Marissa Nadler Covers The Band

Psych-folk siren Marissa Nadler has recorded a take on "Lonesome Suzie," dressing The Band's tune in her finger-picking and ever-calming vocals. Richard Manuel would be proud. (via GvsB)

That's not fair.. when she's good she's spellbinding but I think the problem with her stuff so far is the sameiness of the melodies and arrangements which starts to become noticeable across the course of a whole album.

hahahahah!!! i couldn't agree more, annie onymous. i saw her last week opening for el perro del mar, and all i could think about was going downstairs to get a drink. glad i'm not alone there :)

nothing like undermining a person's work, which is pretty complex, because she's beautiful. i didn't even know what she looked like before i saw her perform live and it was still a great - if not dark as shit - evening.

I think Marissa's music (her own compositions and her interpretations of others works), voice and musical arrangements are simply INCREDIBLE. If dogs howl at the moon, the moon does not stop shining. And Marissa's work shines with an unmistakably dark and beautiful luminosity, and no amount of venom spouted at it can sully her work. I wish her every success and hope she travels north of the border to perform live.

There is nothing wrong in disliking an artiste's work. But how that dislike is articulated tells more about that person than the work of the artiste. And in the condemnation expressed here for Marissa's work by Annie Onymous and JP - to me it reflects a superficial, petty or even immature attitude towards the work of an artiste.

And Richie what you refer to as the "sameiness of the melodies and arrangements" in Marissa's work, it in fact reflects her individual style as well as the genre of her music which has been frequently described as "Dream pop", but which I prefer to describe as Gothic folk music or even Noir folk music. Labelling all her work as having "sameiness" is sort of like saying that all of Van Gogh's art looks the same. In any event I think there are others out there who may share your view. The important thing is that your criticism has content whereas the condemnation of Marissa's work by Annie Onymous and JP has no content excepting they find it boring. But then a dog will find a book boring too :-)...oops sorry about that last remark....it was too much like Annie Onymous's and JP's rundown of Marissa's work.
