Lollapalooza 2008: Wilco Bring New Tune, Not Obama

By Scott Lapatine & Amrit Singh
Wilco and Rage Against The Machine went head to head on last night's schedule, and fans of both bands began the trek to opposite sides of Grant Park well before the 8:30 kickoff. We chose Wilco, and not because of the rumors from People Who Would Know that Barack Obama would be introducing. He didn't, of course, though some say it will happen for Kanye tonight. The hometown rockers donned colorful Nudie suits, which Tweedy claimed they had been busy sewing, and kicked things off with "Misunderstood." Total Pros joined on horns for the last five songs. Halfway through the set, a reward for those who hadn't headed to the other headliner: WIP (i.e., "work in progress") "One Wing," a meandering rocker with a built-up triple axe explosion in the vein of Sky Blue Sky. We've got the song, along with setlist and photos of the rhinestone alt-cowboys. (RATM review coming up after we attend to our bruises.)

Obama is an empty suit. It's telling that people are so taken with this man when all he does is shine like a new penny. His rhetoric is always vague, esoteric and "inspirational". He has absolutely no business running the most powerful nation on Earth. Pray that McCain crushes him in the general election. Oh, and Obama looks like Alfred E. Neuman. What, me worry? Yes. I'll worry a lot if that socialist nut bag gets into office.
Score = -54
I came here to read about Wilco and saw the very 1980's comment on Obama and McCain. I have a very strong hunch that there are enough voters out there who are highly educated and travelled enough to elect Obama in November. An empty-suit he is certainly not. And if you compare his resume and experience to McCain's you'll find that throughout his life he has had nothing but success and an uncanny ability to have foresight that actually means something. And after 8 years of a president that has taken a pass on all accountability, I 'm confident that we'll go for Obama over Grampa Munster.

Since when do Bill Kristol and Keith Olbermann frequent Stereogum? Let's talk meandering jams and rhinestone suits. Sky Blue Sky was the best album of 2007. Discuss.
Score = 8
I can't give it the top slot (that goes to Field Music's Tones of Town), but it's easily top 5 in what was a great year for albums.
Score = 1
Field Music and Wilco made the best albums of 07?! The year that gave us Strawberry Jam, Random Spirit Lover, Boxer, In Rainbows, Sound of Silver, Mirrored, Person Pitch, Hissing Fauna, and so many more? Surely you jest, good sirs.
Score = 2
Yea!! Tones of Town was in my top 5 too-- always wondered why it didn't catch on.

wrong site "Barry". take yr hillarious frustrations elsewhere with all the other 52 year old out of touch grumps. McCain wont even be alive in November so you're point is deemed moot anyway :-)

That sounds ominous, buns. Or should I call you Sirhan Sirhan Jr.?
And even though Wilco aren't that great anymore (who knew a white guy with dreads would be so integral to a band's success?), if I had to choose between seeing them and seeing those wannabe rabble rousers in RATM (Morello is the most overrated guitarist in decades--seriously, strip away his multitude of effects pedals and the guy can't play for shit--see: his "stripped-down" playing in Audioslave and his solo project), well, that ain't no choice at all.

FYI, those are not Nudie Suits. Nudie Cohn died in 1984. They look nice though!

These comments are making my brain hurt.

I post on here every now and then (not a ton), but this is just a disclaimer for any future posts of mine I'm not that Barry (with a capital B) that started all this stuff about Obama.
Don't yell at me later
Thanks

Just saw them in Indy and Mr. Tweedy said all of those Chicagoans couldnt clap to save their lives. I sure am jealous of those Nuevo Nudie suits though... I mean, how can Nash's pot leaves shine a candle to that star kitty? Good call good sirs...
Score = 0
I think you mean Graham Parson's pot leaves, not Graham Nash. No biggie. Just settin' the record straight. And the kitties are great, but I would go with Graham's leaves, pills and the shining cross on the back!

who is Bill Kristol and Keith Olbermann anyway, I'm not american...
But those names made me laugh :-)

i said fuck both of these bands and went home to get ready for moby. that was my headliner on saturday, though I would've liked to have been there when they played this new song.

The new Wilco song is promising.
Score = 0
The first song is a bit dull. It reminds me of the adult contemporary mid-tempo blah of sky-blue-sky.
Sunshine held a bit more promise.
Wilco if nothing else consistently surprise. If they could consistently surprise and delight that would be great. Maybe Tweedy and Stirrat need to fire everybody again to get things stirred up. Too many virtuosos who want to play earbleeding guitar solos.
