlanta. And it always sounds like it's snowing in Sally Shapiro songs, so makes sense she's reprised "Anorak Christmas" in time for the holidays.

Sally Shapiro - "Anorak Christmas (Piano Mix)" (MP3)

You can download J. Gale Kilgore's five-song country Christmas EP complete with artwork at Dovecote Records. It goes without saying (or reposting) that "Christmas In Fallujah" will always be in bloom. You can find plenty of Christmas non-cheer on the Magnetic Fields' supreme baby Jesus & Mary Chain turn Distortion Where does one rank the Killers' Don't Shoot Me Santa" against "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer"? Will any of these tracks beat "Christmas Number One"? So, yeah, basically we're focusing on new additions to the free indie Xmas canon -- it's not intended to be comprehensive of every indie song in history. That said, we'll happily check out any links to Xmas mixes in the comments. Post 'em if you got 'em.

Quit Your Day Job: Ungdomskulen

The Bergen trio Ungdomskulen play proggy post punk, mixing chops and hooks with a sense of humor. But they don't sound like Primus. When I was in Norway a couple years ago, "Ungdomskulen" seemed to be on everybody's lips (or...

Premature Evaluation: Beck - Modern Guilt

It's been some time since we learned Modern Guilt, Beck Hansen's eighth album, would be some sort of psych rock minimalist '60s trip with Danger Mouse. Since then, we've gotten a look at the old-school jazz/Blue Note-style cover art and...
